About RockNet
RockNet is a real-time, low latency audi o distribution network tailored to tour and install ed sound ap-
plications.
RockNet provides a uni versal sol ution to almost any imaginable audio distri bution challenge and be-
haves very much like a traditional anal og acti ve split system. It conveys 160 channels of 24bit/48kHz
audi o based on CAT.5 interconnections.
RockNet products are designed for heavy duty road use. Their ruggedized steel enclosures resemble
the look and feel of a modular stagebox.
The net work consists of various 19/1RU I/O devices and a particular interface card for Yamaha host
products which make those Yamaha products part of the RockNet audi o net work.
There is no particular order of I/O devices required within a RockNet audio network. Any device can
be placed at any location.
Any input signal is anywhere avail able i n the RockNet audio network.
The 160 channels are inputs into the network from either RN.301.MI microphone preamp/line input,,
RN.333. DI AES/EBU inputs or the input section of the RN.341.MY Yamaha interface cards.
The number of outputs is i n practical terms unlimited although limited to 768. This offers the opport u-
nity to do as many splits as required in real world applications.
All connectors (except power, wordclock BNC and GPIO) are entirely gold-plated
The circuit design is streamlined to ultra low noise and minimum distortion to meet the highest de-
mands in audio quality.

Auto-addressing
RockNet 300 works auto-addressing.
As soon as the devices are powered-up and the Network Sections are connected via CAT.5 (from Link
Output to Li nk Input of the neighbour device) the connected devices start communicating with each
other. The communication is based on internal uni que device addresses that are similar to MAC ad-
dresses. By using t hese i nternal addresses the devices of a network l earn what devices the network
consist of.
The front panel has a display named DEVICE ID. The setting of the device ID on the front of the de-
vice has no technical meaning. The net work works with no device ID assigned or with several (or all)
devices havi ng the same device ID. The DEVICE ID display is used to visually identify the devices of a
RockNet audio network.
Furthermore this ID is used by the included onli ne remote control software RockWorks to identify indi-
vidual devices on the screen.
The auto addressing functionality allows extremely flexibl e net work build-up and extension in combina-
tion with the ri ng redundancy and the fact that there is no particular order of device types to buil d a
RockNet audio network.

Network Interface and Transmission Protocol
RockNet is NOT based on Ethernet even though it uses CAT.5 cabl es.
The RockNet transport protocol is proprietary and regul ar Ethernet products can NOT be impl ement ed
in a RockNet audi o net work.
No particular IT or comput er networking know-how is needed to setup and operate RockNet.
The RockNet RN.300 Net work Interface incorporates two Medi a Numerics propri etary core technol o-
gies in order to enable RockNet to carry 160 channels of 24bit/48kHz audio over a si ngle CAT.5 cable
in a redundant ring topology:
- LATERAL
Ultra low latency asynchronous data transmission enables RockNet to support various redundant
network topol ogi es and to provi de real -time, isochronous data transport in conj unction with pack-
etized data such as TCP/ IP. The data rate is 400 Mps on CAT5 cabl e and the number of nodes is
infinit e, though limited to 99 for practical reason.
- CONCRETE
Clock recovery and jitter rejection utilizes a unique digital PLL structure. Jitter magnitude, spectrum
and probability distribution are de-randomized by a sophisticated di gital modulation scheme, result-
ing in an extremely high jitter rej ection and zero jitter build-up through the net work.
All devices can be confi gured intuiti vely by front panel push buttons.
A system check can be performed withi n a few seconds per each device even without using a com-
puter.

Build-in Redundancy
RockNet incorporat es a streamline redundancy concept on device and network level.
Network Redundancy
The net work interface of each device features two Ethercon RJ45 interconnections for fail -save
transmission of audi o signals on CAT.5 infrastructure. Two network connectors are used to li nk to a
neighbour device in a redundant ring topol ogy. They can also be used to provide a parallel link in case
of point to poi nt applications.
Based on the redundant ring topology, RockNet forms a self-healing network i n case of connection
failures between two devices.
The 160 channels travel clockwise and counter clockwise simultaneously through the ri ng.
A connection fail ure bet ween two devices does not affect the audio transmission or system integrity.
The ri ng is self-healing for single connection failures and offers signi ficant advantages in performance,
consistency and flexi bility.
RockNet automatically detects a failure described above and reconfigures the net work li nks to handle
this probl em without affecting the remaini ng audi o net work.
The net work redundancy mechanism (in conjunction with the aut o addressing feature) also offers the
opportunity to open the ring of an acti ve audi o network (e.g. during a running show) and easily link a
new RockNet device into the ri ng without interrupting the audio signal.

