Tree beautiful, nihilistic go-go dancers travel across the Mojave Desert wreaking havoc and terrorizing everyone they encounter. Te flms imagery is as memorable as its heroines are pissed of and hedonistic. Almost certainly Meyers greatest flm, it delivers an explosive blend of salacious trash and snappy visual style. An easy contender for the greatest exploitation flm of all time. WILD GALS OF THE NAKED WEST (1962, 35mm) Tis movie reaches so far beyond other contemporaneous nudie cuties that its arms must be 12 feet long. Russ Meyers truly incredible early triumphs are the astonishing result of mixing Jacques Tati style clowning, movie-going Americas prurient in- terest in nudie movies, the iconography of classic Westerns, and boldly colorful minimalism in a swirling hot tub of inspiration. Peerless pop perfection. UP! (1976, 35mm) Hitler-esque renegade-ex-Nazi-in-hiding Adolf Schwartz is mur- dered in his Northern Californian castle when someone drops a frenzied piranha into his bathtub while hes in it, but the flm quickly turns its attention away from the resulting whodunit and instead tracks the sexploits of Margo Winchester (Raven de la Croix), who is new to town and quickly involves herself with pretty much every local man. A murder mystery la Meyer. Tis flm is completely insane. MUDHONEY (1965, 35mm) Horny hillbillies and ornery old cusses try to lay their greasy hands on gorgeous country cousin Lorna Maitland in Russ Meyers epic of ribaldry and violence made from the juice of life. Tis bawdy barnyard pastiche would turn Lil Abner creator Al Capp green with envy. Steinbeck with sex! Tobacco Road XXX! Featuring beautiful b&w photography, this is simply one of the best-looking movies of its kind that youll ever see. BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (1970, 35mm) Te members of all-girl rock band the Kelly Afair get roped into a web of intrigues after arriving in Los Angeles and quickly as- cending to local stardom following an impromptu concert at the mansion of pop producer and snake oil salesman Z-Man. Not an actual sequel to VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, this is a delirious standalone detonation of Hollywood mayhem. A truly legendary masterpiece written by Roger Ebert. An actor-director match made in Hollywood heaven: Josef von Sternberg found the perfect muse for his sumptuous experiments in lighting and mise-en-scne in the glamorous Marlene Dietrich. Teir seven flms together constitute one of the most dazzling runs of creativity in the history of the movies (Dave Kehr). SHANGHAI EXPRESS (1932, 35mm) Tis tale of revolutionary China is one of the most beautifully photographed flms ever made, and the ultimate example of how Hollywood could enhance a stars natural beauty through its expertise in the aesthetics of shadow. A beautiful temptress re-kindles an old romance while trying to escape her past during a tension-packed train journey. Dietrich never looked more ravishing, and Sternberg remains true to his uniquely dazzling and unapologetic romanticism. DISHONORED (1931, 35mm) Sternbergs tale of sexual sacrifce, disguised as an espionage melodrama, opens in 1915, when strange fgures emerge from the dust of the falling Austrian empire. Marlene Dietrich is the prostitute who reinvents herself as the glamorous, Mata Hari-like spy X-27, using her intoxicating yet elusive charms and a few well-chosen propslipstick, a pair of stockings, a piano, and a pussycatto steal hearts and state secrets for her country, only to be done in by her infatuation with an agent from Austrias most hated rival, Mother Russia. THE SCARLET EMPRESS (1934, 35mm) Filmmaker-svengali von Sternberg escalates his obsession with screen legend Marlene Dietrich in this lavish depiction of sex and deceit in the eighteenth-century Russian court. A self-pro- claimed relentless excursion into style, the pairs sixth collab- oration follows the exploits of Princess Sophia as she evolves from trembling innocent to cunning sexual libertine Catherine the Great. With operatic melodrama, famboyant visuals, and a cast of thousands, this ornate spectacle represents the apex of cinematic pageantry by