The Microscope
An important invention in the development of science and medicine was the microscope. It was 415 ...the
principle that light could be 425 ... or bent, by a glass lens. It was soon discovered that tiny objects could be
magnified 435 si!e when viewed 445 a glass lens that had been ground and polished in a specific 4/5 .... .
Although the principle was "nown to the #hinese as early as $%%% A.&, it was not until the $'th and $(th
centuries in )urope 4,5 it was 4.5 to practical use in the form of eyeglasses. In )urope the first
microscope was invented by brothers *acharias and +ans ,anssen, two &utch eyeglass-ma"ers, around $./%.
They built a compound microscope, so called because of its two lenses. The most significant development
and use of the microscope during this period, 465 , belongs to another &utch optician, Antonie van
0eeuwenhoe" 1$2'3-$43'5. 6orn in &elft, +olland, he became s"illed at 475 ... very sharp and accurate
magnifying lenses. 7ome of his single-lens microscopes were able to magnify up to three hundred times the
4105 si!e, and around $22% he began serious study using these instruments. +e was the first to discover
bacteria and other microscopic organisms, calling these tiny creatures animalcules.

Throughout east 0ondon, new buildings go up, and >>>1$5 tenants move in, often before the

four in the morning by a scratching sound. It seemed to be coming from the wall between the
bedroom and the living room. It was a1n5 >>>1.5 sound - sharp nails tearing up the cavity walls
and racing along underneath the floorboards. :9e called in the local health office, and a private
firm. The >>>125 were ripped up and a programme of poisoning was carried out. 9ell, the
scratching at night stopped. 6ut the idea of our new home was ruined. It didn=t feel li"e a home
any longer. In the end we just wanted to get out.: In some parts of the capital, there has been an
