Editorial
Welcome to the June edition of the Loddon Valley Link.
At last summer has arrived and we can look forward to
some wonderful attractions in the Churches and Villages
that are a part of the Loddon Valley.
In the contents box on this page you will find
highlighted some of this months attractions, but I would like to point
out one or two as well.
The big attraction in Sherfield is
the Summer Fete on June 14
th
(Pages 30/31). There will be a
host of attractions and
entertainments for the whole
family. While you read about
Sherfield, remember to start
planning for the Sherfield Show
to be held on 6
th
Sept. (Page 34)
We are finally putting the finishing
touches to our new website which
will be ready next month. The
website and the email addresses
will be changing to
loddonvalleylink.org.uk but the old
ones will continue to work so you
wont miss anything. See also the
article about the easy fund raising
scheme (on Page 50)
As ever, comments are welcome
to editor@loddonvalleylink.org.uk

The Front cover features House Twenty8 the coffee shop in Sherfield.
Thanks to Brian Archer and Simon Boase for the picture! By the way.
do any of you have photographs that we could use on the front of our

PERCYS PLANT SALE
Percys Plant Sale was held in Sherfield Village Hall on
Saturday 10th May. Due to the windy wet weather it had
to be held indoors, but there was an excellent turnout
nonetheless. Many of the popular plants were sold out
within the first 30 to 45 minutes.
Plant stalls were organised by St. Leonards Church and the
Garden Club, with many volunteers both bringing
plants and helping in a variety of ways. Our
thanks go to all who came and purchased plants
and spent their money; to those who brought
plants and helped in the sales; to P.O.S.H. for
organising the coffee morning; to Sandy and
Janet for the raffle and to Paul Barratt and
Lorraine for the donations of bananas. A total of
887 was raised, to be shared between the
Village Hall, the Garden Club and the Church. It
was good to see Daisy Sims present. It was her
late husband Percy who started the sale many
years ago to raise money for the Village Hall and the Church, two of the
institutions Percy loved so much and did so much for. The Plant Sale is a
legacy that continues as a memory of Percy.
Brian Archer and Donald Dawson
Envelope Donation Scheme
Our thanks go to all who contributed to the magazine via the envelope
scheme held in April. A total of 651 was raised for which the management
committee are most grateful. We are endeavouring to introduce more
colour pages to the Link, but each extra colour page increases
the cost of printing, currently running at around 1,000 per
month. Our distribution now stands at 2,000 copies, a figure
likely to rise as more houses are built at Sherfield Park. While
we are dependant on revenue from advertising to pay for the
magazine, we have a policy to keep the advertising content less
than 50% of the magazine content. This is a fine balancing act which our
treasurer does with consummate skill, so little extras such as the envelope
scheme help to keep our finances in good order. We are so grateful for any
contributions made towards the cost of maintaining the high standard of the
magazine.

Pastoral Letter
What have we done today?
One of the easiest things in life is to put off until tomorrow what we
should be doing today, especially when the deed to be done is
challenging and perhaps a little
uncomfortable. How easy it is to
make an excuse that the particular
task would be better postponed for
another day, or week or even
longer. The hallmark of Christianity
is action, not words. When Jesus
took that final walk into Jerusalem
knowing that he was about to be
tortured and killed, how easy would
it have been to have said to himself
my disciples are not ready (they
werent) so lets put this off for another year to give me more time
to prepare them. But Jesus did not fall to that temptation, and in
so doing went through death followed by a triumphant resurrection
that changed the course of history. The following is the final verse
of a poem by an unknown writer.
We shall reap such joys in the by and by,
But what have we sown today?
We shall build us mansions up in the sky,
But what have we built today?
Oh, how sweet it is in fond dreams to bask,
But right here and now we must do our task.
Yes, this is the thing our souls must ask,
Just what have we done today?
All the words that Jesus spoke, his wonderful teaching, the parables
and his dialogue with the disciples and others around him would
have come to nothing without the action that was the hallmark of
his ministry. And the greatest action was his sacrificial death on the
cross and his resurrection that followed. So in our small way,
perhaps an evening prayer for us should be just what have we
done today? Donald

Review of Loddon Players "CONFUSIONS"
by Alan Ayckbourn.
I thoroughly enjoyed my night at the theatre last month. A
full house greeted the cast and were quickly engaged in the
first play.
Confusions is a series of 5 one act plays
designed to shine a light on some of the
hidden mores of humanity. The plays A Talk
in the Park, Mother Figure, Drinking
Companion, Between Mouthfuls and
Gosforths Fete are tenuously linked by
performers but each stands alone.
The opener, probably one of the more downbeat plays and
rightly moved to the beginning of the five, demonstrated
some admirable movement and timing from the cast. The
loneliness was lightened by some inappropriate paper
holding from Nick Robinson.
Following some scene shifting Mother Figure emerged
slightly inauspiciously. Perhaps one of my least favourite
episodes but purely from a writing standpoint, the acting
was very skilfully judged.
More shifting led to Drinking Companion and a hotel
scene with more inappropriate lewdness from inspired
performances led by Pete Cook getting increasingly
inebriated (stick to beer in future) and flirtatious followed by
a delicious ending.
The tables were turned again in Between
Mouthfuls and some beautifully timed
performances and skilful staging
orchestrated by the waitress, Emily Browne
Gosforth Fete was the comic highlight
demonstrating the casts ability including a
lovely wet look from Chris Horton. Pete
Francis final prop malfunction left us with
a laugh.
Not one of Ayckbourns finest works but the acting outshone
the material and kept the audience engaged and laughing.
Excellent staging, direction and acting produced a thoroughly
enjoyable evening. Look out for the next production.

