GENOCIDE- Stalin, Nanking, Cambodia,
and of course the Holocaust
The Cambodian Genocide refers to the attempt of Khmer
Rouge party leader Pol Pot to nationalize and centralize
the peasant farming society of Cambodia virtually
overnight, in accordance with the Chinese Communist
agricultural model. This resulted in the gradual
devastation of over 25%
of the countrys population in
just three short years.

A) It was well organized and planned in
great detail
B) A new word is coined/created to
the horror of a killing an entire group of
people
C) The United Nations is created to stop
genocide
D) All of the Above
December 9, 1948 set the United
Nations definition of genocide
In the present Convention, genocide
means any of the following acts committed
with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a
national, ethnical, racial or religious group,
as such:
(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm
to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group
conditions of life calculated to bring about
its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to
prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the
group to another group
There are 8 stages to genocide. They are:
1. Classification
2. Symbolization
3. Dehumanization
4. Organization
5. Polarization
6. Preparation
7. Extermination
8. Denial
Distinguishing between us and
them
Usually based on race, religion,
ethnicity, or nationality
EXAMPLE: Germans and Jews,
The more divided a society is, the
more likely they will have
genocide.
Giving names or symbols to
the classification of ethnicity,
race, nationality, or religion.
Distinguishing people by
colors or types of dress.
Classification and symbolization do not
necessarily result in genocideonly when
combined with hatred and stage #3-
dehumanization.
When one group of people is
thought of as less than
human.
Often compared to animals,
insects, diseases, etc.
When people are thought of
as not-human, it is easier to
kill them.
Genocides are always
organizedusually by the
state.
Lots of plans, weapons,
trained people, etc.

Groups of people are
dividedlaws that reinforce
hate
Example: Laws against
intermarriage or socialization
amongst groups.
People are identified based
on their race, religion,
ethnicity, or nationality. They
are forced to symbols.
Death lists are made and
victims are separated from
the rest of society.
Mass killings begin.
Perpetrators try to hide
evidence of the
