Pastors Ponderings
Listen! A sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed,
some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate
them up. 5 Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they
did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly,
since they had no depth of soil. 6 But when the sun rose,
they were scorched; and since they had no root, they
withered away. 7 Other seeds fell among thorns, and the
thorns grew up and choked them. 8 Other seeds fell on
good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some
thirty. 9 Let anyone with ears listen!" - Matthew 13:3-9, NRSV

Just recently Ive finished an interesting book entitled Sticky
Church. Its written by Larry Osbourne, the Lead Pastor of
North Coast Church (www.northcoastchurch.com) in
northern San Diego County. North Coast is what one could
call a mega church with around 9,500 in weekly attendance,
spread out over four campuses and 13 weekly worship
services. Its apparent that North Coast knows what they
are doing when it comes to reaching others for Christ. They
are creative and innovative in sharing Gods Gospel. And
Osbornes book is focused upon that Great Commission
calling of God to make disciples by baptizing and teaching
followers seeking deeper relationship with God. Osborne
writes, Weve often become so focused upon reaching people that weve
forgotten the importance of keeping people. And thats the thesis of this
book: Our churches need to be stickier. Stickier churches are healthier
churches. They not only draw in spiritual window-shoppers and lead
them to Christ; they also grow them up to maturity. As Osborne
suggests its not all about bringing people into the church as
members yes, thats vitally important. Its just as important
that churches and their leaders learn how to nurture and
encourage the spiritual growth of those members. Its
relatively easy to get people to enter the front doors of the
church. Whats harder is keeping them from slipping out the
back due to inactivity. Churches need to be stickier we
need to be better about, once people join, helping them to
move forward along their journeys of faith and God-
relationship. We need to be intentional in offering
opportunities to more meaningfully connect with God and
others. The focus is upon SPIRITUAL GROWTH

Jesus offers a powerful parable in Matthew 13 focused upon
soil and the seed desiring to grow in those soils. Perhaps you
are familiar some falls on the hard ground and are quickly
eaten by the birdsother falls on rocky ground where is
sprouts but because there is no depth - is quickly scorched
by the sunother seed falls among the thorns and are quickly
choked and have no ability to growand still other falls on
fertile soil where it has the ability to produce fruit. In his
book Osbourne offers this parable with the thought that in
Jesus day no farmer would ever be satisfied with initial growth
killed off before harvestA crop that didnt last all the way to harvest
was a financial disaster. And whats interesting to consider is
that not only is Jesus focused on the seed likening it to our
spiritual lives and the ability it has to grow through God-
connection but also the soil itself. The soil is very much the
catalyst for growth it either promotes the growth of the
seed or causes it to die out. The condition of the soil IS
VITAL

Which leads me to all of us here at Grace UMCHow is the
condition of our soil? Are we a place that not only welcomes
folks in but also encourages their continued growth? Are we
helping our visitors and members to find meaningful points
of connection (Sunday School, Bible studies, small group
ministries) that help them to spiritually flourish? And whats
so important to hear is that WE ALL have a part to play in
the growth of a seed/member. The pastors can only do
part of the planting and nurturing the bulk of the harvest
work is upon you as members of Grace and Gods Kingdom.
How are you claiming our calling to help Grace UMC become
the kind of place where all can grow in spiritual maturity?

I would welcome your prayer and involvement in this
Kingdom goal! If youd like to be more actively involved, I
encourage you to connect with Mary Graham, our Servant
Team Leader of Small Group Ministries impassioned about
helping people connect in meaningful and life-changing ways.
She and others are leading us, as a church, in becoming a
place of fertile soil! Lets join together in making Grace
UMC a stickier place to worship and serve Christ!

See you soon!
Pastor Bryan

Casual Summer Worship
We encourage members to "come as you are" for worship
during June and July! During those months our pastors and
choir will not be in robes, and all are invited to be casually
dressed.

would like to be a part, please place a check into the offering
plate made out to the church with Banner Fund noted in the
memo line. Thank you!

Please Claim Your Dishes!
Over the last several months a large
number of dishes have been left behind
after various events, and they have begun
to accumulate in the kitchen. Please take a
moment to stop by the kitchen and see if
any of them belong to you and reclaim them. Any dishes still
remaining in the kitchen by Thursday, June 26, will be given
to the youth to place in the Rummage Sale/Stuff Auction being
held on June 28 & 29. Dont find yourself in the position of
having to purchase/bid on dishes you already own in order to
get them back!

