( 1840-1902). in hi s mammoth work. the
renowned P.ryclwpathia Sexualis. Publi shed in
Stuttgan in 1886 and expanded several times
( I). the important medico-legal essay for the
benefi t of doctors and jurists lists. for tbe first
time, a long series of manias. aberrations.
bizarre. extravagant or crimjnal manifestations
closely linked together with sexuality. which
were. up until then. wboo. Among other things.
the well-known authoritative professor of the
Unjversi ti es of Strasbourg. Graz and Vienna.
coined for the occasion two neologi sms which
have been frequently used in our spoken lan-
guage for more than a cenrury. SADISM and
MASOCHISM. drawing hi s inpiration from the
surnames of two (in)famous wri ters. the Di vi ne
Marqui s and the Happy Slave, aka D.A. F. de

tilm-.. Italian horrors and interpreted
by Edwige Fenech. Rita Calderoni or Rosalba

nudity. ex and healthy never seen
in movie-halls (or in the more modem home
video systems). courtesy of the inevitable cuts
by censorship or deleted in advance
by the producers of aid films. Many of Lhelle

they'd finally end up by being released as in the
case of L'Assoluto Naturale, Femina Ride/IS

erotic movies under the guise of ''cineroman-
zo", where sex. in all its various fantasies,
couldn't help but bei ng represented. All in all.
a small visual encyclopaedia. a veritable cata-
logue of scenes of orgiastic. Lesbian. sado-
masochistic. fetishistic (and whatever you have
it .. ) love ( 14 ).
From this fabulous jewel-case. we have drawn
out ten gems produced and directed in Italy,

use of colors, sporting a decidedly aestheticsm-inspired taste
(emphasized by Enni o Morricone's oft music score). the movie is
a compelling mi xture of cerebral eroticism. sex. love. death. in a
story of literary drawing-room-styled alienati on. Goffredo Pari se,
the author of the script of L'Ape Regina (directed by Marco Ferreri
in 1963), brings us another story of mi soginy and triumphant
matri archy. with nymphomani a replacing procreative sex. The

asylum for the crimjnall y insane, where the director shows them a
few cases or criminal pathology. One of these concerns the cruel
Gilberto who. owing to a childhood trauma. hated the opposite sex,
even though he felt morbidl y drawn 10 it. ln hi s isolated cottage-
turned-torture chamber he would give vent to his insane fa ntasies by
luring and tom1enting several unaware prostitutes (the latter of

by si mulating the murder or young pro titutes he lures to an apart -
ment he has equipped with assorted instruments of torture. He also
involves Mury. his press-agent. in his perverted game: he humiliates
and torments her. he even goes as far as threatening to kill her. until
she almost takes her own life. However. at this point. Sayer
reali zing he has fallen in love with her and the woman seems to rec-
iprocate. In reality. while Sayer uses hi s "victims" in order to fulfi l
harmless sadisti c fantasies, Mary turns out to be a veritable homi ci-
dal mantis who has ensnared the proverbial male to. then. kill hi m.
She has perfectl y played her role as the sacrifi cial victim. willingly
replacing the usual week-end prostitute and, in the end. he can add
Saycr"s photo to the albUf!1 of her preys.

with an unreal , sad and gloomy atmosphere. The producer imposed
the title Venus in Furs. in the wake of the homonymous lilm by
Mass imo Dallamano, starring Laura Antonelli. even though
Franco' s movi e has nothing to do whatsoever with Sacher-
Masoch's novel. In the German and Itali an versions the direction

Broadcasted in the '70s and the '80s by Itali an local TV stations,
the movie is nowadays practically non-existent. A.A.A. Massag-
giatrice Bel/a Presen:.a 0./fresi ... is one of the most underestimated
and obscure movies of direc10r Demofilo Fidani ( 19 14-1994),
active mainly in the field of Itali an westerns (with several Anglo-
American aliases), also l\nown as a scenographer and a painter.
Extremely revered in the field of parapsychology and spiritualism.
Fidani was a famous sensiti ve as well as the author of several books
on the subject (!/ Medium see dal Mistero. 1986). The leading
actress is the beautiful and curvaceous Paola Senatore, after a career
in softcore ci nema (// Ginecologo del/a Mwua, Dove Vai Se il
Vi:iello Non Ce /'Hai ?. l mmagini di 1111 Convent a. Malombra.
Maladonna. Penombra). she finall y joined the ranks of the "porn-
movemem" during the sos, starring in such movies a Non Stop.

