Dear Friends in Christ,
Suzanne and I send our greetings to you once again from the warm and sunny Dominican
Republic.
There is lots of news to report in this newsletter and we are very encouraged by the way the
Lord's hand is moving in this part of the country. We expect great things to continue to happen in
this ministry in the next few years.
New Truck Purchased and Van Stolen!
We were able to purchase a new 2006
Mitsubishi truck for the mission work in
October. Friends and supporting churches,
many of whom had ridden in the back of the
old Chevy truck, responded to the need for a
new truck, and we were able to pay cash for
the truck. Thank you. It is a real work truck
and has already been put to good use hauling
materials for projects and people for church!
We had 29 people in the back last Sunday
evening and it rode very smoothly!
We're using both the new truck and the
old truck that the church now has to help
transport people home after church. The church
van was stolen in November. Victor was at a
PTA meeting at school and the van was stolen
off the street, in broad daylight! To make the
story more interesting, the van was spotted
in Santo Domingo a couple of weeks ago, still
with the same license plate and church name
on the side! The police are investigating,
we hope, and perhaps the church will get it
back. Transportation is difficult and becoming
increasingly dangerous at night, so providing
safe transportation for the church has become a
necessity.
Extreme Home Makeover
If you have seen the TV program about
home makeovers, you will understand all of the
work involved in redoing a home. We hosted
a team from the Northeast Christian Church
in Louisville that built a new home from the
floor up for one of the families in the church in
La Romana. Amable Rodriguez and his three
daughters, Paula, Nairobi, and Raquel, were
in desperate need of a new home. The one
they had been living in for years was made
completely of tin roofing and was in pretty
bad shape. The team sent funds ahead and we
were able to get the footing and floor poured
before they got here in November. They laid
the block and got the roof on in just one week!
Lots of effort and prayers went into the project
and we were able to later plaster and get all
of the electricity and plumbing installed and
they now have a lovely two-bedroom home and
indoor plumbing for the first time in their lives!
Thanks Northeast!
Planning for the Future in La Romana
Guiding a new church work to self-
sufficiency is one of the very delicate and
difficult parts of being a missionary. Funding
is still needed for the new work in La Romana,
which is less than 4 years old, but when we
met with the Board of Directors from EDCM
in September, we began to plan for the church
to reach that goal in a few years. The board
was great in helping us set in motion a plan to
reduce US funds for La Romana and set goals
for growth and stewardship for the La Romana
church to reach by 2011. The leadership team
has discussed this and agreed that it's a very
healthy goal for the church to aim for.

Do You Speak English?
One of the exciting outreaches that the
church in La Romana is using is English as
a Second Language. Gregory Stevens and
Yudermy Cabrera oversee this ministry.
Gregory has developed a teaching style that is
very popular and, since starting the classes at
the church, over 200 people are taking classes
each week. They also offer the Bible Study
network on Monday evenings to students and
about 80 are attending with several church
members doing the teaching. It's a blessing to
see so many interested in studying the Word.
1
The English classes also provide very positive
promotion for the church in the neighborhood!

Punta Cana News
There is so much news regarding this new
church plant that it's hard to know what to
choose to share. We don't want to overwhelm
you with information, but let's just say that
the Lord is moving in many different ways to
see that this church gets started. Here are the
highlights:
The First Christian Church in
Tarpon Springs, FL, has become
the sponsoring congregation for this
project and we thank them for their
vision and support!
Franklin and Ilonka Toribio, along
with their son, Christopher, are
planning to move to the Punta Cana
area, hopefully by July 2007.
The Toribio Family
We have started a Wednesday Bible
study in one of the neighborhoods
and we spend each Wednesday
exploring and getting to know the
We have made connections at a
local clinic run by a non-profit
organization that would welcome
medical and dental teams.
We have made contact with one
of the local primary schools that
needs and welcomes help from any
church group interested in helping a
public school with very basic school
supplies.
Every week we make more and
more contacts and find people that
are really interested in what we
are doing. This is a relatively new
area, less than 30 years old, so most
people that live there are not from
there. That means that they are
more open to change and more open
to the gospel message.
Because of the tremendous growth in
the area, land prices are sky rocketing and
a good price is $100 US per square meter.
An acre has 4400 square meters so an acre
would cost $440,000!! We have found a
housing development called Pueblo Bavaro
that will sell us a piece of land that is 2756
square meters at $47.50 US per meter, less
than half the going price. We're praying very
hard that the Lord will provide for this need
and would ask that you pray and also help
however you can. The total price is around
$131,000 and we're sure, if it's the Lord's
will, the funds will be made available. The
owners will sell it and finance at this price if
we can make a substantial down payment of
about $70,000 US.