Power Supply and Thermal Management
RockNet devices feat ure redundant switch-mode power suppli es suitabl e for worl d-wide operation.
The power supplies are modular and therefore easy to repl ace in case of fail ure.
The replacement of power supplies is done by Media Numerics Ltd. or one of its authorized distribu-
tors or dealers and may under no circumstances be done by the user.
Two locking IEC connectors on the back panel of the device are standard.
Built in silent runni ng fans add to the component reli ability and enable ultimat e rack space efficiency.

1 Power Supply A IEC connect via l ocking IEC connector of provi ded power supply cord
2 Power Supply B IEC connect via l ocking IEC connector of provi ded power supply cord
3 Wordclock IN BNC connect via BNC for external sync of RN.300 device (Sync Master
only)
4 Wordclock OUT BNC connect via BNC for synchronizing external equipment to RN.300
5 GP I/O DB9 for future use, currently no functionality
6 Fan permanent silent running fan if device is connected to mai ns
power

Easy Installation
RockNet is an integrated system that does not requi re any third party products.
Only two types of cables are necessary to hook up a network:
microphone cables with XLR (male/ femal e) and
CAT.5 net work cables with RJ45 (Ethercon)
RockNet devices do not requi re breakout panels or any special cables and connectors.
Up to 99 devices can easily be added to a single network.
All configuration i nformation is stored in the device, e. g. Quad assignment, channel parameters, chan-
nel and device labels (vi a RockWorks), sync settings, etc.

Decentralized Audio Network
RockNet is a genui ne audio net work plat form, designed purposely for li ve sound applicati ons and op-
timized for audi o contri bution and distribution.
RockNet provides a virtual distribut ed audio matrix with a capacity of:
768 inputs
768 outputs
160 transport channels over CAT.5

In multipl e stage setups the hi gh amount of i nputs can be used to build an audio network that covers
all stages with only one FOH console and multiple monitor mixing consoles.
The Snapshot functionality of the i ncluded online remot e cont rol software RockWorks (pl ease see t he
RockWorks Operating Manual) all ows to partially acti vate a net work that carries 160 audi o channels
while having up to 768 inputs.
This functionality can also be used in any application where more than 160 i nputs are required i n total
but not more than 160 inputs are acti ve at the same time.

The high amount of outputs can be used for large dri ve systems and to distribute audi o to several
destinations within one infrastructure. It offers an almost unlimited number of splits in practical terms.

The Network Section provi des the Link Input and Link Out put Ethercon connectors for the CAT.5
network infrastructure.
The Link Input is marked in grey and the Li nk Output is marked i n yellow on all RN.300 devices.
In order to buil d an audi o net work the Link Output needs to be connected to the Li nk Input of the
neighbour device and so forth until the CAT.5 cable forms a ri ng and connects the last Li nk Output of
a neighbour device to the Link Input of the start device.
Two Remote Power status LEDs for the Input and Output respecti vely indicate the availability of Re-
mote Power. The LEDs are permanently green if the remot e power option is build int o the respecti ve
device.
This option is mandat ory for the use of the RN.362. IR Inli ne Repeater which extends the length of a
CAT.5 link to max. 450m (1,500ft).
The RN.362.IR is a future Media Numerics product which is not descri bed i n this manual.

Channel Parameter Copy

The channel mode provides the opportunity to copy the value of a singl e channel parameter from one
channel to another (or to several channels) of the same device.

Push the channel select button (SEL) of the designated channel (e.g. most left-hand channel [1]). Ad-
just the designated parameter to the desired value (e.g. MUTE on) by using t he respecti ve button un-
derneath the MUTE display.
Afterwards push and hol d both buttons underneath the MUTE display [2 & 3] until the displ ay fl ashes
while still holdi ng the SEL button [1].

As soon as the displ ay starts flashi ng the SEL button [1] can be released while still hol ding the t wo
buttons of the MUTE display [2 & 3].

Now the value (MUTE O OO On nn n) can be copied to any other channel of the device by simply pushi ng t he
SEL button ([4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10]) of the channel the paramet er shall be copi ed to. At each push
of a SEL button the MUTE displ ay will show the two horizontal bars (-- -- -- --) to indicate the successful
copy of the value.
After the copy is finished release all buttons.

