Ubuntu 13.

10, codenamed Saucy Salamander has been released as per its


schedule on 17th October. If you did not upgrade from Ubuntu 13.04 to Ubuntu
13.10 and instead you did a clean install of Ubuntu 13.10, you might be
ondering hat are the things to do after installing Ubuntu 13.10.
!his is one of the first "uestion that pops up after installing any ne OS, hat
to do ne#t$ I ha%e pre%iously ritten on things to do after installing &lementary
OS 'una and Ubuntu 13.04, and no I am here ith the list of must to do things
after installing Ubuntu 13.10. (hile different people ha%e different re"uirement
and thus their to do list may differ from the one here, most of the things are
still essential after a clean install.
Must to do things after installing Ubuntu 13.10
Update Ubuntu 13.10:
)irst and foremost thing after installing Ubuntu 13.10 is to update the system.
Open a terminal *+trl,-lt,!. and use the folloing command/
sudo apt0get update 11 sudo apt0get upgrade
Install Ubuntu restricted extras:
2Ubuntu restricted e#tras3 consists of se%eral codecs that are not installed by
default. !he reason Ubuntu doesn4t include these codecs by default is because
of legal constraints in many countries. 5ut if you install these codecs, it is you
ho ould be held responsible for the usage and not Ubuntu. 6on4t orry its
safe to install these codecs. (ith these codecs installed, you can play different
media formats such as 783, 784, -9I and se%eral other formats. Install it using
the folloing command/
sudo apt0get install ubuntu0restricted0e#tras
Install Adobe Flash player:
&%en after installing e#tra codecs, you may face difficulties ith -dobe )lash
player. :ou may not be able to run :ou!ube %ideos is one of the e#ample. :ou
can install -dobe )lash player using the folloing command/
sudo apt0get install flashplugin0installer
Install V! "edia player:
!he default %ideo player !otem is "uite good but 9'+ is the best open source
media player for playing %ideos. -part from playing almost all ;ind of media
files, 9'+ can donload subtitles automatically and you can also play :ou!ube
%ideos ith subtitles. Install 9'+ player in Ubuntu 13.10 using the folloing
command/
sudo apt0get install %lc

Install additional dri,ers in Ubuntu 13.10:
:ou may suffer from (ireless and graphics card related problem. !o a%oid such
troubles, install the third part propriety dri%ers. Ao to Unity 6ash and search for
Softare 1 Updates. Open Softare 1 Updates and clic; on -dditional 6ri%ers
tab. If there are any additional propriety dri%ers for your system, it should be
listed here.
I"pro,e battery life and reduce o,erheating:
One of the important things to do is to ta;e care of your laptop4s battery life
and o%erheating issue. Until Ubuntu 1>.10, Bupiter as the best tool to reduce
o%erheating, but since its de%elopment has stopped, you can use !'8 or
+8U)=&C instead of Bupiter. Install !'8 using the folloing command/
sudo add0apt0repository ppa/linrunner<tlp
sudo apt0get update
sudo apt0get install tlp tlp0rd
sudo tlp start

Unity is not e%eryone4s fa%ourite, is it$ :ou don4t need to ditch Ubuntu Eust
because you hate Unity. Bust replace Unity ith your fa%ourite Anome or
+innamon.
Install Anome 3 in Ubuntu 13.10 using the folloing command/

Install latest stable +innamon in Ubuntu 13.10 using the folloing command/
sudo add0apt0repository ppa/gendal0lebihan0de%<cinnamon0stable
sudo apt0get update

Install 2a,a in Ubuntu 13.10:
Sooner or later, you4ll ha%e to install Ba%a. !here is simply no escaping from it,
no matter ho much you try. -ssuming that you are not going to do Ba%a
de%elopment, you4ll only need OpenB=&. Install Ba%a in Ubuntu 13.10 using the
folloing command/

fa%ourite +loud storage. :ou can install 6ropbo# from their ebsite or by using
this command/

online search suggestions in it. 5ut since it ill turn off all ;ind of online
suggestion, you might not ant to deteriorate your e#perience of Unity smart
scopes. So, here is an option for you. 6isable Eust the shopping suggestions and
;eep the rest *li;e (i;ipedia suggestions. in the 6ash. Use the folloing
