overview
so you want
to be a wise guy?
topic
Worldly wisdom versus godly wisdom
description
We live in a world that is at war with the things of God. All you need to do
is turn on the TV and you can see a world that belittles Gods wisdom and
elevates worldly wisdom. As Christians, we need to have a different set of
standards and values from the rest of the world. This study defines two
types of wisdom and their respective outcomes.
key verse
But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace
loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and
sincere (James 3:17).
biblical basis
James 3:13-18
the big idea
Being a Christian means living by Gods standards and values rather than
the worlds.
aims of the study
Examine two different types of wisdom and values.
Help students discover the outcome of both types of wisdom.
Help students implement a choice to live by Gods wisdom rather than
by the worlds.
preparation
For the introduction, purchase or borrow a Jenga game. Set up the game
on a sturdy, flat surface.
outline

to be a wise guy?
introduction
Before the meeting begins, set up the Jenga game block tower on a flat sur-
face. Begin by asking the group, What is it that people try to build their
lives on? Allow the students to respond one at a time. After each reply, pull
out one block from the stack and place it on the top of the stack. You can
even have students pull out the blocks as they reply to the question. Add a
few responses of your own, as you continue to pull out blocks from the
stack. Eventually the stack will fall over because of the faulty foundation.
Discuss the following:
1. What are some of the shaky foundations we build our lives on?
2. What is it that makes a foundation firm or shaky?
3. What does it take to build a solid, firm foundation on Jesus Christ?
Make a transition into the study by talking about how our founda-
tions are shaped by the standards and values by which we live.