VILLAGE FETE SAT 14
TH
JUNE another plea for help!
As a traditional community-based event, our fete relies on the efforts of
dozens of volunteers, donors and sponsors and of course on the contributions
made by the hundreds of visitors who come from all over to enjoy the day. As
you can imagine there's a lot to do and we always have work for willing
helpers, so please join us and help to make the 2014 fete the best yet. All
proceeds this year will be donated to local charities (Hampshire and Isle of
Wight Air Ambulance and village charities including the Village Hall and St
Leonards Church). If you can spare some time please phone 880075. Also
see the new Fete website at www.sherfieldfete.org.uk

NEW CROCKERY
The crockery in the main hall kitchen has all been replaced and is available for
use by all the hall users. To keep it in good condition and for hygiene reasons
please use the dishwasher in the bar area. Some groups have expressed
concern that everything comes out wet but, as it is also very hot, it will air dry
in 5 or 10 minutes. If you need help in operating the dishwasher please speak
to Loraine, our Hall Manager. Many thanks to Priscilla O'Rourke (Loddon
Quilters) for opening her garden over the Bank Holiday for the purpose of
selling off the old crockery.
.LIDDELL HALL
Due to the age of the lighting fitments in the Liddell Hall, it has now become
impossible to obtain replacement parts and we have had to replace them with
lights similar to those in the main hall.

Text for a Month with Fathers Day and our annual Songs of
Praise on the Green - Colossians 3: 12 - 14 The NIV Bible
Therefore, as Gods chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves
with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with
each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against
someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put
on Love.
Prayer for the Month.
Living God, we thank you that you are here among us as a loving Father,
watching over his children. We recognise our need of you and we
acknowledge our emptiness deep within. Help us to see our need for
everything you have given to us, if only we could but see it, the wonder of
your love, the constancy of your care and the greatness of your mercy.
You have made yourself known to us in Christ. Inspire us now through the
living presence of your Holy Spirit. Teach us to live this and every day in
the warmth of your presence. Help us to lift up our lives as well as our
music and song in praise of all you do for us each day. Accept what we
offer because we offer it to give you glory that is rightfully yours in heaven
and on earth now and for evermore.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Prayer Points for June
Pray for the those who have the task of choosing the next
leader of our benefice. May they be united in the their task
and may they recognise the person you send to us.
Pray for the missing girls of Nigeria and for a peaceful out-
come for the search for them. Pray for the future of Syria and
Afghanistan that the bitterness and violence may end. Pray for peace in
Ukraine and solutions for the problems in their divided country
Pray for fine weather for all the outdoor village events happening this
month and that many will come and enjoy the fun and fellowship which
these create.
Pray for those who are suffering from illness to themselves or within their
families and friends, may they be granted Gods peace.
Give thanks for the joy of summertime.

NWR Report by Gill Fearon
It might seem that NWR has a fascination with chocolate.
Back in the mid-90s some of us did a tour of the Mars
factory in Slough, guided by a former members husband who worked
there. Wearing white coats and hairnets we sampled freshly made Mars
bars and came home with a box of goodies!
In 2001 we researched the history of chocolate, sampled various types
and read the book/watched the film of Chocolat by Joanne Harris. Then
recently we invited Bramley and Old Basing NWR groups to a talk on the
story of chocolate by Adrian Smith of Mortimer Chocolate Company.
Adrian was a former cocoa taster at Mars, a job which took him to the
tropics to select the best. He told us about how cocoa is grown and how
it is turned into chocolate. Cocoa trees only grow in the tropics and
originated in the Amazon basin.
To start with it was used for drinking (no Cadburys Dairy Milk!) and the
Spanish discovered its delights, shipping it across the Atlantic. Over time
English sailors stole cocoa trees and planted them in its colonies so that it
became a valuable cash crop growing on smallholdings in West Africa. In
South America it is grown on plantations, e.g. Brazil, Peru and Ecuador.
The cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao) has multiple trunks and grows to a
height of about 20 feet. Its pods are colourful with reddish hues and
machetes are used to cut them from the trees and open them. The beans
inside are left on a layer of, and covered by, banana leaves to ferment.
They are purple to begin with, then turn brown and the mouldy ones are
removed. West Africa supplies the major chocolate companies (Cadburys,
Nestle and Mars amongst others) and the price of the beans fluctuates
according to the market conditions.
The nibs inside the beans are roasted to form cocoa mass and this is then
squeezed to release cocoa butter. When tasting, Adrian explained that he
is looking for fruity notes, not wet dog! Good dark chocolate has about
70% cocoa mass (Bourneville has about 30%) and has sugar added to
make it palatable. White chocolate is cocoa butter with added fat and
sugar not so healthy! We then tasted dark chocolate from Ecuador and
West Africa to compare the flavours we didnt all agree on which was
best. Incidentally, like red wine, chocolate should not be kept in the
fridge! We rounded off the evening with tea/coffee, chocolate gateau and
chocolate coated popcorn! A very tasty and interesting evening!
Our next event is our annual ramble with a pub meal, then a meeting on
researching names.

