their top 3, there's nowhere to go but up for the rec corps and
keep an eye on Robinson TY.
OFFENSIVE LINE - In '12 the Gators went from having 1
ret st'r (45 car sts) to 4 (79 car sts) and had PS#1, #3, #5 and
#8 ret. As expected, the Gators improved from 143 (4.0) ypg
rush to 188 (4.5) despite all'g 39 sks (13.5%, #122). LY they
had to replace a 3rd Tm SEC LT (3Y st'r), their LG and RT Chaz
Green who was OFY in Aug. The unit went from 4 ret st'rs to
two and was then hit hard by inj's with LT DJ Humphries OFY
after 6 sts. They had 3 diff st'rs each at LT, LG and RT with only
C Jonotthan Harrison starting all 12. TY they lose C Harrison
(12 st, 3Y st'r), RG Jon Halapio (10 st, 4Y st'r, #6DC NE) and
Kyle Koehne (6 st). This unit is loaded with VHT's and they get
Green & Humphries back. LY's injury-plagued and less exp'd
OL went from 188 (4.5) to 146 (3.6) rush ypg. This year they
gure to be stronger and more stable (66 car sts).
DEFENSIVE LINE - In '12 UF had to replace a 3rd Tm
SEC DT (#4DC) and a bkp. The proj starting 4 featured PS#3,
#6, #8 and #17 which didn't even include PS#7JC Damien Jacobs
plus PS#2 and PS#10 true frosh. DE Ronald Powell (PS#1) did,
however, tear his ACL. I called them one of the top DL's and they
lived up to that billing all'g just 95 ypg rush (#4 FBS, 3.0, 30 sk).
LY they lost a 3rd Tm AA DT (#1DC), a NT and a DE so they had
1 ret st'r but they did get Powell back. DT Dominique Easley was
dominant early before being OFY Wk 3. The numbers dropped
greatly to 142 ypg (4.3, 19 sk) but if you take out the FCS gm vs
GS (option), they all'd 116.4 ypg (3.8). TY they lose Easley (3 st,
5 tkl, #1DC NE), Powell (8 st, #10 tkl'r, 4 sk, 3 t, #5DC NO) &
Jacobs (4 st, 24 tkl). However, Dante Fowler and Jonathan Bullard
will be one of the SEC's top DE combos. With basically 3 st'rs back
and better health, this unit will have stats similar to '12.
LINEBACKERS - In '12 the Gators had the top 6 LB's back.
I called them one of the nation's top LB units and they trimmed
their ppg all'd to 14.5 despite Jelani Jenkins (PS#2) missing 5.
LY they had to replace a 2nd Tm SEC LB (#3 tkl'r, #2 DC) and
Jenkins (8 st, #4DC). The bkps were young (5 frosh 3-deep)
including PS#4, PS#8 & PS#25 true frosh. Antonio Morrison
(4 st '12, PS#29) was susp'd the rst 2 and then OFY the L/3.
Bkp rFr Jeremi Powell (PS#38) tore his ACL in gm 7. With the
inj's, UF's outstanding defense of the rst 6 (13 ppg) weakened
to 29.2 ppg the last 6. TY they lose LB Darrin Kitchens (3 st, 22
tkl). The majority of the unit is back incl their #1 tkl'r, Michael
Taylor (PS#31). The group is loaded with VHT's and similar to
the DL, will resemble more of the '12 version.
DEFENSIVE BACKS - In '11 the Gators had to replace
all 4 st'rs (2 1st Tm SEC). After being #5, #7 and #11 in my PDR
('09-'11), they dropped to #42 (55%, 15-8). In '12 I said it was
shades of '08 (#72 to #5) as they went from 0 ret st'rs to 6 that
had 8+ sts in '11 while adding PS#7 and PS#18 true frosh. I
said it could be the most improved secondary and the Gators
were just that, moving up to #1 (193 ypg, 52%, 7-20)! LY they
had to replace a 1st Tm AA SS (#2 tkl'r, #1DC), their FS (#1
tkl'r, #6DC) and NB (7 st, 18 tkl). They had 1 of the nation's best
CB combos in Loucheiz Purifoy and Marcus Roberson (both
missed time). UF slipped a little to #12 (49.8%, 9-10). TY 2nd
Tm SEC Purifoy (7 st, 24 tkl, 2 int, 7 pbu) and Roberson (4 st,
11 tkl, 3 pbu) left early for the NFL while also gone are S Jaylen
Watkins (9 st, #3 tkl'r, 7 pbu, #4DC PHI) and Cody Riggs (12
st, #4 tkl'r). Vernon Hargreaves (PS#1) who st'd the L/10 was
the rst true frosh to wear #1 s/Keiwan Ratliff in 2000. Despite
the losses this remains a top-notch unit.