The copy function works for all channel parameters:
- MUTE,
- GAIN,
- PHANTOM,
- CLIP LEVEL
Only one parameter can be copied at a time.

RN.300 Initial Power-up
This chapter describes the appearance and indications shown after powering an un-confi gured device
or net work.
Connect to Mains
For safety reasons RockNet devices are NOT equipped with mains switches. Aft er connecting at least
one power inlet to mains the device will start operating. RockNet is equipped with 2 (t wo) independent
(= redundant) power suppli es and indi vidual l ocking IEC connectors. These cables will protect the
indi vi dual power cords from accidental removal. Only use these power cables to operate the device.
For unlocking and disconnecting push the yellow button on top of the connector.
Before connecting to mains check the power cord and connectors for damage. Dont use the power
cord if the isolation or one of the connectors is damaged or shows blank met al wires.
USING DAMAGED POWER CORDS CAN ENDANGER YOUR LIFE!

Network Wiring
Firmware Check
Before wiring the network by connecting the Link Output of the fi rst RockNet RN.300 device with the
Link Input of the neighbour device vi a CAT.5 cabl e check the firmware version of each device that
shall be part of the net work.
IMPORTANT: The firmware version of each device in the network needs to be the identical.
Check the firmware version either by powering each device up and carefully watch the firmware ver-
sion displayed after the sel f test or by using RockFlash.
RockFlash is part of RockWorks and enabl es easy firmware updates of each device via a PC/Lapt op
connected with USB. Please see the RockWorks manual for further details of how to use RockFlash.
If you do firmware updates pl ease the remote HA-cable of RN.341.MY int erface cards needs to be
removed fi rst. In case you are goi ng to updat e any of the 19 RockNet devices please do not push any
buttons of the front panel facilities during the update process.
The Yamaha host product needs to be re-started after the RN.341.MY interface card has been up-
dated.
Double-click on the RockFlash icon on the desktop of your PC/Laptop and connect the USB cable to
the RockNet device.
In case this is the fi rst time you connect a RockNet device to your PC/Laptop MS-Windows will ask
you to install the correct USB dri ver. Please simply follow the instructions provi ded in the MS Windows
installation assistant.
The USB dri ver i nstallation process needs to be repeated for any of your USB connectors of your
PC/Lapt op. This is a MS-Windows characteristic.
The following window will fi nally appear:

The displ ayed Current Firmware Version needs to be identical for all RockNet devices in the net work.
If t his is not the case please update the respecti ve devices by clicking the updat e Firmware button in
the wi ndow shown above. Otherwise the net work will not be operational since the device communica-
tion cannot be established.

Link Indicators
RockNet uses propri etary technol ogies to transport 160 channels of 24bit/48kHz audi o over a single
CAT.5 cable. Each RockNet RN.300 device is equi pped with a link i nput (grey) and a li nk out put (yel-
low) Neutrik Ethercon connector. After connecting all devices of the audio net work with each other
by connecting LINK OUT of one device with LINK IN of the nei ghbour device a so called redundant
ring network has been formed.
A successfully established link is indicated by flashing LED link indicators.

Recommended Cables
It is strongly recommended to use network cables fulfilli ng the CAT.5 STP or hi gher CAT speci fications
in conjunction with the use of Neut rik Ethercon connectors.
Standard RJ45 connectors may be used for test setups. In t his case the RJ45 rel ease l ever is used to
disconnect the RJ45 connector.
RockNet requires the following audio network CAT cabli ng:
CAT.5 or better
STP cabl e (in case of CAT.5 or CAT.6)
Max distance between units 150m or 500ft
Max cable attenuation 19dB @ 100MHz (100m)
Do NOT use LOW SKEW cables!
UTP cable may be used but the use is not recommended

