Swale Youth Forum Meetng

Wednesday 21 May 2014

Five of our Year 8 and 9 students atended a Swale Youth Forum Meetng on Wednesday 21 May
along with other schools in the Swale area. Meetngs are usually held in the Swale Borough
Council chambers, but due to local electon actvity, this meetng was hosted by The Abbey
School, Faversham. As a result, it is hoped that future meetngs will be hosted by other partci-
patng schools, so our students are hoping we can take our turn.
Students discussed local issues with Swale Borough Council representatves and met the new
Mayor, Cllr Bobbing.
Our students enjoyed the experience and represented Oasis Academy in an exemplary fashion,
actvely taking part in discussion and ofering suggestons. I was extremely proud of them and
their conduct.
The girls are planning to write a report detailing the main points and opportunites for further
involvement arising from this meetng.

Following and promoting the Oasis ethos, the BITE Department has continued to strengthen links with
the local community. Year 12 ICT students have been working with 2 local Primary Schools (Minster-in-
Sheppey CP and St. Georges CEP) to develop experience and understanding in networking and
concepts involved with working in the fast paced environment of ICT.
Some of the challenges students faced were:
* Taking apart computer systems
* Building systems
* Understanding software and hardware architecture required for a network to operate
Students had this to say about the day:
Ryan Barnes I enjoyed it because we learnt how to take apart a computer and how they run their
systems.
Lewis Green We looked at settings on both the staff laptops and students laptops. This allowed us to see the difference between what
the teachers can access and what the students can access. We all worked as a team to eliminate problems. It was good work experience
and allowed us to see what an IT technician has to do on a daily basis.
Georgia Eve The experience I had returning back to Minster-in-Sheppey CP was memorable as everything has changed and improved
from when I was last there 10 years ago. Through this experience I have learnt the needs of computers as shown and explained by the I.T
technician. He could control the whole school which I found very helpful. We had experience of using a network server and remotely ac-
cessing individual PC stations which are usually controlled by a Network Manager.
Taylor Gardner It was my first visit to Minster-in-Sheppey CP and St. Georges CEP, it was a pleasant experience as it was different from
my Primary School. Mr Burrows showed us around the school and was extremely helpful with teaching us about different technology. We
learnt the structure and control of a server and also how configurations differed by pupil and staff in order to allow different access levels.
Rebecca Loghmani- When we went to Minster-in-Sheppey CP and St. Georges CEP we learnt all about the computers and how they are
controlled by one server that Mr Burrows showed us. Technology has changed a lot from when I was at school, it has improved a lot and
is more modern.
Students upheld exemplary behaviour and were complimented on the dynamics of the group work and endeavour when learning and
experiencing new topics and concepts in industry. We thank both Minster-in-Sheppey CP and St. Georges CEP for allowing students this
experience.

Interviews have been held competition was fierce and candidates have
been chosen!

Tempest wants nothing more than to surf the waves near her home
in California, whilst continuing her relationship with her boyfriend
Mark as well as taking care of her two brothers and surfer dad.

But Tempest is half mermaid and half human, as her 17
th
birthday
approaches she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give
herself to the ocean like her mother.

Tempest finally gives in to the waters and enters a fantastic under-
water world and finds that a larger destiny awaits her.

I really like the underwater world. Tracey Deebs has created the my-
thology around the mermaids and the enemy that Tempest has to
face a very creative story and kept me reading until the end.

ICT Club

Mr Willders and Mr Macinnes currently run a Retro
Gaming Club across all ages to build relatonships
between diferent Year groups in the Academy.

The club is independently run by a Year 7 student
who organises what will happen each week and
sessions can range from students playing on an old
Atari 2600 to playing mass multplayer games on an
original Xbox.

The club provides a good fun environment but with
a friendly compettve edge; all compettons are run
by students to teach them independence and re-
sponsibility.

To further enhance the computer club we are going
to merge with computer science/building, this is so
students can learn how consoles work, and how
technology has changed over tme. This merger is
key to the learning focus and not just gaming!