I
I donor Herbert Lyutak, uno scienziato impotente sposato con
Marcia, prova piacere solo seviziando e uccidendo donne gio-
vani e belle. Per soddisfare il folie marito, la moglie vergine si
souopone masochi sticamente alle sue suavaganti torture. La polizia
accusa Lyutak delle morti misteriose perche e !'ultima persona vista
in compagni a di una delle vi uime, ma due delini successivi lo sca-
gionano poiche dimostra di avere al ibi inoppugnabili. E' stata infat-
ti la moglie a commetlere i due ultimi omicidi per sviare le indagi-
ni e salvare l'amaLO. Quando Marcia confessa a Herbert di essere
anche lei un' assassina, la nipote Joaquine, innamorata dell a zia con
cui ha una relazione lesbica. perde il controll o e la uccide nel tragi-
eo finale, prima di perdere anche lei la vita. colpita dal moribondo
Lyutak.

turato la moglie, grida davanti allo specchi o lena!. .. Sei una
iena!), Hargitay sarebbe stato diretto ancora da Polselli nell'horror
Riti, magie ne re e segrete orge ne! Trecento ( 1973 ), tornando sui set
reale del castello di Balsorano. gia teatTO delle folli gesta del Boia
Scarlatto. Accanto al sadico dottor Lyutak/Hargitay ritroviamo. nel
ruolo della moglie devota e masochista (Fa' di me quello che
vuoi ... Io ti amo come sei. Sono tua ... ). Rita Calderoni, che gia
aveva lavorato per Polselli in La verita secondo Satana e sarebbe
tornata come lussuriosa vampira nel gia citato Riti. magie nere e
segrete orge ne! Trecenro. Due le versioni in ci neromanzo: la prima,

in bianco e nero, pubblicara da Cinesex nel I 972; la seconda, a colo-
ri ma piu condensata, presentata nel n. 40 della rivista Gin Film
(Milano, agosto 1989).
SEQUENZA SCELTA: Oopo aver letto la lettera in cui Herbenle
chiede di lasciarlo peri l suo bene, Marci a clichiara di amarlo com'e
e di essere disposta a subire le sue sadiche pratiche sessuali per dar-
gli piacere. Mentre con uno suano strumento fallifonne tonnenta il
corpo nudo della moglie, lacerandone le carni, Herbert riesce a rag-
gi ungere r orgasmo.

octor Herbert Lyutak. an impotent scientist married to
Marcia, finds pleasure only when he tortures and kills
young and beautiful women. ln order to satisfy her mad
husband, the virgin wife masochisti call y submits herself to his
extravagant tortures. The police accuses Lyutak of the mysterious
murders. since he is the last person that has been seen in the com-
pany of one of the victims. however two new homicides exculpate
him, courtesy of a perfect al ibi. As a matter of fact, the culprit of
said murders is none other than his wife. intent on diverting the
inqui1ies and save her beloved consort in the process. When Marcia
confesses to Herbert that she is a murderess too. her ni ece Joaquine.
who has fallen for her aunt, courtesy of a Lesbian relati onship the
two women share, loses conuol and kills her in the tragic finale
before losing her life as well , at the hands of the dying scientist.
NOTES: Mad Doctor . Lyutak is poru-ayed by mu. cled Mickey
Hargitay, the ex husband of blonde "bomb" Jayne Mansfield, a con-
stant presence in several Italian genre movies of the '60s. from
sword & sandal films (Loves of Hercules) to westerns (Tre Colpi di
Winchester per Ringo), as well as the bizarre icon of the cult sexy-
horror outing 11 Boia Scarlatto/8/oody Pit of Horror ( 1966).
Characterized by a delirious. unintentionally campy" acting (a
clear example of thls is the scene in which, plagued by his pangs of
conscience after havi ng tortured his wife. he screams before the
mirror Hyena! ... You're a hyena!>>). Hargitay was to be featured.
again under the direction of Polselli. in the horror Riti, Magie Nere
e Segrete Orge ne! Trecento (The Reincamation of lsabel, 1973),
returning to the real sets of castle of Balsorano, already featured in
Bloody Pit of Horror. Side-by-side with sadistic Doctor Lyutakl
Hargitay we find, once agrun, as the madman's devoted and
masochisti c wife (Do whatever you want with me ... I love you just
the way you are. T' m yours .. ), Rita Calderoni, who had already
worked with Polselli in La Verita Sec011do Satarw and was to be fea-
tured as the lustful vampire woman in the already-mentioned The
Reincarnation of babel.
CHOSEN SEQUENCE: After havi ng read the letter with which
Herbert asks her to leave him for her own sake. Marcia declares to
love him just the way he is and that she is willing to submit herself
to his sadistic sexual practices to please him. While he torments her
with an odd phaUus-shaped object, rending her tlesh, he finally
manages to have an orgasm.