Family News
It's hard to believe that our daughter
Emily and her husband Ryan are getting
ready to celebrate their first anniversary on
March 4! How time flies! They are living and
working in Medford, Oregon, and enjoying
life in the Northwest United States. We'll see
where the Lord and job markets lead them in
the future!
Laurie got a new job in the city
government in New York City in November.
She works for the Small Business Services
Administration and has learned a lot in her
first few months on the job. She is thinking
about starting graduate school in the next
year or so and we'll see where that leads her.
Suzanne and I continue to do well. I've
been watching my weight and have lost
about 25 pounds, which in turn lowered my
cholesterol levels way down! Suzanne has
been bothered by a bone spur on her left heel,
but it is responding to treatment. Other than
that, we're in pretty good shape!
We'll need all of our energy for this year's
work. The calendar is filled with activities,
conferences, and work teams coming from the
US churches that support the work here, so
we'll be on the go a lot of the time!
As always, thanks for your prayers for
us and for the work here. Please continue to
lift up the church in La Romana and the new
church plant in Punta Cana. We do appreciate
your help and your support!

Subject: Property Purchase in Punta Cana
Dear Friends in Christ,
Suzanne and I wrote on January 26'-'^ asking you to be praying for the
Lord's guidance concerning the property in the Punta Cana area for a new
church. We strongly feei the Lord leading us to launch out in faith and commit to
buying the property we mentioned in our last e-maii. Available property in a
good area is hard to find and the prices we have seen in other areas are double
the asking price of $47.50 per square meter that the developers of the Pueblo
Bavaro are asking for this church lot.
We need to raise $70,000 of the $130,000 asking price. The developer
indicated that they might be willing to reduce the price even further with some
Dominican-style haggling, which we are more than willing to do! The Pueblo
Bavaro housing development will have almost 600 homes and over 200
apartment buildings when it is ail finished! The building lot they have designated
for a church in the first phase will be right in the middle of that phase, next to a
new High School being built right now, the only one in Punta Cana, and right
next to an area of over 2 acres that is designated for a community park. The
location is ideal, the people are moving there and we have an opportunitv to be
on the "around floor" of this booming area!
We need your help with this project. We are asking you to prayerfully
consider a significant financial gift toward the purchase of this property. We are
writing our supporting churches today also and know that they will help, but this
is a BIG project that will take the help of a lot of our friends and supporters. We
know that some can give very generously and others are definitely more limited
in their ability to give.
Please do 3 things for us as soon as you can:
1. Pray that the Lord will lead In this fund-raising process. We're
completely confident that God will provide for this need.
2/6/2007
Christopher powell, 03:00 PM 1/27/2005-0600, RE: HORIZONS Page 2 of 2
2. Give as generously as you can. Any funds can be sent to:
Eastern Dominican Christian Mission
Rt. 2 Box 266
Clinton, IL 61727
Please be sure to indicate that your offerinc is for the Punta Cana property.
Please let us know if you are able to help.
3. Talk with your church's missions committee or the "powers that be"
about helping with this project.
We started Bible Studies two weeks ago in Punta Cana and have a group of
people that our friend Beth Clouse has gotten together in her
neighborhood. There are a lot of people looking and searching in that area
so we're excited about that. Also, we met again with Franklin and Ilonka
Toribio, a dynamic young couple from Esperanza, who are definitely
committed to coming to minister in Punta Cana. They will hopefully be here
by the middle of the summer.
$130,000 is a lot of money but, as a I read a while back, "if money is the
issue then it's not an issue." What the author of the article was saying is
that if money is the only issue stopping a project that is God's will, then It's
not an issue. We truly believe that God's hand is in this project and we're
trusting that we are in His will in leading forth with this fund raising
project. Please give as generously as you can. Thank you for your prayers
and offerings! Please feel free to contact us via e-maii or by phone at
809/550-9695(home) or 809/458-6840(celi) if you have any questions or
suggestions.
In Christ,