Network Configuration
Synchronization
Like any digital network RockNet needs a defined clocking source. Each RockNet device is able to:
generate the system clock itself
- no speci fic external clock or synchronization unit is needed
- RN. 300 device takes its internal oscillator as the internal clock source
use an external clocking source
- either connect a wordclock input to the respecti ve device or
- use one of the AES/EBU inputs as sync source (RN.331.DD and RN.333. DI)
Only one Pri mary and one Secondary Sync Master are all owed in a RockNet audi o net work.
Missing synchronization of the audio network is indicated by flashi ng Li nk LEDs in the status indication
section on the front panel of the devices.
As soon as the network is synchronized the Link LEDs are permanent (yellow).
Use the Options Menu to set the Pri mary and/or Secondary Sync Master of the network. Each Sync
Master type can only be configured on di fferent dedicated devices.
In a newly build network it is not possibl e to configure two different devices as being the Primary or
Secondary Sync Master. In case t wo (or more) al ready as Primary or Secondary Master configured
devices are li nked to a network the Li nk LEDs of all devices will be flashing and the number of Primary
Master settings needs to be reduced t o maximum one single Primary and one single Secondary Sync
Master in the net work. Devices configured to be Primary Master are indicat ed by a permanent master
LED on the front panel. Usually the Secondary Master shows a fl ashing master LED on the front
panel.
In case of a Synch Master switch-over which is always accompanied by a short audio i nterruption
(net work is muted in order not to gi ve out any noise due to temporary synch loss) the Secondary
Synch Master shows a permanent master LED.
If the Primary Synch Master comes back into the network the synchronization will not switch back to
the Primary Master in order to avoid a loss of audio (short interruption) and t he master LED on t he
front panel of the Primary Synch Master fl ashes.
Pushing t he two buttons underneath the l eft -hand and the right-hand displ ay simultaneously gi ves
access to the Options Menu.
The Opti ons Menu will be displayed temporary for approximately three seconds.
The fi rst option displ ayed is the Sync Master setting.

The description of the net work synchronizati on on the following pages assumes that the Primary Sync
Master is set before the Secondary Sync Master is confi gured. If this sequence of events is reversed,
i.e. the Secondary Sync Master is set before the Primary Sync Master the following changes occur:
- as soon as the SM is configured the Li nk LEDs stop flashi ng and are permanent
- after configuring the PM the Master LED of the PM will be flashi ng

Channel Routing Definitions

RockNet carries 160 channels of 24bit/48kHz audio on a singl e CAT.5 cable bidi rectional in the re-
dundant ring topology.
In order to enable the user to rout e the channels in the network from the front panel of the RockNet
devices the I/O routing is done in blocks of 4 (four) consecuti ve channels. The channels that belong
together are marked wit h a separati on li ne and two yell ow arrows on the front panel of each RockNet
device.
A block of 4 (four) channels is called a QUAD:
QUAD
(four
channel
block)
In RockNet audi o networks I/O routing is done in bl ocks of 4 (four) channels in order to
be able to perform a manual I/O routing of 160 channels on the front panel. A block of
4 (four) channels is called a QUAD. The number of QUADS that can be assigned
within the network is 40 (160 di vided by 4 equals 40). The four channels of a QUAD
are al ways consecuti ve:
QUAD 1 equals channels 1 - 4,
QUAD 2 equals channels 5 - 8,
QUAD 3 equals channels 9 12
and so on
QUAD 39 equals channels 153 - 156
QUAD 40 equals channels 157 - 160
CHANNEL A channel is a 24bit/48kHz audio signal in the network.
A single anal og line level or microphone preamp input is a channel.
A single anal og line level out put is a channel.
AES/EBU inputs and outputs are always two channels.

RockNet is the audio transport network bet ween several sources and destinations.
Inputs and outputs are always looked at from the RN.300 network perspecti ve. This means that an
input is al ways a signal that is put into the network and an output is al ways a signal that is taken from
the network.
This is obvi ous at input and out put devices but it is a little bit different from the usual send and return
nomenclature of analog thi nking.
With RockNet a send (a signal sent from the stage to t he console) is an out put taken from the network
at the console. A return (a signal sent from the console back to the stage) is an input into the network.
In order not to mix-up input and output designations at different locations of the network the nomencla-
ture of RockNet has been defined as ADD (input) and DROP (output) from the network perspecti ve:
ADD
(input)
Any input signal int o the RockNet audio network is called an ADD since it adds a signal
or channel to the network.
An ADD QUAD number is uni que and can only be assigned once in a network. The
assignment of ADD QUADS is interlocked on device and network level.
160 channels can be ADDED to a RockNet300 audio net work.
DROP
(output)
Any output of the RockNet audi o net work is called a DROP since a copy of a signal or
channel is DROPPED from the network.
Any signal once ADDED remains i n the network. A DROP is al ways a copy from an
ADDED signal or channel from the net work.
This is the mechanism how splits are established.
A single channel once ADDED to the network can in theory be DROPPED up to 768
times from the network.

