Scaffolded Inquiry Based Writing
In order to achieve academic and
career success, students must
effectively write for multiple
purposes. For this reason, EduSkills
places a heavy emphasis on providing
quality professional learning
opportunities that support high-quality
student writing. By teaching writing
through the Inquiry, Modeling,
Shared, Collaborative, Independent
(IMSCI) model teachers will ensure
that students understand and respond
to the expectations of a variety of
writing situations.
IMSCI is based on social learning
theory and genre study and allows
teachers to model both process
and the product of effective writ-
ing. Through the IMSCI model,
students build background and
knowledge of diverse writing
genres while receiving explicit
scaffolds for support which lead
to quality independent student
writing. As a result, educators
positively impact the writing
abilities and academic
achievement of each student.
Silvia Read, PhD.
Sylvia Read, lead EduSkills IMSCI trainer, is an associate professor of language arts and literacy
and director of graduate studies at Utah State University. She is a former elementary and middle
school teacher whose passion for teaching literacy and writing began while observing and
participating in the language development of her daughter. As the creator of the IMSCI model,
her research and multiple publications focus on effective writing instruction in culturally and
linguistic diverse K-12 setting.