The topics to be covered are:

>Networking (students will learn how to build
a computer and create a network)
>Game development (from design to
implementaton)
>System building (troubleshootng to solving)
>Programming (from design to implementaton)
>Exploring sofware packages (encouraging freeware
so all students can access the program)

We have been collectng resources for the students
to use and the technology spans over the past 20
years!

All donatons of equipment working or non-working
are welcome!

Overall it has been highly successful and has enabled
students to engage in gaming and ICT.
Year 9 Business StudiesCofee Morning

On Wednesday next, the 11
th
of June our Year 9 Business students will be
holding a cofee morning. This event will run from 9.30am to 10.30am in the
West site Refectory.

Students will be selling a variety of hot drinks and tasty cakes. Along with
this students will also be setng up their own stalls, some examples include
nail paintng, boot fair, knock the cans, and cake decoratng. The students
have aimed to target a wide range of customers through the variaton in
their stalls.

All are welcome to atend and proceeds will be donated to Demelza House.

The Enabling Enterprise Year 9 course has allowed students to delve into the
world of enterprise and has given them the freedom to use their creatve
and imaginatve skills. The cofee morning has been planned entrely by the
students.

So far the students have gained a variety of skills such as communicaton,
organising, planning, customer service, decision-making and problem-
solving skills throughout the planning phase. These skills will also be devel-
oped throughout the implementaton and review stages. This event is the
culminaton of their project work, necessary for them to be entered by the
BITE department for a Grade B equivalent GCSE level certfcate. The stu-
dents have thoroughly enjoyed their experience so far and are looking for-
ward to the day.

Both the students and the BITE department look forward to the event and
welcoming guests to the Academy.

Kent School GamesRugby Tag Finals
Year 7 & 8 Girls finish fourth in Kent!
With a backdrop of Tonbridge School and world class facilities the day promised to be one the girls would re-
member. 12 schools across Kent took part in the Kent School Games Rugby Tag finals. With a few last minute
dropouts the girls arrived to the tournament with a bare seven to a school building one of the girls referred to
as Hogwarts. The girls were very nervous before their first match, as many of them had only ever played rug-
by in their PE lessons back in September, the team organised around the most experienced three players Bil-
lie Halliday, Chloe Sledge and Katie Kew. The girls lead by example with great solo runs and superb support
lines of running to win the first game 7-5. The second game saw another fantastic start by the girls with all sev-
en players now fully taking the fight to the opposition. The highlight of the scores came from Billie Halliday who
dodged and jinked past 4 players running two thirds of the pitch. The girls finished excellent second game
clear winners!
The third match was a step up in opposition and the girls were quickly 2 tries down. On two occasions the girls
came close to scoring but were pulled up by the referee for infringements. After some great passing down the
line the girls were finally able to score in the corner. The half time whistle following shortly with the girls 3-1
down. The second half saw the girls rally and lift their heads and it was a much closer game. The match was
tied 3-3 with two minutes to play. After a good attacking phase from us the opposition broke out wide and
scored a dubious try in the corner to take the lead. The final seconds of the game saw the girls moving the ball
wide where Billie was able to break and make a clear run to the line. Despite their best efforts, they lost 4-3
and the girls were clearly disappointed. With no rest after any of the games the girls faced their last pool game
and with their minds still on their previous game conceded quickly. Cydney Arnold responded by running
strongly to the corner to score her first try of the day. The game followed a similar pattern for the majority of the
game. Unfortunately the opposition was able to get a lucky break and score a well-worked try in the last few
minutes to finish winners.
The girls final match saw them in the third and fourth place play off again Highworth Grammar School. With no
rest between the games, a very tired Sheppey team took to the field. The game was very fast with both teams
running the length and width of the pitch to finish the half 2-2. The girls put all their last reserves of energy into
the game but were playing a squad of 11 players, the efforts of the previous matches started to show and they
conceded two unanswered tries. The girls were frustrated as if they were fresh and full of energy the result
could have been very different. The girls were the only team to play all four matches in row as they sat the first
game out and they were the only team with seven players. They played incredibly well and were proud of their
achievement finishing 4
th
overall. Well done!
