Rays Manager Joe Maddon
On the win:
The music is back on in the clubhouse after the game. We have our unique postgame celebration when we win. I love that staff. Its good. Its
good to hear the music. Thats a good frst game to hopefully start getting us back in the right direction. We did some things well. For instance,
over the last three games weve given up one walk and punched out 39 games. Thats highly impressive. Weve got to build off of that from the
pitching perspective. Again, I dont want to be Mr. Negative but 15 left on base is no fun tonight. Thats got to get better but hopefully the mood
will change in the sense where its always easier to come to work following a win. Weve got a day game tomorrow, a very emotional day ahead
of us so Id like to believe we can build off of this.
On if Kevin Kiermaiers hustle is contagious:
I want to believe its going to be very contagious. I mean, the kid plays the game the right way, the proper way. If Im any other player on this
team and watch the way he plays, and Im not impacted by that then my eyes are closed. Youve got to go out with your eyes wide open. Youve
got to play with your hair on fre just like hes doing right now.
On Erik Bedards outing:
Frenchy was good. That second and third nobody out escape piece, that pretty much had a lot to do with winning that game, maybe had ev-
erything to do with winning that game because if they had put up several runs right there, itd have been very diffcult again with the mood and
thought of having to come from behind would have been very, very diffcultThat one particular moment I think won tonights game.
On Jake McGees bounce back appearance:
Not surprising whatsoever. Yesterday he had really good stuff yesterday also but today was even a little bit better. He felt really good before
the game today, we spoke with him, and hes been spectacular. He is our one true All-Star for this particular team. If youre playing an All-Star
Game and having to win it, this guy could come out of the pen and get righties and lefties out at a very high degree. Hopefully everybody else
is paying attention.
Erik Bedard
On the effectiveness of his curveball:
Throw it for strikes when youre ahead in the count, behind in the count and they cant sit on one pitch.
On escaping the jam in the 3rd inning:
Youve just got to bear down and make some pitches. Just try to limit the damage. If one run would have scored, it would have been a good
inning so I just tried to throw strikes and get some outs.
On pitching with a lead:
It helps. When you score early runs and get the lead, it puts the other team on defense so you can throw more frst pitch strikes and get ahead.
On the win:
Its way more fun winning so we celebrated and hopefully we can do that tomorrow too.
Jose Molina
On starting the winning effort with his frst RBI of the season:
It was good to put the team ahead. I play for the team, I dont play for myself. To help the team to get the run in and try to get the win, Im
happy for that The last 10 games werent going our way, and we just put it in the past now and start a new winning streak. I think the guys
were excited about it.
Kevin Kiermaier
On stretching his 4th inning hit into a double:
I just try to play with good energy every day and on a play like that I just try to catch the outfelder sleeping. I just wanted to be aggressive there
and try to spark us and get something going. It ended up working outbecause Ive gotten thrown out doing that before and it doesnt look
goodso right there I like my chances. Like I said, I just wanted to spark us any way I could.
On his current stint in the majors so far:
Its been really good, just getting to know everyone and everyone really accepting me. Everyone treats me great so its been a lot of fun so far.
Were going to try to pull out some more wins and get this thing going again, but everyones attitude has been really good so its kind of a fun
time for me.
On snapping the 10-game losing streak:
We defnitely were desperate for some wins and tonight was huge. Our pitching staff was great and weve been swinging a lot better the last
few days so were going to try to continue to keep it going and have a good month and get back in this thing.
Manager Lloyd McClendon
On the loss:
This is one of those days that we didnt play very well on either side of the baseball. Those things happen. We have to put it behind us and get
ready for tomorrow.
On Chris Youngs outing:
He wasnt very sharp but not real bad. I thought he pitched better than his line really. We didnt help him much. Those things happen.
On Rays starter Erik Bedard:
He was okay. Our bats werent great tonight. He threw okay, I mean, plus he had what? Nine strikeouts? That says a lot so he must have been
doing something right...Tonight we just didnt have good at-bats.
Chris Young
On his outing and Bedards performance:
Youre not going to be as sharp as you like every night. [My] command wasnt as good as Id like it to be, but there are going to be nights like
that. Ultimately, you tip your cap to Erik Bedard. He shut us down, came in and threw a great game. The one run was enough. I wish I went
deeper into the game and saved the bullpen some innings. I was fghting a little bit just trying to keep us in there.
On the Rays scoring via bunt play:
It got stuck in my glove. I maybe couldve rushed it and made the play. At that point I thought, Id better eat it. Its a tough angle to throw the
ball down the line with the runner running, so I felt like I didnt get it out cleanly. It was a big out, but at the time in the ffth inning, you think that
theres still a lot of baseball left to be played. I didnt want to throw the ball away, and I had confdence I could make good pitches after that.
Brad Miller
On Erik Bedards scoreless outing:
He just kind of paints and nibbles, and we werent able to get something going. I know he got a lot of us to chase something up and mixed in a
little fastball, a little cutter in there, but he threw well, kept us off the bases. I found it a little deceptive. [He] switches it up. Hes very crafty and
last year he pitched well against us, too. Just couldnt square it up. He kept us a little bit off balance.
On not getting an early lead:
No question, that changes the game. You get in, those guys strike frst and Chris can go out there and keep doing his thing. Any time you get
out of that, the momentum goes back to the other guys. We have to do a better job with executing there, starting with me.