Lost & Found
The Lost & Found at Grace is located in the Collection Closet
in the hallway outside the main Sanctuary doors. The volume
of items in the Lost & Found has grown to the point of
overflowing. If you feel an item of yours may possibly be here,
please check the Lost & Found as soon as possible. Any items
remaining by Thursday, June 26, will be donated to the Youth
Rummage Sale and Stuff Auction.

Health Kits & Volunteers Needed
The UMCOR Warehouse in Decatur is
reporting a shortage of health care kits and is
asking churches for health care kit donations.
It's a great way to physically do something in
response to the recent storms. You can read more about the
need at http://www.northalabamaumc.org/news/detail/1402.
Instructions for assembling the health kits can be found at
www.umdisasterwarehouse.com/umcor-kits/74-health-kit. We
have a collection bucket for kits at the front entry way of the
church, and we will take care of making sure they get to the
warehouse. Individuals are also needed to volunteer on
Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday at the UM Disaster
Warehouse. For more information, call the UM Disaster
Warehouse at 256-341-9961.

Sunday School Attendance Records
Keeping accurate records of attendance for each Sunday School
class plays an important part in submitting yearly reports to our
Charge Conference. Over the last several months, class
attendance has not been recorded on a regular basis in some of
the adult and childrens classes. Please help us out by being
mindful of this need, and take the few moments necessary to fill
out your class attendance books. Thank you!

The Grace Youth Times

Issue #45 June 2014
Due to budget cutbacks, weve eliminated all fact checking from the Grace Youth Times. Therefore, you
may not be able to believe anything you read on this page.

GOT RUMMAGE?
HUNTSVILLE - GUMY is gearing up for their annual
Rummage Sale and Stuff Auction. The Rummage Room
upstairs in the gym is getting crowded as donators drop off
unwanted items from home for the youth to sell on
Saturday, June 28, from 6:00 am-noon. The Stuff Auction
will be the following evening, June 29, at 5:00 pm.

The youth themselves will be organizing the items, setting up
the gym, and running the stuff auction. Each student who
works will receive money in their individual account within
the youth budget that helps to offset the cost of trips and
events.

Donations can be dropped off in the Rummage Room
upstairs in the gym (marked with the GUMY logo) or by
Adams office on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

To help with bulky or heavy donations, GUMY is also
planning on pick-up days. A few students and adults will
come by to load up larger items and haul them back to the
church. There is a sign-up sheet outside the Sanctuary to
arrange a time for the youth ro come pick up your donations.
More info can be found on that form.

HUNTSVILLE Rumor has it the youth are planning some
fun times this summer, starting with Wild & Crazy Kids
Wednesday nights in June.

Each week, students will be teamed up to compete in theme
based games. The games are usually outside, messy, and high
energy.

The start time each Wednesday is 6:00 pm at Grace. Students
need to wear closed toed shoes and clothes they dont mind
getting wet or dirty. A change of clothes may be wise.

ALL PARENTS INVITED JUNE 8
HUNTSVILLE - Sunday, June 8, GUMY is inviting all youth
parents as well as any other adults who wish to join us. The
night is geared toward parents with games, activities, videos,
and discussion topic.

Youth Director Adam McNeil had this to say about the
event, Many of our parents arent really aware of how we
operate on Sunday nights. They hear about games or what
we had for dinner, maybe see some pictures posted on social
media, but most of the time they dont hear about the
discussions and lessons. This is their chance to join us, see
how we operate on Sunday nights, and just get a better feel of
what happens when their student walks into Grace every
week.

McNeil went on to say that the evening will feature a lesson
for youth and parents titled Finding 15 Minutes.

Grace Family Events

Thank You Notes!

Dearest Grace Family,

God certainly planted us in the right place when we were searching
for a new church home several years ago. We knew that it was a
special place with extraordinary people and that has been proven
over the last two months! How uplifting it is to know that we are
surrounded by your prayers, love and genuine concern. The
prayers, get well cards, 50
th
anniversary cards, posters, postcards
and cards from the children, emails, texts, Facebook messages,
videos, balloons, books, delicious meals and Steak-Out coupons
have been appreciated more than you know. We have felt the love
of Christ surrounding us from the first day we found out my
diagnosis. There were several times in the hospital that I especially
felt the presence of God as He surrounded me with your prayers
at critical times. Thank you for being such a caring and loving
Church family. As we continue our journey, we ask for your
continued prayers. You will be forever in our hearts as our dearest
brothers and sisters in Christ!

We love you,
Stacey and Roy McIntyre

Thank you everyone for all of the items given to my fellow
graduates and I. I say thank you for helping us make our
transition to college easier. I pray that God blesses us all with
bright futures and new chapters.
Sincerely Yours,
Brittany Robertson