SPECIAL TEAMS - Prior to LY, the Gators had recorded
four straight top 10 ST nishes. However, in '13 the bottom started
to fall out in Aug as star KR Andre Debose was OFY (ACL). In
'12 P Kyle Christy (PS#3) avg 45.8 (40.5 tm net!) and earned

POSITION OUTLOOK FOR 2014
QUARTERBACKS - In '11 all 3 QB's (John Brantley, Jeff
Driskel, Jacoby Brissett) were banged up and comb'd to avg
just 186 ypg (57%, 13-13). In '12 the battle between Driskel and
Brissett lasted into the opener (alternated in 1H) before Driskel
took over. He had a UF QB record 177 rush vs Vandy (Tim Tebow
166 '07, Ole Miss). Driskel threw for 1,646 (64%, 12-5, #2 rush
w/413). LY Brissett transferred while Driskel missed some of Aug
(appendix). Driskel threw 2 costly int's vs Miami before being OFY
vs Tenn (477, 68.9%, 2-3). Many analysts foolishly thought the
Gators would be better off w/Tyler Murphy who did do well his
rst 2 sts (31-40-396-4-1). Murphy sprained his shld'r vs LSU
and then struggled in his nal 3 sts (4 TO vs Vandy). He missed
the nal 3 (1216, 60.5%, 6-5). RFr Skyler Mornhinweg (PS#38)
st'd the nal 3 (344, 69.8%, 3-1) but the playbook became very
conservative. Murphy transferred leaving the Gators w/just 2
schlp QB's but they do bring in true frosh Will Grier (PS#3) who
was IFS as well as Treon Harris (PS#9) this fall. Adding depth is
Chris Wilkes (6'4" 230 rFr, PS#80) who spent 5Y playing baseball.
With Driskel now healthy, I look for improved numbers from the
Gator QB's, no matter who starts.
RUNNING BACKS - In '11 the top 3 backs rushed for
1,758 (5.4). In '12 the new OC wanted more running between the
tkl and Mike Gillislee (201 lbs) was the rst 1,000 yd rusher here
s/'04 (Ciatrick Fason). FB Hunter Joyer's strong blocking was a
huge factor. True frosh Matt Jones (PS#17) nished #3 (275, 5.3)
and QB/RB/WR Trey Burton had 190 (6.6). LY they lost Gillislee
(#5DC) but added in true frosh Kelvin Taylor (PS#5). Jones was
the clear cut #1 but got a viral infection in Aug (lost 10 lbs) and
missed the opener. He put up 176 (6.3) vs UK but he was OFY
vs LSU (#3, 339, 4.3). Mack Brown (PS#8) had 112 in the opener
but failed to crack 100 again (#1, 543, 3.7). Taylor ran for 462 of
his 508 (4.6) in the nal 7. They moved S Valdez Showers (5'11"
190 Jr, PS#37) to RB/slot (103, 8.6). TY all 4 return along with rFr
Adam Lane (5'7" 222, PS#36) and FB Gideon Ajagbe (6'2" 244 Sr,
PS#44LB, 2 st LY). If Jones can come back 100%, the Gators will
be deeper and more exp'd at RB than they've been in yrs.
RECEIVERS - In '12 UF ret'd their #1 Andre Debose (432,
27.0) and #3 TE Jordan Reed (307, 11.0). Reed led with 559
(12.4) but Debose only played in 9 (3 rec, doghouse). Quinton
Dunbar was #2 with 383 (10.6). LY they lost Reed (#3DC) and
Debose tore his ACL in Aug. The TE's were one of the biggest
? and after 6 gms LB Neiron Ball had more rec yds (14 on a
fake punt) than any TE. Solomon Patton nished #1 w/556
(12.6). Quinton Dunbar, (rec in schl-record 28 str gm) was #2
w/548 (13.7). The Gators "utility" ply'r Trey Burton nished #3
(445, 11.7). Demarcus Robinson (PS#12) was susp'd twice.
TY Patton (8 st) and Burton (7 st) depart but Debose returns.