Subject: Greetings from La Romana
Attachments: image001.jpg
Dear Friends- Summer greetings fromthe hot andhumid Dominican Republic. Wejust said"goodbye"to a
great workteamfrom Erie Christian Church inErie, BL. There were22 onthe teamandtheywereherefor 10
days so we are pretty wornout this weekend but getting recovered! Theywereableto get a lot of projects done.
We rented scaffolding to clean andpaint at the church building, jobs that are impossible withoutthe scaffolding.
The teamalso brought a spotlight systemfor the stage so we are super hightech now. The youthgroup is
hoping to inaugurate the lights tonight in youth group-should be a lot of fiml
The church also planned a three night special servicededicated to the theme of"SexualPurity". We had
excellent attendance- two ofthe three nightswe had over 100young people in attendance. We had Dominican
psychologists, social workers, doctors and Terry Green, YouthMinister fromErie leadingthe sessions. Teen
pregnancy is at epidemiclevels here in La Romana and we're really seeinga need for educationabout
abstinencefor our young people in the community. The team stayed in Dominican homes and what a great time
they hadcommunicating and livingwiththe families in the church. Therewere tears on both sides as they said
their goodbyes yesterday afternoon! Teny does an especially good job in preparing his teams and we are always
glad to have them.
One ofthe typical attributes ofthe Dominicanculture is the way families care for their elderly parents or
sick relatives. That was illustrated very clearly in the church this past month. Isabel Morales was the sister of
one ofthe church members in La Romana. Twenty-one years ago she went to the hospital for a routine surgery
but never recovered from the anesthesia. She had been in a coma, unable to speak or move for all those years.
Angela's sister, Margot, moved into Isabel's home and took care of her, along with help from the rest ofthe
family, every day for 21 years. They fed her, bathed her, and turned her every three hours, for 21 years. She
never had a bed sore in all those years! Isabel died a couple ofweeks ago and the hundreds of people that came
for the visitation and funeral all expressed their admiration for the devoted love of her family.
Andrew Butz is here for the summer from Cincinnati Christian University, where he will graduate this
coming year. We are talking seriously with him about returning to head up a camp program in the eastern
sectionofthe country. The campin Salcedo, that we started in 1994, is just too far awayfor the churches in this
area to use with any regularity. We are looking for land in the hills north ofLa Romana and would ask that you
pray about those plans.
Franklin and Ilonka Toribio will be moving over to Punta Cana by July 1, Lord willing. We will be
finalizing housing arrangementsfor this week and are prayingfor a good home in a safe area at an affordable
price- not too muchto ask fromthe Lord- He has control over all things! We're excitedfor themto get here and
pray the Lord will bless their ministry. One ofthe first things we'll do with them is sit down an establish some
time lines and goal for the next few months. Often we get overwhelmed when we think of a new project and we
have found that breaking down the first year or two into three month levels helps in establishing goals and not
try and do everything the first month they are here. We're continuing to look for land and have seen two good
properties the past three weeks and we're sure the Lord will show us the right place at the right time.
We have two more teams this summer, one in July and one in August. Both are coming from the New
Hope ChristianChurch in Roanoke, VAand will be their first teams in the country.
WE have a web site under construction!! I! vvvvvv.easterndominican.com is the web address and although
it is not finished yet you can still access it and see what's there!
Our e-mail has changed to n^ork@codetel.net.do so please change that inyour computer from the old
Verizon account. We look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for your prayers and support!

