Who are my Friends Favorite Disney Princesses?
Ever since girls are introduced to princesses around the preschool age, most have a
fascination with them for a great part of their childhood. Not every little girl can love each
princess equally, or even have a matching dress-up dress to all of the princesses, its common
nature for them to choose their favorite. I grew up as the oldest child so I had no influence of an
older sisters princess preference, so I had the unbiased choice of Ariel as my personal favorite
Disney princess. Girls grow up in different households that have different situations, therefore
they could have a biased favorite Disney princess. This brought up the question of who are my
friends favorite Disney princesses? If I ask 27 of my friends that are girls to choose their
favorite princess from the list of Ariel, Belle, Aurora, Cinderella, Snow White, Jasmine,
Pocahontas, Mulan, Rapunzel, and Tiana, then I predict the most popular will be Ariel while the
least popular will be Tiana.
I made a list of Austin High School female students that I could easily get in contact with
for my experimental unit. I included seniors, juniors, and sophomores to make sure that older
girls didnt have a biased opinion of their favorite princess compared to younger girls. Then I
asked them the big question: Who is your favorite Disney princess? They had to choose between
the 10 official Disney princesses, which I found on the official disney princess website (http://
princess.disney.com/). I put together a list of these princesses so each girl could choose from the
same list and not forget about any princesses. As I asked each girl who their favorite Disney
princess was I had them sign their name and I marked one tally for the princess they are attracted

to. I used replication of the experiment to make sure I was getting an accurate measure on the
most popular disney princesses.
There were not many challenges collecting this data because many girls are willing to
talk about their favorite princesses, in fact, they were very enthusiastic about the subject. Most of
the girls I talked to were Red Jackets because they were easiest to reach for me. Therefore, this
was convenience sampling. Some people even argued with me that some of the princesses
werent actually princesses. The most argued princess was Pocahontas because she is just the
daughter of the Chief of the tribe she belongs to. Another concern was that many people didnt
even know who princess Tiana was. She is one of the newer princesses from the movie Princess
and the Frog which many teenagers arent familiar with because they didnt watch it as a child.
The tallies were an easy way to help me determine the most loved Disney princess. I
could easily look at the tallies and tell Ariel was the most popular Disney princess and Tiana and
Pocahontas were the least popular. To get an accurate view of all the data I found the percents for
each princess. I did this by counting the total number of girls I collected data from, which was
27, then dividing the total number of girls that preferred a certain princess by 27.
Ariel: (6/27) = .2222 = 22.22%
Mulan: (5/27) = .1852 = 18.52%
Cinderella: (4/27) = .1481 = 14.81%
Belle: (3/27) = .1111 = 11.11%
Rapunzel: (3/27) = .1111 = 11.11%
Snow White: (3/27) = .1111 = 11.11%
Durrett 3
Aurora: (2/27) = .741 = 7.41%
Jasmine: (1/27) = .370 = 3.70%
Pocahontas: (0/27) = 0 = 0%
Tiana: (0/27) = 0 = 0%
Some of these princesses are statistically more significant than others like Ariel and Pocahontas.
Aurora and Belle are not statistically significant because the difference of how many girls like
them are not very large. Ariel is obviously the most loved princess, but why? Ariel wears the
skimpiest clothing of all of the princesses and therefore the audience can tell that she has the best
body. Thats what most all of the teenage girls in America are obsessed with. They like Ariel
because of her bodacious body, or could it be her hunky lover, Eric? Teenage girls are also

obsessed with cute boys, and although Eric is a character in an animated movie, girls still have
crushes on him. Mulan comes in second place because she is a strong and independent girl. She
temporarily gave up being a girl to become a boy just so she could fight in the war and prove
that men and women are equal in most ways. Mulan is a hero to many girls and thats why they
love her so much. Cinderella comes in third place, and this is because she is the most well-
known princess and has the most well-known story. I think some girls dont choose Cinderella as
their favorite princess because of this factor. They want to be thought of as different and not
basic, so they choose a more less-known character. Belle, Snow White, and Rapunzel are tied in
fourth place because they do not have the best stories. They are all beautiful princesses but have
no quality that is extreme enough to be the most loved princess. Belle has the Beast, Snow White
has the 7 Dwarves, and Rapunzel has the hair, but thats all they really have. Aurora or Sleeping
Beauty is probably the prettiest of all the princesses. I found that the only girls that chose
Aurora were blonde and I think thats what Aurora is known for, her beautiful and perfect blonde
hair. Jasmine is also a very pretty princess but I think she is forgotten about a lot. In her story she
is not the main character, Aladdin is and this may be the reason she does not have many girls that
are infatuated with her. Pocahontas and Tiana are sadly tied in last place with no one that chose
them as their favorite princess. Pocahontas doesnt have any votes because not a lot of girls think
she is a real princess. Tiana doesnt have any votes because she is a very new princess that not
many teenage girls even knew existed.
There are no confounding variables in my experiment. If I would have asked girls that
have never seen the disney princess movies or known nothing about the disney princesses then
Durrett 5
that would have been a confounding variable. It would effect the outcome because the girl would
have to guess their favorite princess and that throws all of the data and my conclusions off.
Princesses are a very common topic when talking to very young girls, but not so much
with high school girls. Thats why this subject is interesting, its unusual for high school girls to
be talking about princesses. The data taken now makes sense when really thinking about why
girls like/dislike certain princesses. My hypothesis that Ariel was the most popular princess and
Tiana was the least popular were correct.
