Ya Whaaaat????

THE FOOTBALL RAMBLER for the hardcore enthusiasts
10 Most Baffling and Bizarre Moments in Soccer History
Continued from last week
6 - 2006: Zinedine Zidane Headbutts Marco Materazzi!
Picture the scene; Zinedine Zidane is his country's greatest, most experienced and important player. He
has just dragged his country to the World Cup 2006 final in Germany after his team had all but been
written off.
He has turned back the years and reminded everyone just how good he used to be with a legendary
performance across the tournament.
His early penalty in the final gives his team the lead before Marco Materazzi equalizes. Once level,
Italy starts to strangle the game and with 10 minutes to go in extra time, just as his team needs him
most, he explodes.
Zidane's headbutt on Materazzi has become the defining image of the 2006 World Cup, and perhaps his
career.
It is also one of the most bizarre moments in football history.
Why ZZ could not keep his head will go down as one of the greatest unanswered football questions of
all time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVL14JT7j9Y
7 - 2008: !e "runk #eferee!
We're well used to questioning whether the referee needs glasses and their parentage, but have you ever
wondered if the referee was drunk?
In 2008, Sergei Shmolik refereed a Belarusian Premier League match between Vitebsk and Naftan.
Voted the best referee in Belarus in 2007, Shmolik refereed the entire game from the centre circle
before he was escorted from the pitch!
Needless to say, a medical test after the match found high levels of alcohol in his system and he was
eventually suspended by the Belarusian FA.
How he even got to the pitch is anyone's guess, and then how he lasted 90 minutes in the centre circle
will go down as one of the most baffling referee performances of all time.
The frightening thing is that Shmolik might even have had the best game of his career, and never knew
a thing about it! You must watch here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UCxVJgLFK0

8 - 2008: $atford %s& #eadin': !e (!ost (oal!
We've all seen referee decisions that just can't be explained in any way shape or form.
Well, meet the daddy of them all!
In 2008, Reading and Watford were locked in a promotion battle to the Premiership when referee Stuart
Atwell made one of the most baffling decisions ever!
See it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9JCSa8nmBs#t=19 (go to
) - 200): *+*, -ffer t!e *,+ a *air .la/ ,ward ,fter !ierr/ Henr/ Handball!
In November 2009, Ireland were knocked out of the World Cup at the playoff stage by France. The win
came courtesy of a William Gallas goal deep into injury time. However, during the buildup, Thierry
Henry controlled the ball with his hand before passing to Gallas to score.
The result caused outrage across the world with Ireland's governing body even going as far as to ask
FIFA for a replay.
Henry, the greatest player in Arsenal's history and one of the best players to ever grace the English
Premier League, also came in for huge flak for his graceless behaviour during and after the match.
Amidst the turmoil of the FAI looking for a replay and every single news source on the planet covering
the story, FIFA in an amazingly baffling move decided to offer the FAI a Fair Play award to placate
their protests.
Needless to say the FAI turned them down before brandishing Sepp Blatter an "embarrassment."

00 - 2000: *a!ad 1!alfan and t!e $orst Miss of ,ll ime!
The Asian Games in 2010 saw Qatar U-23's and Uzbekistan's U-23's meet in the Round of 16.
With the game deadlocked at 0-0 after 90 minutes, it moved into extra time.
Fifty seconds into extra time and we were gifted with one of the best and most baffling blooper misses
of all time when Fahad Khalfan of Qatar missed an open goal.
Eight minutes later and the Uzbeks took the lead to win the game 1-0!

