In late 2007, Alstom was awarded the contract for the construction of the Fujairah 2
Cogeneration Power Plant.
Flexibility was a key driver for this independent water and power project as the
integrated plant needs to sustain seasonal power demand variations, while maintaining
full desalination output throughout the year.
Potable water in this region is always in great demand, while power consumption
driven by the need for air-conditioning dramatically increases during the peak summer
months, especially in the Northern Emirates.
Utilizing the Plant Integrator approach for designing and constructing turnkey EPC
power plants, Alstom was able to offer a highly fexible, tailor-made dual-fuel solution
with in-house core components (gas turbines, Generators, steam turbines, HRSG,
Condenser and Plant DCS).
The solution provided for power output variability from 40% to 100% using the GT26
with sequential combustion, air inlet cooling, duct fring and a condensing-extraction
steam turbine for controlled steam extraction.
The power plant currently generates a capacity of 2000 MW net and 130 MIGD(1)
(approximately 600000 m3/day) of potable water.
(1) MIGD = million imperial gallons of water per day
