LUSAS Modeller
Cust omisat ion
This addendum covers additions to the documentation required for version 13.1 for all
LUSAS software products.
Product Cust omi sat i on
After running LUSAS Modeller, a product specific menu entry will added to the menu
bar (with the exception of LUSAS Analyst) according to the product key that is in use.
The following menu bar entries will be added for each product:
Composite - for LUSAS Composite
Civil - for LUSAS Civil & Structural
Bridge - for LUSAS Bridge
The Bri dge and Ci vi l menu
The LUSAS Bridge menu options will appear as shown:
LUSAS Modeller Customisation

The LUSAS Civil & Structural menu options are similar and appear under the menu
bar name of Civil.
Gri l l age Wi zard
The grillage wizard enables LUSAS
users to generate two different
skewed bridge deck grillage
configurations as shown in Figure 1.
Dialogs allow straightforward input
of the data required. The wizard
accounts for multiple spans and also
applies support conditions. Groups
are also created to enable geometric
and material properties to be easily
assigned.

Vehicle Loads
Lane Load Wi zard
The Lane Load wizard generates a
uniform distributed lane load to
BS5400 in which the intensity is
calculated as follows:
For lengths over 30m:
Intensity = 151*(1/L)
0.475
KN/m.
For lengths less than 30m:
Intensity = 9 KN/m.
Once the load is defined by running
the wizard the HA lane loading
should be assigned to the model by selecting a point defined at the origin of loading
and dragging the load definition from the Treeview onto the graphics display.
The origin of the load is defined as
shown on the accompanying
diagram:
0 - centre
1 - bottom left corner
2 - left centre
3 - top left corner

Abnormal Vehi cl e Load Wi zard
The abnormal vehicle load wizard
generates HB vehicle loading to
BS5400 for any number of axles.
The intensity of each wheel load =
2.5 x the number of HB units (kN).
The origin or the HB vehicle is at the
centre of the vehicle.
As with HA lane loading the
abnormal vehicle load should be
assigned to the model by selecting a
point defined at the origin of loading and dragging the load definition from the
Treeview onto the graphics display.
Abnormal Vehicle Loading Arrangement
Kni fe Edge Load Wi zard
The knife edge load wizard generates
knife edge loading to BS5400 where
the intensity is load/unit width.
The knife edge loading should be
assigned to the model by selecting a
point defined at the origin of loading
and dragging the load definition from
the Treeview onto the graphics
display.

Aut ol oader Wi zard
The Autoloader Wizard substantially
speeds up the creation of the files
required to calculate worst case
loading effects.
The use of the Autoloader wizard
and the interaction between the
Wizard, the Autoloader program, and
the LUSAS Modeller and Solver is
described fully in the Autoloader
User Manual.

Prestress Wizard
7
Prest ress Wi zard
The LUSAS Prestress
facility is intended to
allow engineers to
determine the stresses
in the concrete of pre-
stressed structures.
The beam may either be
modelled as a series of
beam elements or a
mesh of plane stress
elements.
In both cases the
location of each tendon
or group of tendons is
defined by a set of
Points that are connected by a spline.
The tendon (and in the case of prestress for beams, the lines representing the beam)
must be selected prior to selecting the prestress wizard.
The prestress wizard takes account of the effect of losses due to the following effects:
Friction and Wobble (Tendon profile losses)
Draw-in
Elastic shortening (as % loss in pre-stress force)
Shrinkage of the concrete (as % loss in pre-stress force)
Relaxation of the steel (as % loss in pre-stress force)
Concrete creep (as % loss in pre-stress force)
The prestress wizard computes the equivalent forces due to the prestress cable in
accordance with BS5400 . The prestress forces are transferred to the beam or plane
stress elements automatically. After load assignment the forces may be visualised if
required.
Using this simplified force approach, the effects of prestress can be defined in a
separate linear loadcase which can be combined with the other load cases to compute
the overall structural behaviour.

Prest ress for Beams
The line defining the tendon should be defined as a spline passing through a set of
user-defined points, ensuring sufficient points are defined on the cable to adequately
model the loading. Use the command Geometry>Line>Spline> Points to do this.
To comput e t he l oadi ng f or one t endon:
Select the line defining the tendon
Select all of lines that define the concrete beam
Select the Prestress wizard command
The prestress dialog will appear.
Select the Analysis type and define the prestress parameters.
Click the Apply button.
The wizard will compute the prestress loading and apply it to the beam. To enable the
loading to be visualised the line should be meshed with the appropriate engineering
beam elements (BEAM, GRIL or BMS3). Geometric and concrete properties should
be assigned and support conditions added in the normal way.
Not es. The sequence must be completed for each tendon in the model. Currently the
beam must lie in the XZ or XY plane with the cable eccentricity orthogonal to the
beam
Prest ress for Pl ane St ress
The line defining the tendon should be defined as a spline passing through a set of
user-defined points, ensuring sufficient points are defined on the cable to adequately
model the loading. Use the command Geometry>Line>Spline> Points to do this.

Click the Apply button.
The wizard will compute the prestress loading and apply it to the plane stress elements
which should be assigned appropriate geometric and material properties.

Within LUSAS Modeller a library of standard BS sections has been added. These can

The user should select the local axes for the member based on the analysis type. The
section may be turned through 90 degrees to reverse the Major and Minor axes. Shear
deformation may neglected by selecting the Exclude Shear Deformation option.
This multiplies the shear area by 10

. Once selected the user should add the chosen
section properties to the Treeview using the Apply button. The section is then
available for assigning to the appropriate line members.
Beam Stress Recovery
11
Beam St ress Recovery
Beam stress recovery has been made
available using the user definable
results utility.
To use this facility the results file
must be loaded on top of the model
file. The user is required to input the
beam section modulus of each
member type. These are assigned to
the appropriate line elements from
which the beam stresses are
computed. As well as the section
moduli the yield stress may be input to enable the utilisation factor to be computed.
Results may be printed or displayed using the standard facilities or printed from the
bridge/civil menu using the print options provided. A typical set of output results is
shown.

input the composite strength data.
These are assigned to the appropriate
surface elements from which the
composite failure criteria are
computed.