Quad assignment
General Information
After the RockNet audi o net work has been buil d by
poweri ng each device
connecting the CAT.5 network and
setting the synchronizati on master
RockNet is able to transport audio.
Any of the assignments described hereafter will immedi ately send audi o to the respecti ve output
channel. It is important to make sure t hat the system parameters are refl ecting the connected l oads
and sources indi vidual needs to prevent dangerous noise l evels or ampli fi er and sound system dam-
age.

On an 8 channel input or output device 2 (two) Quad assignments have t o be performed. Input Quads
are called ADD QUADS as t hey add audio to the network whereas out put Quads are call ed DROP
QUADS as t hey drop copies of channels (basically splitting audio) from the audi o network. Multiple
drops are possible to buil d a distribution or split system.
Quad assignments can quickly and easily be i denti fied as i n Default Mode of the display the left-hand
and middle displ ay will permanently indicat e the current Quad assignments.
The left-hand displ ay indicates the left-hand Quad number (channels 1 - 4 of this particular device) the
middle displ ay indicates the ri ght-hand Quad number (channels 5 - 8 of this particul ar device).
If no Quad is assigned the respecti ve display shows two horizontal bars -- -- -- --.

single XLR connector.
The Quad number shown i n the respecti ve displ ay equals 2 (t wo) Quads since each XLR connector
represents 2 (two) channels.
The channel count is (from left to right):

Input Assi gnment (Add Quad)
Once an input or add Quad number is assigned, this particular Quad number is not avail abl e any more
for any other input Quad assignment. This mechanism guarantees unique i nput Quad numbers at
each single device as well as in wi red and connected net works.
Output Assignment (Drop Quad)
Outputs do not have this locking mechanism. Output Quads are confi gured the same way as input
Quads. The same output Quad number can be confi gured multipl e times in the same net work to dis-
tribute audio or to emul ate an acti ve split system.

Error Handling
Quad Assignment Errors
In case a network is put together of devices that have al ready been stand alone configured or come
from di fferent net works it can happen that the same input Quad number exists several times in t he
new net work. In this case an error message will i ndicate the miss-assigned Quad numbers by toggli ng
the respecti ve displ ays between Er Er Er Er and the affected Quad number, e.g. 01 01 01 01.
This is also true for Quad assignment errors that are caused by setting the network to 80 channel
mode. Any assigned Quads above 20 whether they are input (ADD) or output (DROP) Quads will be
displayed as errors like described above.
To quickly null the affected Quads push and hol d the buttons underneath the respecti ve display until
the error indication stops flashi ng and shows two horizontal bars (-- -- -- --). Now these Quads can be reas-
sign to availabl e Quad numbers. In order to do so, please follow the instructions above.
This mechanism also works for RN.341.MY interface cards. Since this product has only a single digit
display the entire displ ay flashes to indicate an affected Quad miss assignment. To change the routing
of the RN.341.MY interface card RockWorks is requi red and the Edit Preset Window needs to be
opened.
In case of input Quad assignment errors the affected Quads are not only indicated but are also mut ed
in order not to generate any dat a conflict on the network.

Sync Setting Errors
In case a net work is put together of di fferent network parts which have already been confi gured it can
happen that two or more Primary or Secondary Sync Master are configured.
This does not cause any audio interruption nor does it result in a non operational network.
This type of error is displayed in a way that the affected products show PM PM PM PM or SM SM SM SM and Er Er Er Er toggling and
flashi ng in the left hand displ ay where i n default mode the Device ID is displayed.
In case an RN.341.MY interface card is affected the single di git display flashes.

80 Channel Mode
General descrition

Usually RockNet300 audi o networks are abl e to carry 160 input channels over a single CAT.5 cabl e in
a redundant ring network. In order to do so, all four twisted pai rs in the CAT.5 cabl e are used.
RockNet also provides a so called 80 channel mode where only 80 i nput channels are avail able.
These are Quad numbers 1 (one) to 20 (twenty) which equals channels 1 (one) to 80 (ei ghty).
The 80 channel mode can be used to save cable capacity and use the free two twisted pai rs to trans-
port other information over the same CAT.5 cabl e. A particular adapt er is avail able from Connex
GmbH in Oldenburg in Germany to split the CAT.5 cable or better to say to get access to the two free
twisted pairs of the cable. Different versions of this adapter are availabl e which provi de three pi n XLR
or fi ve pi n XLR access both availabl e in mal e and female.

Example of the Connex split adapter from CAT.5 to 3 pin XLR male.

