PREPARATION GUIDE

Dear delegates,

This document is your preparation guide, which will help you take steps to become a
prepared and successful BIMUN delegate.

YOUR TASKS IN THE NEXT PERIOD

First preparation phase

1. Research:

Research websites which are recommended in the document Research
Overview (the document can be found on www.bimun-unaserbia.org,
in the Preparation section).
Research the United Nations website, www.un.org, where you will find
information on the system, activities and goals of the UN, organisation
and competencies of your assigned committee, as well as the theme
which will be discussed at the conference.
Research the country or organization which you will represent at the
assigned committee, whose national interests and positions you will stand
for during the whole conference:
In particular, pay attention to the following:
a) Find out all you can about the country/ organization you represent (its
history, culture, political structure, geopolitical position, economical
and political system, foreign policy, and all relevant general
information).
b) The position of the assigned country in the United Nations and its
activities in the designated committee. You can search this
information out on the website of the Permanent Missions to the UN
www.un.int/index-en/webs.html, or use e-mail to post specific,
theme related questions.
Research the theme which you will debate upon on the conference. The
information that can be found on our website in the Preparation section
can be of great help.
a) Determine your countrys strategy for the discussions which will be held
during the sessions. Strategy is very important in the preparation and
debating process.
b) Prepare documentation which might be of help during the debate.

Second preparation phase

1. Contact your colleague/ co-delegate, so you can get to know each other
and agree about creating a national strategy which you will stand for together
at the conference. Communication with your co-delegate will be of great
importance in the preparation of the Position Paper as well. Even though
every participant/ delegate has to write this document himself, you have to
keep in mind that the strategy and positions you and your co-delegate stand
for need to be consistent.

2. Prepare:

The questionnaire: the responses need to be sent the latest by
February 15th, 2010, to your committees e-mail.
Position Paper document. Information about the preparation of the
Position paper document can be found on our website in the Preparation
section (look for Position Paper Guidelines). The Position Paper needs
to be sent by March the 8th, 2010, to your committees e-mail.
Note: Participants who do not sent their Position Paper by the due date
will not be able to qualify for the awards.
Opening speech:
Note: relevant only for delegates of the Security Council and UNESCO
World Heritage Committee. Delegates will have two minutes to present
their country. Focus should be on the relevant topic, UN action, what your
country would like to discuss at the session, and what you consider to be
of great importance for the debating and resolving of the problem at hand.
It is very important that the opening speech is clear, direct and attention
grabbing. You will compose the opening speech together with your co-
delegate. If you need more information about this in particular, please
contact your committees chair person. You can find the e-mail address at
our web site.

3. Read the following documents:

Rules of Procedure for your committee. Rules of Procedure are the
key and primary document for communication and discussion
between the delegates and the President/ Chairperson at the session.
At the trial simulation on the first day of the conference, you will
have a chance to practice and familiarize yourselves with the rules
of the game.
The Rules of Procedure can be found on our website, in the
Preparation section.
Resolution Writing is a document which will help you to compose
a formal document according to the specific form, expressions, and
rules which exist in the United Nations themselves. This formal
document will be presented in front of the respective committee and
will be voted on. The adopting of a resolution is the end result of
the whole process that brings into accord and gathers interests of all
member countries at the session. The resolution is a document that
is the result of the collaboration and gathering of energy of all
countries and organizations at the session. Its adoption also signifies
a successful finish of the session and the BIMUN conference as well!
More information about Resolution Writing can be found on our
website in the Preparation section.

Note: All information related to preparation and documentation which can be of
great help can be found on our website, www.bimun-unaserbia.org in the
