THE FOOTBALL RAMBLER for the hardcore enthusiasts 10 Most Baffling and Bizarre Moments in Soccer History Continued from last week 6 - 2006: Zinedine Zidane Headbutts Marco Materazzi! Picture the scene; Zinedine Zidane is his country's greatest, most experienced and important player. He has just dragged his country to the World Cup 2006 final in Germany after his team had all but been written off. He has turned back the years and reminded everyone just how good he used to be with a legendary performance across the tournament. His early penalty in the final gives his team the lead before Marco Materazzi equalizes. Once level, Italy starts to strangle the game and with 10 minutes to go in extra time, just as his team needs him most, he explodes. Zidane's headbutt on Materazzi has become the defining image of the 2006 World Cup, and perhaps his career. It is also one of the most bizarre moments in football history. Why ZZ could not keep his head will go down as one of the greatest unanswered football questions of all time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVL14JT7j9Y 7 - 2008: !e "runk #eferee! We're well used to questioning whether the referee needs glasses and their parentage, but have you ever wondered if the referee was drunk? In 2008, Sergei Shmolik refereed a Belarusian Premier League match between Vitebsk and Naftan. Voted the best referee in Belarus in 2007, Shmolik refereed the entire game from the centre circle before he was escorted from the pitch! Needless to say, a medical test after the match found high levels of alcohol in his system and he was eventually suspended by the Belarusian FA. How he even got to the pitch is anyone's guess, and then how he lasted 90 minutes in the centre circle will go down as one of the most baffling referee performances of all time. The frightening thing is that Shmolik might even have had the best game of his career, and never knew a thing about it! You must watch here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UCxVJgLFK0

In November 2009, Ireland were knocked out of the World Cup at the playoff stage by France. The win came courtesy of a William Gallas goal deep into injury time. However, during the buildup, Thierry Henry controlled the ball with his hand before passing to Gallas to score. The result caused outrage across the world with Ireland's governing body even going as far as to ask FIFA for a replay. Henry, the greatest player in Arsenal's history and one of the best players to ever grace the English Premier League, also came in for huge flak for his graceless behaviour during and after the match. Amidst the turmoil of the FAI looking for a replay and every single news source on the planet covering the story, FIFA in an amazingly baffling move decided to offer the FAI a Fair Play award to placate their protests. Needless to say the FAI turned them down before brandishing Sepp Blatter an "embarrassment." Of course listening to )a4e=s language lessons is one thing but its really not much use if you don=t at least attemt to ut some of it into ractice. So this week I=m going to ha4e a go at Fthe aragrahG in written form. -fter two losses our full s9uad of si7teen layers made it safely through the ?ridgewater Jerry to the freeHing and windy conditions that awaited us at the Royal Showgrounds. Si7teen layers may be a nightmare when trying to get an effecti4e layer interchange haening but its certainly encouraging that for the second week in succession all si7teen layers turned u ready for action so we want to thank the layers for that. -lso the fourteen who turned u at training last !hursday6 again in freeHing conditions ; that session set us u nicely for Saturday=s match. I was gi4ing instruction to the fi4e starting subs on the roles they=d assume when they entered the fray and almost missed Isaac ?eecroft slicing his way through the Glenorchy defense to sli their keeer but alas also the wrong side of the ost. I wondered if it was going to be one of those days but on the other hand I figured if we could car4e them u so easily more chances were sure to be forthcoming. So it ro4ed and in the first se4en minutes we scored twice courtesy of Iincent 8hancellor and I wondered if we were heading for an easy big win. Our oonents though ha4e been in4ol4ed in some high scoring games ; they score a lot and concede a lot ; so it should ha4e been no surrise when they egged us back to *5*. -fter that we scored6 they scored and both teams ket on scoring ; the ick of the goals being Iincent lundering his hat5trick when he got on the end of a brilliant run and cross from 8hristian SayersJ Isaac=s double including an unstoable double one5two with Iincent which was the erfect e7amle of short inter5assing layJ 8hristian=s fine run through the defense which he finished off with alombJ 8hristian=s header6 our first e4er headed goal as a youth teamJ and6 not to be outdone6 following a goal5kick from -rchie a Glenorchy layer caught the ball on the 4olley and sent it back from whence it came 0with interestAA2 ; and with fifteen minutes to go we led by D5,6 thinking that we had broken the backs of our oonents. It wasn=t finished though and they fought back to .5D with still se4en minutes left. Some deserate defending though saw out the remaining minutes. -s layers and coaches headed for the center circle I felt I should commiserate with the Glenorchy coach only to see her striding towards me with a beaming smile etched across her face and ronouncing that it was a great game and that it was a leasure for her team to lay against such a nice bunch of kids. &hat was interesting for me was that in our season and a half at youth le4el this has haened on more than one occasion with the niceness of our kids being commented on by an oosing coach or a referee. 8ertainly in our one and a half seasons we ha4e not icked u one solitary yellow card 0let alone a red2 and I=m roud of that as I=m sure is ?ig Rambling )a4e. Nice guys may often finish second but maybe @ust occasionally the nice guys can win. Once the congratulations and commiserations had been handed out and the three cheers and handshakes all round had been e7changed we trooed off feeling mightily leased with oursel4es not knowing that the best was yet to come. -t that moment the shrill blast of a foghorn announced the assing of a flotilla of hand built rafts6 coracles6 Iiking longboats6 steamshis6 and6 catamarans6 headed on u the )erwent in a realistic commemoration of !hor Heyerdahl=s eic circumna4igation of Hinchinbrook Island e7actly si7ty two years 0and *$+ days2 ago to the day. !he e7citement wasn=t o4er though as soon afterwards the fog cleared to re4eal a s9uadron of (ancaster ?ombers6 time and sace wared6 from "ebruary $/', tra4ersing the hea4ens lea4ing a lume of smoking blue fog in its wake. !his Saturday we=re at Huon4ille 4 New !own.