The church in La Romana was blessed
on Sunday, June 25th, when 8 new believers
were immersed into Christ. It was, as you
can imagine, a joyous occasion. Several of
the people baptized were the direct result of
the English as a Second Language classes
that were started in the church this past
year. The students have English classes on
Tuesdays and Thursdays and also have the
Bible Study Network classes on Mondays!
The church just had a graduation concert
with the church full. A new Bible study
group starts July 9, Lord willing. Yudermy
Cabrera, Victor's wife, is heading up the
English program and Gregory Stephens is
the main teacher.
Mothers' Day Photos!
Mother's Day is the last Sunday in May in Latin
America and is second only to Christmas! This year the
church did a photo outreach project where we offered free
family photos with Mom after church on May 27th. Even
though Rick is not a professional photographer by any
means, his new digital camera takes pretty good pictures.
We were also able to use frames that were brought by the
Erie Christian Church work team and so each Mom got a
beautiful, framed picture of her and her family. For many
of the ladies in the church, it is the first family picture
they have ever had!
^^exua^urityWor^^
One of the real critical social problems in the
Dominican Republic is teen pregnancy. La Romana
has one of the highest percentages of teen pregnancies
related problems in the country. The church wants to
present a Biblical viewpoint on sexual purity so a three-
day workshop was prepared and presented in June.
Attendance was very good, with over 100 on two of the
three evenings. Doctors, social workers and psychologists
participated along with Terry Green, Youth Minister
from Erie, IL, as we dealt with the physical, social
and spiritual ramifications of teen sexuality and the
real need for purity. Each one of the teens signed a
commitment card and received a white purity bracelet
to serve as a reminder of their promise to God to remain
pure. This is just another example of the church trying to
impact the community that we live in.
Summer Work
Teams from the
United States!!
Three work teams are planned
for this summer. Erie Christian
Church from Erie, IL, came at the
end of May for 10 days. They stayed
in Dominican homes and worked
on a variety of projects. There were
lots of tears as they prepared to go
back to Erie, and the folks in La
Romana really enjoyed their visit.
The team spent several days on
scaffolding cleaning and painting
the church. They also brought and
installed 8 spotlights for the church
stage. The spotlights will get their
first big workout at the Bible Study
Network Celebration on June 30
with a concert and dramas. The
lights can be coordinated with the
music to change according to the
beat of the songs, so it should be a
real show!
We have a youth team coming
in July and an adult team coming
in August from New Hope Chris
tian Church in Roanoke, VA. These
are their first trips to the Domini
can Republic. The youth team will
be leading a 3-day camp with the
youth from La Romana and two,
two-day VBS outreaches in the
community. The adult group will be
helping reconstruct a playground at
a special needs school here in town
we work with and also working on
the school building that belongs to
one of the church members in La
Romana. Please pray for the teams
and for energy levels for all the
Dominicans working with them. It's
very hot and humid right now so
that saps the teams' strength pretty
quickly, and they really have to
pace themselves as they work.
Franklin and llonka in Punta Cana!!!
but we met recently with the owner, who is
ten minutes, which has to be a record here!
Please pray earnestly for Franklin and llonka and their two children, Christopher(7) and
Alondra(4 months) as they move a long way from home and begin this missionary journey. We're
eager to see how the Lord opens doors for this new ministry.
Summer Intern Learning the Ropes!!
We have enjoyed having Andrew Butz
from Cincinnati Christian University here
this summer. Andrew came in January with
a team from CCU and felt the Lord leading to
return this summer and see where the Lord is
leading in his life. Andrew has a very strong
interest in an area that we feel very strongly
about, getting a church camp/conference
center started in the eastern section of the
country. The camp that many of you know
about in Salcedo is about 6 hours from the
eastern section of the country and is really
difficult and costly for the churches east of
Santo Domingo to use. Andrew has a lifelong
history of working in church camps and is
really feeling lead to possibly come and lead in
this prospective ministry. Pray for him as he
returns to CCU for his last year of college and
especially pray for guidance from the Lord.

You can access it now and keep up-to-date with what is happening here!

