Data of presentation

Migration is the movement of people from one region to another. It may be

permanent or temporary and can be classified as voluntary or involuntary
movement. There are push factors which influences people to migrate from their
country and pull factors in the country of destination. External migration is where
residence changes between a residential unit in the designation area and one
outside it, and internal migration is where residence changes from one residential
unit to another in the same designation area. Movement from one household to
another household within the same compound, home or homestead is internal
movement. It is not classified as internal migration and it is treated separately
from internal migration. A study was done in the community of Flankers t
determine the factors that influences migration from the community.
The data was collected by the use of questionnaires which were issued out to find
out the causes, effect and possible solution of migration of people from the
community of Flanker. It was calculated that 67% of the respondents are males
were and 33% were females. See table 1.1

In Flanker where unemployment is around 60%, many people have moved to
urbanized areas such as Montego Bay, in search of jobs. Every year, there are
thousand of people from the community who migrate to developed communities
because of the low standard of living, lack of social services and slow economic
growth rates which have promoted this outward movement.

The pie chart above shows the percentage of people who are unemployed in
flanker. Base on the analysis it can be concluded most of the people who live in
flanker community are unemployed. The unemployment rate can be defined as
the number of people actively looking for a job divided by the labour force.
Changes in unemployment depend mostly on inflows made up of non-employed
people starting to look for jobs, of employed people who lose their jobs and look
for new ones and of people who stop looking for employment.
However in flanker, there are many areas that are lack of proper infrastructure
such as road development, buildings and houses. There is also lack of social
services such as educational and technical institutions. In areas like these, there is

lack of job opportunities, and little or no agricultural activities take here. These

the community of Flanker. It was recorded that 41.7% of respondents said
violence, which almost double the response to lack of job opportunities, but had a
slight increase of 8% of those who have chosen poor infrastructures. Violence
influences many people to move from Flanker because of the violent activities
that are taking place here. Residents have made many complaints about the
prolonged period of gun killing which causes many people to be living in fear and

factorse that influences residents to leave the community
to become afraid of the road whenever it gets dark. Bullies, gangs, weapons, and
substance abuse all contribute to the fear experienced by many of today's
students; violence in the communities cannot be overlooked. Notwithstanding
the sometimes unfounded and overgeneralized fear and apprehension about
violence among children and adults, often fueled by the media, violence in
Flanker is a legitimate concern for everyone.
33% of the respondents stated that poor infrastructure is the second highest
cause of migration from the community .Roads, houses and buildings such as
schools, and clinics are poorly developed. This causes people to leave the
community to migrate to other such as housing schemes and other residential
areas to improve their surroundings. Another factor which causes person to leave
the community with 25% of respondents is lack of job opportunities. Most people
prefer to work outside of the community because there are better wages, and
also more job opportunities.
Table 2 Table below is showing solution to the cause of migration of people from
Flanker.
solutions percentage
Provide more electricity 0%
Make the community attractive 8.4%
Provide more working opportunities 58.3%
others 33.3%

The table above shows some possible solutions which can reduce the number of
people migrating from flanker. 8.4% of the respondents said the authorities make
the community more attractive, 33.3% choose other options while the percentage
of respondents who had chosen, provide more working opportunities was
outstanding, with an average of 58.3% of respondents. A large number of persons
are unemployed because of the lack of job opportunities in the community,
resulting in a large number of people to migrate from the community and to
relocate in the cities where there are more job opportunities.
Therefore to provide more working opportunities as selected by the respondents
are the main solution to the problem. Another solution is making the community
more attractive would stop many people migrating from the community because
the community will be more organized, and be more peaceful and appreciated by
the people.
Finally, people may also be influenced to move from the area due to the crime
and violence activities which takes place here. Residents are complaining about
the prolong shooting whenever it becomes dark, causing most persons to become
afraid of the road because drive by shooting is prone to in areas like these. As a
result, this causes the area to become a gust town.

Impacts which migration has on the community
the community has a negative impact on the community as the are fewer working
opportunities that are required, decrease in the number of person to socialize
with and a decline in the number of taxi transportation that will be available on
the road.
The impact of rural to urban migration can lead to overpopulation, lack of job
opportunities, shanty towns over crowded buses, traffic congestion, over
crowded schools, hospital or even pollution in other areas. Also the members of
parliament need to make strong action and proper plan in this regard. Therefore
better employment, better services and better business opportunities are the
driving forces for migration in flanker. When government attention shifts to
developing rural areas through creating better job opportunities and providing
better service and facilities, the migration will not only stop, it will reverse
