1.0 INTRODUCTION Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, and improve the software. Open source licenses often meet the requirements of the Open Source Definition. Some open source software is available within the public domain. Open source software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-source development and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated content or (legally defined) open content movements. The term open-source software originated as part of a marketing campaign for free software. A report by Standish Group states that adoption of open-source software models has resulted in savings of about $60 billion per year to consumers.
HARDWARE Hardware is a comprehensive term for all of the physical parts of a computer, as distinguished from the data it contains or operates on, and the software that provides instructions for the hardware to acoomplish tasks. The boundary between hardware and software is slightly blurry - firmware is software that is "built-in" to the hardware, but such firmware is usually the province of computer programmers and computer engineers in any case and not an issue that computer users need to concern themselves with.
SOFTWARE Computer software, or just software, is a collection of computer programs and related data that provides the instructions for telling a computer what to do and how to do it. Software refers to one or more computer programs and data held in the storage of the computer for some reasons. In other words, software is a set of programs, procedures, algorithms and its documentation concerned with the operation of a data processing system. Program software performs the function of the program it implements, either by directly providing instructions to the computer hardware or by serving as input to another piece of software.
2.1 MEANING OF OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM Open source software most often is associated with free software and while this might be true on many open source programs the main difference is that a person can take open source software, including an operating system such as Linux, and can modify and change the program to suit their needs. The nice thing about an open source operating system like Linux is how much you can customize it, the downside is that it requires quite a bit of knowledge about computer programming and this software also coordinate all activities of a computer system such as managing memory.
2.2 EXAMPLE OF OPEN SOURCE
LINUX Kernel 3.5 21 July 2012 Linux is a Unix-like computer operating system assembled under the model of free and open source software development and distribution. The defining component of Linux is the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released 5 October 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux was originally developed as a free operating system for Intel x86-based personal computers. It has since been ported to more computer hardware platforms than any other operating system. It is a leading operating system on servers and other big iron systems such as mainframe computers and supercomputers.
UBUNTU 12.04 26 April 2012 Ubuntu is a computer operating system based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution and is distributed as free and open source software with additional proprietary software available. Ubuntu is composed of many software packages, of which the vast majority are distributed under a free software license (also known as open source). The main license used is the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) which, along with the GNU Lesser General Public License (GNU
LGPL), explicitly declares that users are free to run, copy, distribute, study, change, develop and improve the software. Ubuntu is sponsored by the UK-based company Canonical Ltd., owned by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth. By keeping Ubuntu free and open source, Canonical is able to utilize the talents of community developers in Ubuntu's constituent components. Instead of selling Ubuntu for profit, Canonical creates revenue by selling technical support and from creating several services tied to Ubuntu. Canonical releases new versions of Ubuntu every six months and supports Ubuntu for eighteen months by providing security fixes, patches to critical bugs and minor updates to programs. LTS (Long Term Support) versions, which are released every two years, are supported for three years on the desktop and five years for servers. The latest version of Ubuntu, 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), is such an LTS version, and was released on April 29, 2010.
3.0THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE 3.1 MEANING OF OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE Open Source Application Software (also called as end-user programs) includes database programs, word processors, and spreadsheets. It is free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms and this software also perform specific task or function for user.
3.2 EXAMPLES OF OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE Apache Open Office 3.4 May 8, 2012 Apache Open Office is an open-source office productivity software suite containing word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, graphics, formula editor, and database management applications. It was formerly known as OpenOffice.org under Sun, then Oracle ownership. Open Office's default file format is the Open Document Format (ODF), a ISO/IEC standard. It can also handle other file formats including those from Microsoft Office. Open Office runs on several operating systems.
GIMP 2.8 May 3, 2012 GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is an image retouching and editing tool and is released under the GPLv3 (or later) license as free and open-source software. There are versions of GIMP tailored for most operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. GIMP has tools used for image retouching and editing, free-form drawing, resizing, cropping, photo-montages (combining multiple images), converting between different image formats, and more specialised tasks. Animated images such as GIF and MPEG files can be created using an animation plugin. The developers and maintainers of GIMP have a product vision for GIMP to strive to be a free software graphics application for the editing and creation of original images, photos, icons, graphical elements of web pages and art for user interface elements.

5.0 PERVASIVE COMPUTING 5.1 MEANING OF PERVASIVE COMPUTING Ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) is a post-desktop model of human-computer interaction in which information processing has been thoroughly integrated into everyday objects and activities. In the course of ordinary activities, someone "using" ubiquitous computing engages many computational devices and systems simultaneously, and may not necessarily even be aware that they are doing so. This model is usually considered an advancement from the desktop paradigm. More formally, ubiquitous computing is defined as "machines that fit the human environment instead of forcing humans to enter theirs."
5.2 EXAMPLES OF PERVASIVE COMPUTING 5.2.1 Sony Smart Watch Smart watches have never quite caught on with consumers, and yet they continue to fascinate we on the fringes of Geek Chic. Dating back to the days of Casios calculator and Data Bank models, the novelty of packing computing power on our wrists has held some strange appeal to at least a few of us. As I kid I owned at least two calculator watches, not to mention a Pac-Man gaming watch with four-button D-Pad. Then I hit middle school, got self-consciously awkward, and bought the most conservative Swatch in the mall. But I digress. Microsoft made a run at getting out in front of the smart watch market back in 2004 with their ill-fated SPOT watches, and almost a full decade later the trend is threatening a comeback. Apples not-quite-smart iPod nano has achieved some wrist top success thanks to a small cottage industry of accessory wristbands, and a small handful of companies big and small are also throwing their hats bracelets into the fray with an array of takes on the 21st Century wrist- mounted computer. 5.2.2 Smart Pen You write, IRISNotes converts it into editable text! Write your notes anytime, anywhere. When you are back to your computer, simply connect the USB receiver to your computer (PC or Mac). Export to PC, Mac, iPhone or iPad. Easily export your notes on your PC and Mac using the USB connexion or send it directly to your iPhone and iPad using the free IRISnotes application to write and draw on your mobile device and available on the App Store.
6.0 CONCLUSION Open Source can be used by anyone and because it has no copyright claims, so users are free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms. Pervasive Computing is to make our lives easier because we can interact with computers. Besides that, we can easily give the computer commands and the computer will grant your wish.