No one can predict the future. That being
said, the Bible is clear that planning for the
future is wise and so as we examine the next
few years, we have begun to make tentative
plans for the work in the Eastern Dominican
Republic. We are planning to retire from
full-time mission work in September of 2013.
That sounds like a long way away but it is
approaching very quickly. We have established
a few goals that we want to share with you as
we begin planning for this transition:
We hope to have another American
family join us by September 2010 to begin
assuming our role as lead missionaries in
the mission work.
We will have the churches in La Romana,
Punta Cana, and the eastern section of
Santo Domingo organized and functioning
with national leadership by 2010, with new
church plants planned for 2 other cities in
the east.
We will have a camp/conference center
project underway, with property purchased
and construction started by 2011.
We will spend part of 2013 visiting
churches and transitioning support from
us to the mission team in place by then.
Our hope is that our retirement will be
a smooth transition from our leadership to
those that will take our place and lead the
mission on to bigger and greater dreams in the
future. We will continue to own our apartment
here so we will be here part of the year after
we retire, especially in the winters. We're
seriously considering volunteering to serve as
interim missionaries for other missionaries
on furlough that would need someone to take
their place for a few months. We're praying
for guidance and we're excited to see how the
Lord will open doors in the years to come.
Suzanne and Rick celebrated their 33rd
anniversary on May 25th! We've also been
celebrating birthdays with Laurie(25) on
April 4, Suzanne on June 16 and Ryan, our
son-in-law on June 24th. Emily and Rick
celebrate their birthdays on July 3rd. Emily
will be 28 and Rick will somewhat older
than that! Emily and Ryan are job searching
and have interviews or possibilities from
Seattle to New York and maybe overseas.
Laurie is working for a non-profit job
training and placement organization in
New York City and enjoying it. She's also
joined the local Garden club in her section of
Manhattan.

Subject: Exciting News FromThe Dominican Repubiic
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Greetings once again from the eastern part of the Dominican Republic. The Lord
is moving in the new church plant in Punta Cana! We were able to locate and begin
the purchase of property for that new workjust last week. The property cost $2.5
million pesos- which is right about $75,000 dollars but is in a developing
neighborhood, about a block from the local High School, and surrounded by people!
We made a $48,000 dollar down payment last Tuesday and have four months to
complete the purchase. We should be receiving the preliminary plans from our
architect this afternoon and we're really excited to see what she has developed. The
property will have three main buildings:
1. Asanctuary that will seat at least 300 people, complete with a balcony and
air conditioning. Since the electricity in Punta Cana is very stable, we can plan
for air conditioning
2. A multi-purpose building that can be used for community outreach programs
the church develops in the years to come.
3. A parsonage for the Francisco family.
One of the bonuses of this property is that there is already a small building that
has 3 one-room apartments, each with its own bathroom, so we can use that to
help house work teams that come to work on the project!
We would ask you to join us in thanking the Lord for leading us to this property.
We also would ask you to contact your church or small group to consider helping
with the remaining $27,000 to complete the purchase. Also, we are beginning to
schedule work teams from our supporting churches and interested groups to
come in 2008 and 2009 to get this project as far along as possible. We'll have a
better idea cost estimates in the next few days. Our first concern, of course, is
paying off the remaining $27,000 by the end of February. We are confident that
the Lord will provide for this need.
Thanks for your prayers and your help!
Anyfunds can be sent to;

Be sure and indicate that the offering is for the Punta Cana project.
Thanks again!

Special Offering For Punta Cana Project
Dear Friends in Christ,
We are so excited to report the progress of the Punta Cana church plant!
After a lot of prayer and searching, the Lord opened the right doors at the right time
and we were able to make a down payment on property for the new church plant. The
property is surrounded by homes and about one block from the local high school. We
are planning the following construction projects:
Aworship center that will seat at least 300 people, complete with
air conditioning (the electricity in Punta Cana is stable, so we can
plan for air conditioning).
A 3-story multi-purpose building that will be used for Bible
classes, ministry outreach programs such as a Day-care center,
medical and dental offices, an Internet library for students, etc.
A parsonage for the church planters. Franklin and lionka
Francisco and their family.
The property cost $76,000 dollars and we were able to make a down payment
of $48,000 so we still owe $28,000 and that must be paid by the end of
February 2008.
Plans are being prepared right now for the first two phases of the project which
will be the multi-purpose building and the parsonage. We are also purchasing a large
tent that can be used for worship services until we get the worship center done.
We're confident that the Lord will help provide the funds needed and we would
simply ask you for your help in one of four ways:
1. Give a special generous gift to help finish paying for this property
2. Make a commitment to give a significant gift in 2008 for the con
struction projects.
3. Organize a work team to come and work on the projects. We