The 80 channel mode can only be set at the Primary Sync Master or the acti ve Sync Master (might be
a Secondary Sync Master). In case the Sync Master is in 80 channel mode the enti re network is set to
80 channel mode.
In case the Sync Master is an RN.341.MY card the 80 channel mode can be set via the Edit Preset
Window of RockWorks by clicking the check box 80-Ch of the respecti ve RN.341.MY interface card.
The Edit Preset Window of the RN.341.MY interface cards in RockWorks does not gi ve an acti ve
status of the network configuration. Even i f the 80 channel mode is acti ve it is not displ ayed i n the Edit
Reset Window.
If fiber converter RN.351.FI and RN.352.FO are part of t he RockNet 300 audio network only one single
fiber is necessary to obtai n a redundant ri ng network i n 80 channel mode. In t his case output A of t he
RN.351.FI needs to be connected to input B of the RN.352.FO of the fi ber line.

80 channel mode settings
In order to set the network to 80 channel mode the following steps need to be executed at either the
Primary Sync Master or the Secondary Sync Master.
The 80 channel mode can be set in the options menu of the respecti ve sync master device.
Access the options menu by pushing and holdi ng the two buttons underneath the right-hand display
and the two buttons underneath the left-hand display simultaneously.
Then step through the menu by using the two buttons underneath the left -hand displ ay.

RN.302.LO Output Redundancy
The RN.302.LO supports output redundancy. This feature enables the feed of a Power Amp or sel f
powered speaker input from two indi vidual RN.302.LO devices by means of a XLR Y-cabl e.
To enable the output redundancy feature acti vat e the OPEN function by using the hidden OPEN
switch (pl ease see picture bel ow). An acti vated OPEN function is i ndicated by the OPEN LED under-
neath the rel ated output XLR connector.
The related output channels of the two RN.302.LO that are OPEN acti vated need to be set to the
same Quad number in order to send the same out put signal to the ampli fier.
In order to obt ain the same vol ume in case of switchover the CLIP LEVEL setting of the used channels
need to be set to the same value.
Example:
Assign righthand Quad number 17 to bot h RN.302.LO. Acti vate the OPEN function at all outputs of
the related Quad. Set CLIP LEVEL to t he same value. Connect one of the output channels (needs to
be the same on both RN.302.LO) to the i nput of t he power ampli fier or sel f-powered speaker via an
XLR Y-cable. In case one of t he RN.302.LO woul d completely fail the second RN.302.LO feeds the
ampli fier with the same signal. There will be no loss of audio and there will be no artifacts.

RN.341.MY Channel Routing and Presets

The RN.341.MY interface card provides 16 input and 16 output channels in MY16-AT emulation mode.
The front panel features a one digit displ ay and a hexadecimal coded rotary switch for l ocal configura-
tion without using a PC.
The rotary switch enables 16 different settings from 0 (zero) to 9 (nine) and from A to F.
Position 0 (zero) of the rotary switch does not provi de any channel routing and is reserved.
The remai ning 15 settings from 1 (one) to 9 (nine) and A to F each represent a complete routi ng table
of the 16 channel inputs and outputs.
Channel routing on the RN.341.MY interface card is done i n Quads (group of four channels) like in all
other RN. 300 devices. 16 channels are represented by 4 (four) Quads.
In order to be stringent in terms of ADD and DROP the RN. 341.MY interface card is looked at from the
RockNet audio network perspecti ve.
A DROP from the RockNet audio net work is an INPUT into the Yamaha host product and an ADD to
the RockNet audi o net work is an OUTPUT from the Yamaha host product.
Each of t he 15 presets addresses either the full amount or a portion of the avail able input and output
channels respecti vely.
Factory presets are according to the foll owi ng tabl e:

RN.341.MY Synchronization Options
The basics of synchronization of RockNet audi o net works are described on pages 26 to 29 of this
manual.
RN.341.MY interface card being the Sync Master of the RockNet audi o network aut omatically means
that the external Wordclock input (located on the multi-pi n connector) is activated and the respecti ve
Yamaha host product needs to deli ver the sync clock to the RN.341.MY interface card.
The Sync Master status is indicated by a permanent MAS LED on the front panel. The respecti ve Ya-
maha host product needs to be confi gured to deli ver the Wordclock which means it must be set to
internal clock (48kHz).
In case t he RN.341.MY interface card is set to be the sync master and the external sync signal (word-
clock of the Yamaha host product) is not avail able the MAS LED on the front panel will be flashing.