Seven of the top 8 are VHT's and they also add in Virginia trans
Jake McGee to help bolster the TE depth (3 st, 43 rec LY, UF
TE position had just 3 ttl rec in '13). Even with the loss of 2 of

Everything went the Gators' way in the magical '06 National Title
ssn with many close and fortuitous wins. They narrowly got to
the title gm but then dominated Ohio St all'g just 82 yds. In '07
UF was the SEC favorite (#6 AP). I was beat up pretty good by
Gator fans as I had UF tied for 3rd in the SEC East and #14
(lower than any other source on stassen.com). UF nished just
9-4 and #13. In '08 Georgia was ranked #1 AP but I called for
the Gators to win the National Title. UF was a stronger team than
their '06 version ('06 avg win 30-14 - '08 44-13). I was clearly
a Gator fan in the BCS Title gm when they beat Okla 24-14. In
'09 they opened #1 but lost in the SEC Title gm to Bama and
nished "just" #3. In Meyer's last season they opened #4 but
nished 8-5 (NR). In '11 I pegged UF 3rd in the East (now I was
accused of being a Gator Hater) and that is where they nished.
They were just 3-5 in SEC play and needed a bowl win over
Ohio St to nish 7-6. In '12 UF was #23 (picked 3rd in East) but
I had them #10 and atop the SEC East. UF needed SEVEN 2H
comebacks but was #3 in the BCS poll and just a ND loss away
from playing in the Nat'l Title gm. After an embarrassing loss to
UL in the Sugar Bowl, they fell to #9. LY UF came in at #10 in the
AP Poll and once again I had them lower than everyone else at
#18. UF would have nished much stronger had it not been for
a devastating spate of inj's. The D all'd just 235.3 ypg over the
rst 6 but after inj's and a sporadic offense, they all'd 393.2 ypg
the last 6. In Wk 2 they outgained Miami 413-212 but were -4 in
TO's and lost. They were still 4-1 and #17 when for the 2nd str
time they traveled to LSU they had a bkp QB and lost 17-6. The
D shockingly gave up 500 yds to MO in a 36-17 road loss. They
trailed UGA 23-3 at half and came up 3 pts short. Tyler Murphy
had 4 TO's (VU td drives of 10, 22, 4 yds) and UF had a 22 gm
win streak vs VU snapped (UF 344-183 yd edge). QB Mornhinweg
got his rst snaps all year (Murphy inj'd) and UF led SC on the
road in the 4Q before SC took the lead w/6:43 left. GA Sthrn
brought its option into The Swamp and came out with a 26-20
upset (rst ever loss to FCS). They only trailed FSt 3-0 mid-2Q
but lost 37-7 nishing 4-8. It was their rst losing season s/'79
and rst non-bowl s/'90. Naturally all of my key indicators are
pointing up and the Gators are an easy pick for my Most Improved
List. They are +5.0 in the Stock Market Indicator, had 4 net close
losses LY and -4 net upsets. They also have 14 ret st'rs and can
only remain healthier. UF does draw both LSU and Bama out of
the West but it should be a bounce back year.

1st Tm SEC honors (Ray Guy nalist). However,
LY he shockingly lost his job (39.6) to true frosh
Johnnny Townsend (PS#13). 1st Tm SEC K Caleb
Sturgis (schl rec 67 car fg's) departed (#5DC). New
K Austin Hardin struggled (4-12, L33) and they
turned to Brad Phillips vs Ark (2-2, L28). Francisco
Velez then hit 6-8 (L44). While the K gm struggled,
the return units did well (Solomon Patton, 642, 29.2
KR). UF has had a KR or PR td an amazing 9 str
yrs! After a poor #66 nish, they brought in new
ST's cch Coleman Hutzler from NM (#24 LY) and
I expect a solid move up.
COACHES - Will Muschamp had big shoes to ll replacing 2-time
Nat'l Champ HC Urban Meyer. Muschamp was also the DC and
HC-in-waiting at Texas ('08-'10) and the DC at Auburn ('06-'07) and
LSU ('02-'04). Kurt Roper takes over as OC after holding the same
job at Duke the L6Y. Roper was also the RB cch at Tenn ('06-'07) as
well as Eli Manning's QB cch at Ole Miss ('98-'04). DJ Durkin is in
his 2nd ssn as DC after cch'g LB's and ST here the L3Y.