the month (excluding bank holidays) at 11.00am
in the Village Hall, New Street. It is a great
place to meet other residents and have a gossip.
It is also an informal place for residents to raise
any concerns they may have with me or one of
the councillors. So please come along children
are very welcome.
The situation with the weekly bus to Reading for shoppers is still under
discussion by the Borough Council but representations have been made
on your behalf that it is an essential services which must be retained.
Many of you will have seen that the West End Green pond has now
been renovated and is a lovely place to relax
when walking around the parish. I hope you
also use the recreation ground as well
especially if you have young children. Loddon
Junior Football club use the ground and would
welcome any children from the Parish who
wish to join. So if you have a budding David
(or Victoria!!) Beckham in the family contact the Club to find out more.
(Fred Berntsen Tel No 01256 882 798)
I have now posted a list of your Councillors in the notice boards for
your information. Please contact me if you have any issues you wish the
Parish Council to investigate or any suggestions to make the area
better.
Please contact Linda Bishop on 0118 9332106 if you wish to use the
Village Hall, and myself on 01189 332379 if you would like to enquire
about holding an event on the recreation ground and use the pavilion
on site .
Have a great Summer. Penny Mayo

Flowers, Produce and Crafts
Now is the time to start preparing!
Last year saw entries increase and the judges were impressed by their
quality. Building on this success, we have again made a number of
changes to the classes to keep them lively and pose new challenges.
We have also changed some of the mechanisms by which awards are
made, to give more people a chance of winning a trophy!
This year will also see:
The introduction of a new Novice
section for someone who hasnt won a
cup or trophy before, so 2014 is the year
to give it a go.
The chance to grow something and
win the Bowman cup. Also, a new Junior
Photography section: both for children
up to age 14.
The oddest shaped vegetable, in the
Novelty classes - so if your prize carrots have taken a turn for the
worse, or your potatoes sprouted
three heads, all is not lost.
New Certificates of Achievement in
many sections of the schedule.
We do hope you will take part, even if just
for fun, and help show what incredible skills
and talent there are in the Sherfield district.
For full details, please go to.
www.sherfieldshow.hampshire.org.uk.
Paper copies of the schedule will be
available in the Coffee Shop,
HouseTwenty8, from early May.

Our first garden visit of the season on June 16
th
, is to Sandleford Place,
near Newbury. The gardens at Sandleford Place spread over 5-acres,
and are more
exuberant than
manicured with the
River Enborne
flowing through.
There are various
areas of shrub and
mixed borders which
create a romantic,
naturalistic effect.
There are a huge
range of plants,
many unusual,
placed to show them
to their best effect of
colour, flower,
foliage and scents with a number of fine trees setting off the more
formal parts.
If you cant make it, Sandleford Place is open
all summer under the NGS scheme. Just call
them to make an appointment to visit.
Our first garden visit in July is to Whispers
at Charter Alley. More details to follow in
next months Loddon Valley Link.
Thank you to everybody who donated plants
for Percys Plant Sale last month. They were
all of excellent quality and we had many
happy customers. A final reminder that we
will have a stall at the village fete on 14
th

June and will be very happy to take any spare plants you may still have
off your hands.

Bramley Church of England Primary
The month of May is always a very busy one in the life of the school.
This year has been no exception.
Year 6 have applied themselves brilliantly to the rigour and challenge
of the National Tests. The good humour and effort that each child
showed was excellent. The whole school supported this most
important occasion with their good conduct throughout the week.
The first Heads Round Table was held on 21
st
May. This was the
first of a regular opportunity for all stakeholders to engage directly
with myself and the strategic future of the school. The focus was on
the learning community and how the vision of #brilliantbramley can
be extended out into the community and how the inspiration of the
area can reach into the school.
School are supporting the Bramley Fun Day with an information stall,
singers and the chance to score a penalty against Mr Moore. It will
be a privilege to be part of the event, with so many village and
community members present. I will also be attending the Sherfield
Fete. This is in further recognition of the central importance of
community in the wider life of Bramley Primary School.
Look out for our revised fortnightly newsletter which is published on
the school website and by parentmail. It includes examples of pupil
learning and a list of key dates for your diaries.
Enjoy the sunshine!
Mr A Higgs. Headteacher