Hollywoods master of artifce. THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN (1935, 35mm) Dietrich and von Sternberg headed to Spain for their fnal collaboration, in which she plays Concha Perez, a beautiful seductress whose fckle ways drive rival suitors to extremes. Sternbergs coldly formalist approach lends the melodramatic proceedings a cruel, ironic edge as passions and tempers boil over in an abstract world of glittering surfaces. THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN is essentially of a translation of the Sternberg/ Dietrich relationship into visual poetry and metaphor. Dietrich steadfastly maintained that it was her favorite of the flms they made together. THE WILD ANGELS (1966, 35mm) Peter Fonda stars as brooding Angels chieftain Heavenly Blues. When his pal Loser (Bruce Dern) is shot by police, Blues attempts to bury him in a small town, but the locals resist, and a brawl ensues. Audiences and critics were alternately appalled and thrilled by the extensive drug use and violence, but beneath ANGELS leathery hide beats the heart of a Western, especially in its ruminations on personal freedom. SINNERS BLOOD (1969, 35mm) SINNERS BLOOD couldnt care less about exposition, plot, or tact. In lieu, the flm is obsessed with cultivating as much quaint, late-60s sleaze as possible. Boobs. Asses. Incest. Priest-gore. Whatevers handy. Teres no strategy here just a bunch of random sleaze swathed over a backdrop of dusty, small-town America. Te gut-ripping truth about a girl named Penny and kill-for-kicks cycle gang who in one single, shocking day, set the whole town ablaze with terror! RUSS MEYER DIETRICH/STERNBERG RUSS MEYER SHE-DEVILS ON WHEELS (1968, 35mm) Te Man-Eaters, an all-girl motorcycle gang, spend their time terrorizing a local community, race each other for frst pick of their male groupie stud line, and throw raucous orgies in their clubhouse. Gonzo sex and violence courtesy of director H.G. Lews. Shot in 2 weeks for $50,000 and using a cast of mostly real life biker chicks, this flm has a poetry all its own. RUN, ANGEL, RUN! (1969, 16mm) He squealed on his gang and the word was out... WASTE HIM! Angel (big William Smith) quits the Devils Advocates motorcy- cle gang after selling a biker-expose story to a national magazine. He settles on a California sheep ranch with his girlfriend, but four of his sadistic ex-riding buddies show up seeking vengeance. HELLS ANGELS FOREVER (1983, 35mm) Te only movie actually MADE BY the Hells Angels--they started in 1972 and didnt fnish it till eleven years later--this documentary is the drive-in GANDHI. - Joe Bob Briggs THE LOSERS (1970, 35mm) Whats even more violent and brutal than an American biker gang high on cheap gas, cheaper grass and truckstop pharmaceu- ticals, burning a trail of rubber and mayhem along the highways and byways of America? How about an American biker gang in Vietnam with a license to kill and specially outftted lethal war hogs? Tats the hook here and were happy to report its as good as it sounds. Tis movie is like a 30 gallon drum full of concen- trated violence set on fre and rolling downhill right at you! THE WEREWOLF (1961 / 1993, 16mm / VHS) Welcome to the fringes of anti-logic. Shot guerilla-style by Hol- lywood outsider Coleman Francis, THE BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS is a what happens when Luis Buuel loses a bet with Edward D. Wood, Jr. in Tor Johnsons kitchen. Tirty years lat- er, Chicagos David Te Rock Nelson unleashed his frst full length movie on video cassette -- CONRAD BROOKS VS. THE WEREWOLF. Starring Ed Wood right-hand-man Con- rad Brooks (who appears in BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS), this movie is a cascade of no-f madness, an extension of Coleman Franciss unhinged ambition. Experiencing this double feature will be unlike anything else in the universe. FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER (1984, 35mm) SPECIAL PRE-FRIDAY THE 13th CELEBRATION AND THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY SCREENING! Tis is by far the darkest, meanest and most hump-hating chapter in the career of Jason Vorhees. Join us as Crispin