Central Line (Mumbai Suburban Railway)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Central Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway
is a public transit system serving Mumbai,
Maharashtra, India. It consists of 24 stations from
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) to Kalyan. The
entire line is at grade.
The Central Line in Mumbai consists of three major
corridors, which bifurcate as they run into suburban
satellite towns. Two corridors (one local and other
through) on Central Railway run from CST to
Kalyan (55 km),
[3]
from where it bifurcates into two
lines one running up to Kasara (67 km) in the
north-east and the other running up to Khopoli
(61 km) in the south-east. These two corridors
constitute the 'Main' Line. The Central main line
shares one station with the Western line at Dadar.
They consist of a fleet of DC as well as dual-
powered EMUs. The major car sheds on this line
are at Kurla and Kalwa. There are fast and slow
locals here for suburban service. Slow locals halt at
every station, while fast locals halts vary between
Byculla, Dadar, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli,
Bhandup, Mulund, Thane, Dombivali and Kalyan.
All services plying beyond Kalyan run slow. Trains
usually start from and terminate at important stations.

The line is being constructed
by CIDCO at a cost of 14.12 billion.
[5]
It is expected to be operational by 2015.
[6]
The project was started by the railways in collaboration with the state and CIDCO in 1996. At the time it cost an
estimated 4.95 billion.

Electrification
CR converted the Central Line from the previously used 1500V DC electrification to 25,000V AC on 5 May 2013
from Kalyan to Khopoli and Kalyan to Kasara.
[9]
Electrification on the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Thane-Kalyan
section was completed on 12 January 2014.
[10]
CR plans to switch from 1,500 V DC to 25 KV AC on the entire
suburban railway stretch between Thane and CST by May 2014.
[11]
According to officials, using the 25,000V AC on the CR suburban system, consisting of 1632 km of tracks, will
lead to faster trains, better frequency of fast trains during peak hours, fewer breakdowns, better suspension for
jerk-free travel,
[12]
and substantial savings in terms of energy and money.
[13]
The conversion will reduce
maintenance-related failures as 75 sub-stations are needed to supply power to suburban trains under the DC
system, while only 11 sub-stations are required for the AC system. The AC system needs lighter overhead wires
than that of DC, which has thicker and heavier contact wires and pantographs that are prone to fast wear and tear.
The railway is estimated to save around 120 crore annually from reduced transmission loss and regenerative
braking, and conserve 33% energy as a result of the conversion.
[14]
Services
4/18/2014 Central Line (Mumbai Suburban Railway) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Line_(Mumbai_Suburban_Railway) 8/9
Since November 2011, all services on the Central Line have been running on 12 cars. In preparation for
introducing 15 car services, CR extended platforms at Byculla, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Mulund and Dombivli
stations, from the current 270 metres to 330 metres,
[15]
in order to accommodate 15 coach trains. Yard re-
modelling along with relocation of one signal at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) was also undertaken. CR also
identified the stabling line at Kurla to accommodate 15-car trains.
[16]
The total cost of the work was estimated at
37.5 million (US$630,000).
[17]
The first 15-car service, on the Central Line, departed from Chhatrapati Shivaji
Terminus to Kalyan at 7:33 pm on 16 October 2012.
[18]
As of March 2014, 75 rakes operate 825 services on the Central Line daily, of which 809 are 12-car and 16 are
15-car services.
[19]
Train Management System
The Train Management System (TMS) helps in real-time monitoring of trains in the control room and also reflects
on station's indicators. TMS enables commuters waiting for a train to know exactly how late it is. Railway officials
stated that they were aiming to provide the arrival status of trains for the next 10 minutes.
The contract for the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of TMS on Central Railway stations was
awarded to Bombardier Transportation in 2008.
[20]
The system was implemented on the Central Line between
Masjid Bunder and Vidyavihar stations in April 2011. On 25 July 2012, TMS was extended till Kalyan. CR plans
to implement the system between Kalyan-Karjat and Kalyan-Kasara under MUTP-III.
