DESCRIPTION OF CRAIOVA PENITENCIARY

At the beginning of its existence,during the period 1894-1897,the Maximum Security

Penitentiary in raio!a "as #ocated in a side area of the city,but in time the city extended,
inc#uding this unit as "e##$
%he area of the penitentiary of &1,8'7 s(m has remained the same for the #ast 1)) years$

*n terms of topography,the city of raio!a #ies on the #eft ban+ of the ri!er ,iu,at 4 +m
distance from it,ranging bet"een the t"o be#ts of hi##s,to the South -uco!at hi##s and to the
.orth,/hercesti hi##s$
%he year it "as put in operation,the penitentiary "as part of the category of the
impro!ed penitentiaries in our country$*t "as bui#t to suit a more ad!anced degree of
detention and separation, in comparison "ith the t"o prisons a#ready existing in raio!a$
%he ne" bui#ding "as pro!ided "ith medium and #arge ce##s and rooms,ensuring
security conditions designed to e#iminate the "orries of the boyars and merchants of the
time$
*n 19)),after three years of being put into operation,the penitentiary counted a tota# of
0)) prisons,the prison being mixed,housing both ma#e prisoners as "e## as fema#e prisoners,
con!icted and in pre!enti!e custody of common #a"$
*n 19)7,"ith the uprising of the peasants,the number of the persons detained in
raio!a Penitentiary progressi!e#y increased from '49 prisoners on Apri# 4
