On March 21-24 JSC Lenexpo organized and hosted the XI International Ecological Forum Ecology of Big City. This year it assembled the specialists from 21 countries and 73 Russian cities and has become the largest one among already held editions. The Forum Ecology of Big City has become the central event of the St. Petersburg Ecological Week, organized under the initiative of the St. Petersburg Government and aimed at the St. Petersburg image development as the ecological capital of Russia.

During the official opening ceremony of the Forum Mr. Sergey P. Alexeev, the director general of JSC Lenexpo, mentioned that for eleven years already Lenexpo has become the venue for business activity in the sphere of realization of environmental projects. To his words, organization of the Forum and specialized exhibitions is most vital with respect to the critical ecological situation in Japan. We realize that the matters of environmental protection are relevant to all of us, and the future of our planet lies upon us all said Mr. Alexeev.
The exhibition section of the Forum was traditionally represented by four specialized exhibitions: Waste management: technologies and equipment, Water treatment, Air protection, Environmental services and equipment. This year the exhibition section was added with specialized expositions: Recycling Expo technologies for recycling and industrial reuse of secondary raw materials, and Ecological culture and education exposition of educational institutions, research centers and public ecological organizations.
This year the exhibitions of the Forum Ecology of Big City were participated by 182 companies from Russia, Austria, Great Britain, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, the USA, Ukraine, Finland, France, Czechia, Sweden and Estonia. The total exhibition space constituted 5.000 sq. m. As the center of ecologically clean technologies, the Lahti region (Finland) presented the collective exposition of Finnish companies. The Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic and the Trade Promotion Agency CzechTrade organized the collective stand of the Czech companies, providing services and equipment for sewage-waters treatment, water-supply and filtering, industrial ventilation. The Czech exhibition booth hosted many business meetings, the press-conference and the seminar Czech water technologies in Russia which provided the opportunity to strengthen mutual cooperation in the sphere of ecology.
A large-scale exposition was presented by the SUE Vodokanal of St. Petersburg which also organized the visits to the South-West treatment facilities and to the South water-treatment station (Block K-6). Their working experience and innovations in the sphere of environmental protection were demonstrated at the exhibition booth of the Baltika company, which organized the visit to its production site in St. Petersburg. In the out-door JSC Turmalin held 7 presentations of their unique product the incinerator of biologically hazardous wastes IN-50.1K.
At the exhibition booth of the St. Petersburg Committee for Nature Management, Environmental Protection and Ecological Safety Provision the Government of St. Petersburg demonstrated the priority trends in the city administration actions in the sphere of ecological policy.
During the whole period of the Forum the visitors could see the Ecomobile the mobile receiver of hazardous wastes. Here the citizens of St. Petersburg could return fluorescent lamps, mercury thermometers, batteries, accumulators, energy-efficient lamps, and other dangerous wastes.
On March 21 the business section of the Forum was opened by the panel discussion Modern megacity: technologies for ecology, devoted to the discussion of the best up-to-date technologies in waste-management, ecological safety of water and air on the basis of the European experience, etc. St. Petersburg should become the city of green revolution. This idea was announced by Mr. Mikhail Begak, the Expert of the Committee of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, the member of the Research Center of Ecological Safety by the Russian Academy of Sciences. He proposed to develop the regional standards for detergents use the synthetic cleaning agents used in the Baltic region. Such standards shall be limited in phosphorus as it is stated in the standards of the EU regulations.
On March 22 everyone could attend the conference Industrial and domestic wastes management: Russian and international experience organized by the Government of St. Petersburg. Last years the problems of wastes recycling and reuse of secondary raw materials became critical. And though this sphere develops steadily, the solutions on the legislative level are even more crucial. To work successfully in the sphere of waste recycling in Russia it is necessary to conduct the self-regulation of business society. It was one of the primary results of the conference.
March 23 was devoted to the conference Clean water of big cities dedicated to the development strategy of the centralized water supply. The conference demonstrated the developments of new water-treatment facilities. The specialists could study the functioning of the hybrid technology of water purification and the innovative technology of the use of sodium ferrate for water disinfection.
In total the Forum included 18 events of business program and 5 visits to industrial sites. Lenexpo was visited by over 3500 specialists from 21 countries (Russia, Austria, Belorussia, Brazil, Germany, India, Italy, China, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, the USA, Ukraine, Finland, France, Czechia, Sweden, Estonia, Ethiopia, South Africa) and 73 Russian cities.
For example the Forum was attended by the Head of the Administration of Greater Mumbai, Mr. Subodh Kumar. This city is famous as one of the worlds largest cities, with a population over 21 mln. Thus, the city traditionally have to face the whole scope of ecological problems.
The development of Russian-Austrian relations and cooperation within the industrial exhibitions was supported by the official visit of Ms. Dorthe Kunelis, the Deputy Head of the Department for Technology and Ecological Safety at the industrial enterprises by the Austrian Ministry of Ecology. She participated in the specialized panel discussion Modern megacity: technologies for ecology.
Within the cooperation tradition between the city-partners St. Petersburg and Rio-de-Janeiro the Forum Ecology of Big City was attended by Mr. Alexandro de Bonis, the Coordinator for Water Resources of the Rio-de-Janeiro Government.
The Forum attracted the special attention of the delegation from the South African. Mr. Derek Batte, the representative of the South African National Energy Research Institute (SANERI), and representatives of the Clear Sky Energy company specially came to study the working experience of Russian colleagues in the sphere of energy generation from recycled wastes.
During the last day the Forum was visited by the official delegation of the Addis-Ababa city headed by Mr. Kuma Demeksa, the city mayor. The Ethiopian guests were mostly interested in up-to-date technologies of waste collection and recycling of domestic wastes in megacities.
The interest to ecology is not limited geographically and the success of the Forum Ecology of Big City proved once again that with every year more and more companies unite with the purpose of environmental protection, development of ecological projects and introduction of ecologically friendly technologies. The organizers of the Forum are sure that the organization of the Forum is a substantial contribution to the development of ecological policy in Russia, and are looking forward to see you all in Lenexpo next year, on March 21-23.