If the RN.341.MY i nterface card is configured to be sync slave the Yamaha host product needs to be
synchronized to the RN.341.MY interface card.

Remote Control of RN.301.MI
In order to remot e control gai n and phantom power of the RN.301.MI from the Yamaha digital mixing
console the Remote Control Cable needs to be connected.
The Remote Control Cable connects the HA REMOTE connector (DB9) on t he front panel of t he
RN.341.MY interface card with either the REMOTE or HA REMOTE connector (DB9) of the Yamaha
digital mixing consol e (pl ease see operating manual of the respecti ve Yamaha product).
The pin-out of the Remote Control Cable is gi ven in the appendix of this manual.
As soon as the Remote Control Cabl e is connected the Yamaha remote control protocol is embedded
into the RockNet transport protocol and travels through the CAT.5 network connection. No additional
cabling is required.

In case more than one RN. 341.MY i nterface card is used in a Yamaha di gital mixing console only one
RN.341.MY needs to be connected to the console via the Remote Control Cable.
The Remote Cont rol Cable should be connected to the RN. 341.MY i nterface card with the l owest
DROP Quad number.
EXAMPLE:
Yamaha M7CL (48) equi pped with 3 (three) RN.341.MY.
Card in slot 1 is set to factory preset number 1 (Drop Quads 1 - 4)
Card in slot 2 is set to factory preset number 2 (Drop Quads 5 - 8)
Card in slot 3 is set to factory preset number 3 (Drop Quads 9 - 12)
The Remote Control Cabl e shoul d be connected to the RN.341.MY in slot number 1.
If the cable would be connected to e.g., the RN.341.MY in slot number 2 the first four Quads (channels
1 to 16, equals two RN.301.MI) would not be remotely accessible from the console.

The configuration of the RN.301.MI channels (gain and phant om power) is linked to the Quad number.
This means that the configuration of the 4 (four) channels that belong to an ADD Quad of a RN.301.MI
travel trough the RockNet audi o network wherever they are assigned i n the net work and al ways re-
main the same i nput faders of the consol e (unless the internal routing of the console changes).

As soon as the Remot e Control Cabl e is connected t he RN.301.MI that are addressed are under con-
trol of the respecti ve Yamaha di gital mixing console regardi ng gai n and phant om power settings. Any
changes of these channel parameters on the front panel of the respecti ve RN.301.MI devices will be
immediat ely overwritten by the consol e to the value set from the console.
In case RockWorks is used the channel l abel windows of the RN.301.MI channels that are under con-
trol of the consol e are marked with a red background to indicat e that the respecti ve channel parame-
ters cannot be changed from the PC.

RockWorks provi des the Edit Preset Window (please see next chapter and RockWorks manual)
which all ows to define the number of emul ated preamps. A preamp is an RN.301.MI device.
EXAMPLE:
Yamaha PM5D equi pped with 4 (four) RN.341.MY.
Preamp count of RN.341.MY interface card i n slot number 1 (one) is set t o 6 (six) in factory preset
number 1 (one).
This means that the first RN. 341.MY i nterface card emul ates 8 (ei ght) RN.301.MI microphone pream-
plifiers and gi ves remot e control access to the 48 channels of those RN. 301.MI.

Add and Add Count
In order to make the Quad routing of the RN.341.MY interface card more efficient and economic the
number of Add Quads can be assigned in 1 (one) Quad steps between 1 (one) and 4 (four) Quads.
EXAMPLE:
If Add is set to 17 and Add Count is set to 1, only Quad number 17 is added to the network
If Add is set to 17 and Add Count is set to 2, Quad number 17 and 18 are added to the network
If Add is set to 17 and Add Count is set to 3, Quad number 17, 18 and 19 are added to the net work
If Add is set to 17 and Add Count is set to 4, Quad number 17, 18, 19 and 20 are added to the network

Add and Add Count are linked in order not to exceed the number of available Quads.
EXAMPLE:
If Add is set to 40, Add Count is limited to 1
If Add is set to 39, Add Count can be up to 2
If Add is set to 38, Add Count can be up to 3
If Add is set to 37, Add Count can be up to 4