One of the many side benefits that comes with coaching alongside ?ig )a4e
the Rambler is the free tuition he hands out on :nglish linguistics in the written
form. Of course listening to )a4e=s language lessons is one thing but its really
not much use if you don=t at least attemt to ut some of it into ractice. So
this week I=m going to ha4e a go at Fthe aragrahG in written form. -fter two
losses our full s9uad of si7teen layers made it safely through the ?ridgewater
Jerry to the freeHing and windy conditions that awaited us at the Royal Showgrounds. Si7teen
layers may be a nightmare when trying to get an effecti4e layer interchange haening
but its certainly encouraging that for the second week in succession all si7teen layers turned
u ready for action so we want to thank the layers for that. -lso the fourteen who turned u
at training last !hursday6 again in freeHing conditions ; that session set us u nicely for
Saturday=s match. I was gi4ing instruction to the fi4e starting subs on the roles they=d assume
when they entered the fray and almost missed Isaac ?eecroft slicing his way through the
Glenorchy defense to sli their keeer but alas also the wrong side of the ost. I wondered if
it was going to be one of those days but on the other hand I figured if we could car4e them
u so easily more chances were sure to be forthcoming. So it ro4ed and in the first se4en
minutes we scored twice courtesy of Iincent 8hancellor and I wondered if we were heading
for an easy big win. Our oonents though ha4e been in4ol4ed in some high scoring games ;
they score a lot and concede a lot ; so it should ha4e been no surrise when they egged us
back to *5*. -fter that we scored6 they scored and both teams ket on scoring ; the ick of
the goals being Iincent lundering his hat5trick when he got on the end of a brilliant run and
cross from 8hristian SayersJ Isaac=s double including an unstoable double one5two with
Iincent which was the erfect e7amle of short inter5assing layJ 8hristian=s fine run through
the defense which he finished off with alombJ 8hristian=s header6 our first e4er headed goal
as a youth teamJ and6 not to be outdone6 following a goal5kick from -rchie a Glenorchy
layer caught the ball on the 4olley and sent it back from whence it came 0with interestAA2 ;
and with fifteen minutes to go we led by D5,6 thinking that we had broken the backs of our
oonents. It wasn=t finished though and they fought back to .5D with still se4en minutes left.
Some deserate defending though saw out the remaining minutes. -s layers and coaches
headed for the center circle I felt I should commiserate with the Glenorchy coach only to see
her striding towards me with a beaming smile etched across her face and ronouncing that it
was a great game and that it was a leasure for her team to lay against such a nice bunch
of kids. &hat was interesting for me was that in our season and a half at youth le4el this has
haened on more than one occasion with the niceness of our kids being commented on by
an oosing coach or a referee. 8ertainly in our one and a half seasons we ha4e not icked
u one solitary yellow card 0let alone a red2 and I=m roud of that as I=m sure is ?ig Rambling
)a4e. Nice guys may often finish second but maybe @ust occasionally the nice guys can win.
Once the congratulations and commiserations had been handed out and the three cheers
and handshakes all round had been e7changed we trooed off feeling mightily leased with
oursel4es not knowing that the best was yet to come. -t that moment the shrill blast of a
foghorn announced the assing of a flotilla of hand built rafts6 coracles6 Iiking longboats6

!he U3 Sea )ragons= imerious unbeaten run came to a halt on Saturday against a
determined 8al4in outfit. 8ygnet fielded an almost unchanged side from the team that beat
Huon Ialley .5% the re4ious week6 but it was a different story on the itch. 8al4in oened
the scoring and soon asserted their attacking rowess with a free flowing erformance
reminiscent of ?rendan RodgersL (i4erool team. !here are no easy games at this le4el6 and
8ygnet soon found themsel4es on the wrong side of a four goal deficit6 the 4isitors ghosting
ast the back four to dink the ball into the net. Se4eral times.
!he fight back began with :uan oening the scoring for the home team with a maHy run and
some clinical finishing to ut the ball in the back of the net. It wasn=t enough to stem the tide
and the 4isitors resonded with two more6 taking the game to 35$. Some dominant indi4idual
lay from Jamie resulted in another goal for the home team before the half time whistle with
the game delicately oised at 35*.
- tactical reshuffle and some citrus refreshment at half time looked like it had turned the tide
back in 8ygnet=s fa4our. :7cellent work in midfield from "lynn and Riley ut 8ygnet back in
the dri4ing seat. :uan was first to attack with an audacious lob6 only to be denied by the
woodwork. He soon atoned by duly desatching another howitHer in the back of the net to
make it 35+6 and the young maestro had his own la dcima for the season. !im maintained
the Sea )ragon tsunami with a great indi4idual effort to take it to 35'6 and it really was
beginning to look like a game of two hal4es.
It was not to be the Sea )ragons= day howe4er. 8al4in weathered the storm6 digging dee
to add to their tally with two late goals6 and a scoreline which flattered the 4isitors of D5'. -
thrilling game of end to end footballB the layers may ha4e been short on stature but
certainly not short on goals.

SaturdayLs game was an interesting one which 8ygnet should ha4e won based on the

con4ert that to any goals.

