The distance between the pump house and the administration building is 50 m and in between of these building is a recreational pond with water depth of 1.2 m. Water pipe used to transfer water from the pump house to the administration building cannot be visible to the visitors of the recreational pond and at the same time the pipe cannot be situated under the pond for easy maintenance. Take density and viscosity of water as 1000 kg/m 3 and 0.001 Ns/m 2 respectively. Recreational Pond Pump House AdrranistSicn Building Figure 1 arrangement of pump house, recreational pond and administration building a) As the responsible engineer for the project, sketch the propose water pipeline and state the pipe length and the type of pipe fitting together with its amount needed. (10 marks) b) From the proposed pipeline, calculate the total pressure lost due to friction of the pipe and its fittings. The radius of the pipe is determined to be r. I Ry T p AP Figure 2 show the liquid flow in a horizontal pipe a) State the force for every surface in the element ABCD and create the force balance for the element. (5 marks) b) Derive the formula for the maximum velocity in the pipe from the force balance in Question 2 (a). (10 marks) c) If the pressure drop per unit length in the pipe is 0.5 N/m 2 /m. Calculate the velocity of water at the wall of the pipe and at the center of the 100 mm internal diameter pipe. Take the fluid as water with density and viscosity as 1000 kg/m 3 and 0.001 Ns/m 2 . (5 marks) QUESTION 3 (P01.C02.C1) Mixing tank is use for mixing two or more components together in order to form a homogenous product. The effect of mixing also important in a reaction process where the collision of the element determines the reaction. Hak Cipta Universiti Teknologi MARA CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL 4 EH/JAN 2012/CHE503 a) Describe the importance of an impeller in the mixing tank and state three types of impeller available in industry. (4 marks) b) From the impeller mention in question 3 (a), draw the top view and the front view of the liquid flow pattern inside the mixing tank during its operation. (6 marks) c) Draw and label each of the components in a typical mixing tank. (5 marks) QUESTION 4 (P01, C02, C3) The selection of pump use in the process is depending on the characteristic of the fluid to be handle. The density, viscosity, pressure and corrosiveness of are some of the characteristics to take into the consideration in determining the most suitable pump. Diaphragm pump is considered as the most suitable pump to handle highly corrosive chemical dosage. a) Explain in detail the working mechanism of the diaphragm pump in operation. (6 marks) b) In a production of 18 molar hydrochloric acid, the acid need to be pump from the production line to the storage tank. Develop an analysis of pump capability for piston pump, diaphragm pump, peristaltic pump and centrifugal pump to determine the most suitable use for the pumping. (14 marks) QUESTION 5 (P01. C02, C3) a) Define the term "open channel flow". (4 marks) b) Water flows through the rectangular channel as shown in Figure 3 below. The channel is made of unfinished concrete and has a slope of 0.05 and Manning's coefficient 0.017. i) Determine the flow rate through the rectangular channel if the flow depth y = 1.0 meter. (6 marks) ii) If the channel is designed to produce 28 m 3 /s of water flow rate, determine the flow depth of y.