Glover, 12-year-old Corey Feld- man and LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN star Lawrence Monoson face of against Crystal Lakes population controller! SLITHIS (1978, 35mm) When the toxicity of Los Angeles reaches alarming new heights, SLITHIS!! -- a radioactive beastie who resembles a decayed water- melon -- prowls the waterfronts of Venice Beach. If CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON was updated by hoboes on a quaalude binge, it might feel something like this movie. DONT PANIC (1988, 35mm) No Mexican gore-war scores quite like this. Tis English-lan- guage Freddy Krueger rip-of follows familiar formulas, yet somehow manages to run completely of the rails of human logic. Maybe its because the 30-year-old teenage protagonist spends half the flm running around in jammies with cartoon dinosaurs on them? THE JUNKMAN (1982, 16mm) If burning rubber and twisted metal put a spring in your step, then THE JUNKMAN is going to fy you to the moon. Just check Te Guinness Book of World Records where from 1982 to 2003 THE JUNKMAN held the record for most vehicles destroyed in a single motion picture. Tis is one of the great, largely unheralded car chase movies, and were proud to present it on 16mm with its original soundtrack. ENEMY TERRITORY (1987, 35mm) A bunch of Vampires chase a ghost around an apartment building, but this is no horror movie. In fact, theres nothing su- pernatural about it. Te Vampires are a tough, black gang who control the central building of a massive housing project, and ghost is the pet name for the white insurance agent who has become their prey. Taking inspiration from THE WARRIORS and ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, this is a single location, all-in-one-night action thriller that delivers on suspense, laughs, and maximum fun. A HARD DAY FOR ARCHIE (1974, 35mm) Tings never got this steamy in Riverdale. And the publishers of Archie Comics were intent to keep it that way. Tis sex comedy spoof of Archie Comics went through a few title changes thanks to legal challenges, but its still about a high-schooler named Ar- chie, his love interest Betty, and his good buddy Mughead (well, OK, some character names are slightly modifed). A picture postcard of New York in the 70s and the clever, dirty comedies of a bygone era. GRIZZLY (1976, 35mm) An indestructible, two-story-tall grizzly bear has realized that human beef beats the hell out of nuts and berries, and its up to Ranger Mike and his hotheaded gunman Don to bring the carnivorous menace to its hairy knees. But when a couple dozen drunk-ass hunters enter the forest on a suicide mission to nail the beast, count on a tidal wave of pine-scented bloodshed. Teres no disputing GRIZZLY is the third most upsetting PG movie ever made! AGFA REEL ONE PARTY Watch the opening reel (frst 20 minutes) of four diferent mysterious flm prints and then vote on which one to watch through to the end! Tough Guy Cinema: BAD BOYS II (2003, 35mm) IF you can fnd a more exciting screening than this, you are probably signed up to be set on fre before being thrown out of a plane and diving into a pool full of cocaine. And by all means, if you are doing that we understand if you miss this, but if youre excuse is ANYTHING ELSE...you are a fool. We ride together, we die together. Bad boys for life. Marx Bros: THE BIG STORE (1941, 35mm) Groucho Marx plays two-bit detective Wolf J. Flywheel, hired by department-store owner Martha Phelps (Margaret Dumont) to investigate mismanagement. Despite his monumental inepti- tude, Flywheel manages to do his job with the help of his mute assistant, Wacky (Harpo ), and a music-teacher pal, Ravelli (Chico). Written, produced, and directed by Hollywood fringe player Jack Vacek, ROCK HOUSE is a middle-aged dads fantasy come to life. Includes cocaine, casual sex, and bad guys who wear rubber monster masks. Cinema Cocktails: DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS (1988, 35mm) Beaumont sur Mer is a tranquil little town along the French Mediterranean coast where Michael Caines con man Lawrence preys on the kindness of women to aford himself quite the elaborate lifestyle.
