DOUBLE WIN FOR KUB-BERJAYA ENVIRO SDN BHD AT THE SINGAPORE

ENVIRONMENTAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS 2013

KUB-Berjaya Enviro Sdn Bhd, the developer and operator of the Bukit Tagar
Sanitary Landfill, was awarded the Singapore Environmental Achievement Awards
(SEAA) 2013 in the Regional category on 22 August 2013 at the Conrad
Centennial Hotel, Singapore where the award ceremony was held.
In addition, KUB-Berjaya Enviro also won the overall award, the CDL Outstanding
Singapore Environmental Achievement Awards (SEAA) 2013 (winners from each of
the four categories are eligible to vie for the overall award) over Keppel Land Ltd and
Institute of Technical Education (ITE).
Launched in 1997, the SEAA is a premier award that addresses overall
environmental initiatives and awareness within an organisation. The award
recognises Singapore and South East Asian organisations that have shown
commitment to environmental and social responsibilities.
The criteria for the SEAA focuses on assessing the leadership displayed by the
company, the real environmental improvement made as well as the ability of an
organisation to establish procedures, train staff and innovate in order to achieve
breakthroughs in environmental performance.
Companies that are recognised by the Awards join an elite rank of businesses within
the region that have affirmed their commitment to environmental excellence and
protection of the natural environment.
The Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill is developed by KUB-Berjaya Enviro, and is one of
the largest and most advanced engineered sanitary landfills in South East Asia.
Since commencing operations in April 2005, Bukit Tagar is receiving 2,800 tonnes of
solid waste daily. With 120 million metric tonnes capacity, it can provide a waste
management solution for Kuala Lumpur and Selangor for over 60 years.
KUB-Berjaya Enviro adopted a holistic approach to the development of Bukit Tagar
with the objective of bringing solid waste management in the context of landfilling to
the next level by implementing several ground-breaking innovations and
technologies, such as the zero-discharge policy for treated effluent, reed bed
polishing and a comprehensive landfill gas management system for optimal
environmental protection.
The State-of-the-Art leachate treatment plant at Bukit Tagar is one of the largest fully
automated systems in South East Asia, incorporating unique features such as the
reed bed to provide additional treatment to improve the quality of treated leachate,
and the adoption of a zero-discharge policy for treated effluent (where treated
effluent is irrigated in designated zones instead of discharging in open waterways,
although it has achieved the standards allowing for discharge).
The landfill gas management system at Bukit Tagar is a self-initiated effort. The
standards implemented far exceed the requirements imposed by the Department of
Environment. Bukit Tagar is generating green energy from its 4.4MW gas engines
fuelled by methane produced by solid waste treated in the landfill.
Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill has the distinction of operating the largest grid-
connected biogas renewable energy facility under the Feed-in Tariff programme in
Malaysia, as well as having the most Certified Emission Reduction (carbon credits)
issued for a landfill project in South East Asia under the CDM scheme to date.
