VARABLE & CON8TANT AR VOLUME UNT8
The V.A.V. concept offers considerable advantages over
conventional systems as illustrated below :
Reduced system energy consumption cost.
Reduced set-up and installation cost.
Greater flexibility in respect to varying loades which are
easier zoned resulting in occupancy controlled comfort.
Closer air volume control due to self correcting facility
for adverse conditions in upstream system pressure.
Multi-tenanted or disciplined buildings can be dictated
and controlled by the occupant.

Description
Extended Box Units
ControI
Caryaire VAV Boxes type KS are air volume control terminal
units for use in single duct installations.
KSboxes consist of a cabinet constructed of galvanised steel-
sheet with interior thermal-acoustical insulation of fibreglass,
with neoprene film. They have two connections, one circular
or oval at the inlet and another rectangular connection at the
discharge side.
The volume control damper, with its elliptical shape and
sealing gasket in its entire periphery, and installed in the
circular inlet, is the most adequate to obtain maximum
linearity in damper actuation and a reduced sound level.
n the inlet duct a cross-shaped probe is installed which
measures the differential pressure which varies with the air
volume entering unit.
The KS unit is used to provide a variable air volume to the
room to be conditioned, as a function of the variations of its
heat loads.
f it is desired to control the exhaust air from a room as a
function of its supply air so as to obtain an over or under
pressure with respect to adjacent rooms, the KSR units
should be installed.
The only difference between KSR and KS units is that in the
first the air enters the unit from the opposite side which obliges
the position of the differential pressure sensor to be modified.
CARYARE units KSL & KSL-R is KS/KS-R units with
extension of the insulation part behind the damper to improve
its acoustical characteristics. Therefore, all information
pertaining to KS/KS-R units is common except the length of
the unit.
Air volume control is electronic as standard The KS control
system consists of:
1. Differential pressure sensor
2. Temperature sensor (not included with unit).
3. Controller which receive the signals from the
temperature probe and di fferenti al pressure
sensor
4. Actuator, which closes or opens the KSdamper 5
according to the signal received from the controller
Nowadays, controller and actuator are usually constructed as
a single compact, unit, which fulfils both functions.
n the controller maximum and minimum required air flow
rates are selected, which will be controlled by the controller as
a function of the of the signal received from the differential
pressure sensor.
Between these limits the controller will vary the air flow rate
according to the signal received from the temperature sensor.
Type KS
Type KS-R
Dimensions
KS units are usuaIIy instaIIed in the faIse ceiIings of the rooms to be conditioned. In their design this fact has been
taken into account, resuIting in a minimum height. To faciIitate the mounting of the units their Iength was aIso
considered important and is therefore kept at 610 mm for aII sizes.
Damper Leakage:
The sealing gasket, mounted on the periphery of the damper, guarantees an air leakage level through the damper less than
1% of the nominal air flowrate (defined as the flowrate corresponding to a velocity in the inlet duct of 7.5 m/s) and at a pressure
of up to 1000 Pa.

Description
ControI
The CARYARE KMSR boxes are bypass terminal units that
are used in single-duct, low-speed installations where a flow
rate control damper cannot or should not be used in the fan.
The KMSR receives constant air flow rate, supplies a part of
this air to the room to be conditioned and diverts the rest to the
return. As a result, the equipment acts as a constant flowrate
unit, but the room to be conditioned receives bypass air as
needed.
A typical application consists of using the KMSR with
standalone equipment where, for equipment economics and
to avoid frost in the evaporator, a reduction in the air flow rate
is not advisable.
Air volume control consists of the following components:
1. Bypass damper
2. Proportional actuator (24 v)
3. Ambient thermostat, proportional action
4. Manual damper
Note : The discharge outlet for return (4) has a manual
damper to balance the pressure loss from both circuits: one
for discharge to the room and one for air return.

Extended Box Unit
ControI
CARYARE boxes type KSV are mechanically actuated
terminal units for use in constant volume single duct
installations.
KSV boxes consist of a cabinet constructed of galvanised
steel-sheet with interior thermal-acoustical insulation of
fibreglass, with neoprene film. They have two connections,
one circular or oval at the inlet and another rectangular at the
discharge side.
The KSV unit is used as an expansion box in high speed
installations and its automatic control system maintains the
desired air flow rate for each room, independent of pressure
variations, which might occur at the inlet.
The KSV-R units fulfil the same function as the KSV, but
installed in the exhaust /return duct.
CARYARE unit KSVL/KSVL-R is a KSV/KSV-R unit with an
extention of the insulation part behind the damper to improve
its accoustical characteristics. Therefore, all information
corresponding to KSV units is common except the length of
the unit.

The KSVcontrol system consists of:
1. Damper
2. Rod
3. Spring
4. Regulating screw
The mechanical automatic control system works without
external energy. The pressure at the inlet of the box exercises
a force on the specially designed damper blade. This force on
the damper axis, together with a number of elements (rod,
damper, spring and screw) connected to the axis make the
damper blade modify its position so as to maintain the air flow
rate constant at the factory set value, independent of the box
inlet pressure.

will be maintained within + 5% and + 10% of its calibrated

Duct connection discharge side
The rectangular discharge can be connected to the duct as
shown in the figure. n this way the exterior height of the
duct is less than that of the KS and even permits exterior
duct insulation without superseeding the height of the
terminal unit.
InstaIIation conditions
n order to obtain a correct reading with the differential
pressure probe a minimum uniform air distribution at the
inlet of the KSunit is required.
For this reason the minimum distances indicated in the
figures are recommended, both for a KS box close to a
0
T-piece as well as close to a 90 elbow.