Independent Gain
The Independent Gai n feature enabl es RockNet 300 users to do independent gain settings of up to 8
(eight) Yamaha di gital mixing consol es in a single RockNet300 audi o network.
Independent Gain is a feature of the RN.341.MY Yamaha interface cards. It is configurable by using
the Edit Preset Window of RockWorks.
RN.341.MY Yamaha Interface cards that are plugged into one Yamaha host product are put together
in the same so call ed Gai n Group. All RN.341.MY interface cards within the same group are not com-
pensating the gai n settings. In total 8 (eight) gai n groups are available. They are simply numbered
from 1 (one) to 8 (ei ght).
The Yamaha host product that contains RN.341.MY interface cards configured to gain group number 1
(one) is the so called gai n master. The gai n master is the one that has access to the anal og gain of
the RN.301.MI (on stage) and thus needs to careful not to dri ve the signal into clippi ng.
All other gai n groups (two to ei ght) are so called gain slaves.
Any gain setting or adj ustment of any of the consoles in a net work (no matter if it is the gain master or
one of the gain slaves) will be compensated on any other console of the network.
EXAMPLE:
A concert with a FOH and Monitor console is recorded via a separate recordi ng consol e. The FOH
console has gai n group one (gai n master), t he monitor console has gai n group two and t he recordi ng
console has gain group t hree. If now the monit or mixer increases the gain of channel 16 by six dB,
channel 16 will be compensated accordi ngly at the FOH and recording consol e by decreasing the gain
of channel 16 by 6dB.
The gain compensation works either way (increase and decrease). Even i f the gai n master has turned
the gain down to -6dB all other consoles of the network can adjust the gain over the full range from -
6dB to +66dB. In such an unlikely case the noise will be li fted accordi ngly and the signal will not be in
its best signal to noise ratio.
With Independent Gai n RockNet resembles an analog passi ve split system instead of an analog acti ve
split system.
EXAMPLE:
In case two FOH consoles are used, the gain groups of the two consoles equipped with RN.341.MY
interface cards need to identical, e.g. gain group one. In this case no gain compensation takes place
between the two FOH consol es.

IMPORTANT:
Independent Gai n requi res a Yamaha remote cable connected at all consoles of the network that par-
ticipate in Independent Gain. If the Yamaha remote cable is missing at one of the consoles this con-
sole cannot communicate its gain settings to the network.

RN.351.FI and RN.352.FO
The RN.350 Series Fiber Interfaces are designed to be used for applications where extended distance
between RockNet devices is requi red. They are equipped with uni versal transcei vers for single or multi
mode fibers to meet the respecti ve infrastructure requirements. The modules cover a range of up to
20km on Single mode fi ber and up to 2km on multi mode fiber.
The RN.351.FI and RN.352.FO consist of the standard RockNet300 CAT.5 Net work Interface in- and
output on the front panel. The rear of the products is designed with t wo l ocking SC simpl ex fi ber con-
nectors and a locking IEC power connector.
The converters feature modul ar rugged enclosures.
The dimensions are: 40mm high, 80mm wi de and 200mm long.
The modules fit into the 1RU FiberFOX modul ar frame.

To connect two RockNet300 l ocations one RN.351.FI on one end and one RN. 352.FO on the other
end is required to build a redundant link (with t wo fi bers, connector A and B).

RN.362.IR
The RN.362.IR is a so call ed Inli ne Repeater and extends the CAT.5 length between two RN. 300 de-
vices to another 150m (500ft). The RN.362 is remotely powered vi a power the CAT. 5 cabl e. No addi-
tional power supply is required.
To use the RN. 362. IR it is requi red to equip the 19 RN.300 devices with the optional RN.300.RP re-
mote power extension. The RN.300. RP opti on needs to be ordered at your dealer/distributor, who can
also upgrade your existing RN.300 devices. The green LEDs between the Ethercon Link connectors
(link input and link output separately) indicate the existence of build in remote power option.
It is not possible to use the RN.300.RP with RN.341.MY interface cards because this card cannot
supply the required power for the use of the RN.362. IR. This means that a RN.362.IR cannot be used
between two Yamaha host products equi pped with RN.341.MY interface cards that are di rectly con-
nected vi a CAT.5.
In order to obtain power redundancy the 19 RN.300 devices at both ends of the repeater section can
be equi pped with t he remote power option RN.300.RP. In case one of the remote power options in
one of the 19 devices woul d fail the RN.362.IR would still be powered from the other end.
It is also possible to use two RN.362.IR bet ween two RN.300 19 devices to obtai n a maximum dis-
tance of 450m (1,500ft ) on CAT.5 cabl e. In this case both 19 RockNet devices need to be equi pped
with the RN.300RP option. Each RN.300 device would then power one RN.362.IR from each end. In
this case power redundancy is not possible.