St !hereseLs were without their coach so we had a few issues 5 they tried to ha4e $% layers on
at the start of each half6 one child had no shin ads6 and two had them outside their socks.
Our ref ut them straight 0this was the same team that our ref stoed lay for last year when
they had a child laying with a cast on his arm6 so her reutation has been cemented...2.
8odi had a fairly 9uiet time in goals in the first half and )enHel in the second. !he ball sent
about .%1 of the time in our half6 but their goal defence was good and our shooting
accuracy was not so good. Ruite a few missed oortunities6 erhas too much thought
and not enough @ust booting it in.

&e had a full team of $* so + subs6 and we made good use of them to change around the
ositions6 trying to gi4e e4eryone some good time with the ball but also trying to strength out
defence and attack. &e changed our ositioning this week which meant our defence
worked in airs6 this worked well but robably needs a little more ractise.

-gain there were moments of brilliance and it is great to see the team work haening as
the communication le4el is lifted. !he score line didnLt reflect the 9uality of the game as
8ygnet were better at taking and keeing ossession of the ball6 running with the ball and
getting through the defenders.

!he team ha4e earned a week offJ in the ne7t round ILm sure they will all be eager to get out
and ut some more goals on the board and see some more wins come their way. Of the four

-fter our fantastic match with "riends the week before 0a thrilling , all draw2 I was warned
that South Hobart were a formidable team by the "riends coach. &e were going into the
game in good sirits after a mi7ed training session6 albeit still carrying a few in@uries and some
layers returning from illness.
&e set u almost identically as we had in the re4ious match6 we had managed such a
strong start against "riends that I really wanted and knew the team needed to start well and
set about South Hobart in a similar fashion6 if we were to get a result. Just as we had
re4iously6 we managed to get off to the flying start at home that I was hoing for and we
were soon attacking South Hobart6 whilst keeing it tight in defence. Our ositioning is really
coming together and we are becoming a tight little unit 0who are ro4ing to be a tough nut
to crack26 esecially when we are on a full siHe itch with only / layers..A -fter a great break
forward it seemed 9uite deser4ed that we went $ 5 % u when <ai made a great run and
finished well to gi4e us the lead. &e ket ressing and could ha4e scored more6 we were
keeing ossession of the ball and trying to get it down and use it through the middle and
out on the wings and as I kee saying at training Lif the other team doesn=t ha4e the ball then
we sto them from layingL. So it was a @ob well done that we led going into half time one
goal to the good.

!he second half was much like the first6 maybe a little longerN J%2 as I=m sure South Hobart=s

and a cool finish from <ieron to ut us safe at * 5 %. &e should ha4e scored more as the half
layed out6 but we are tiring at the end of matches from the effort we are utting in and
most imortantly for me as coach and the reason I asked a few layers to hel co4er
defence was finally breaking the habit of gifting soft goals at the end of the half as we had in
our re4ious games. Hamish ulled off a great sa4e near the end to deny South Hobart
scoring a consolation and I was hay that we had ket a clean sheet against one of the
suosedly better teams in our league as we safely saw the game out to win * 5 %.

In summary6 a great result that was totally deser4ed. !he effort the team uts in allied with
strong ositioning and suer fast breaks going forward is turning our season. "rom such a
oor start6 we ha4e managed to turn around our fortunes in only two weeks. !he whole team
has made that haen and if we can strengthen our communication and use of the ball in
the middle of the ark6 we should be set for a great season ahead. ?ut6 we mustn=t get

!he third game as the -ll Stars saw a 4ery e7cited bunch of girls arri4e early for a training
session before the game. !he game started and it soon became ob4ious that this was going
to be a tough match. !he wildcats 0&aimea Hts2 had a team full of girls in the uer age
grou who ha4e layed together for a coule of seasons and ushed the ball forward time
after time only to ha4e our back line clear the ball. >olly in goal had a few heart stoing
moments as a cleared ball assed slowly across an oen goal and end u as a goal kick.
!here were a coule of hits on the ost which rebounded outside of goal and not in. -ll the

- fair score for both sides.
Half time ga4e Ric a chance to drum into the girls the imortance of keeing ositions on the
field using a whiteboard to demonstrate.
!he second half started as the first but then the wheels fell off6 it was total confusion and
although there was a coule of attacks u front we conceeded three goals before the final
whistle.
I still count this as a good game as these girls are on a 4ery stee learning cur4e and u
against what can be called seasoned oonents. - bit more ractice and some shooting
skills and the return matches will be a lot closer in the ne7t round.
