New member welcome
This year weve had a huge
number of new members.
Come and make them
feel welcome at the new
members evening: Sunday
25th April from 4.15pm.
The weather outside might be getting
cooler, but the Clubhouse re is on more
regularly now as we roll into autumn on
the back of record participation levels and
lots of new members enjoying the view
and the stunning sunsets.
Thanks for coming down and spending
time with us and yourfriends at the Club.
Over a hundred sailors, family and friends
have had a great weekend of sailing,
relaxing and dress-up at Raymond Island
(more on that to follow on the notice
boards and e-news). Our kayakers, motor
boat users and seafarers will soon be
making plans for next summer.
In this newsletter, you will see a wide
range off activities now taking place
on land for all ages and abilities. We
will continue to broaden the range of
activities that we offer.
Speaking of which, why not get on your
bike on the 23rd of March and join the
cycling group for a relaxed morning ride,
followed by breakfast?
News of our Club and the family values
we inspire are spreading. We are
encouraged by more and more interest
in joining the events that we offer and
things we want to do at the Club.
The Committee has been focused on our
2014 goals. Weve been progressing key
maintenance needs across: yacht xing
and tennis infrastructure, Block M tree
tidy-up, new safety speed signs, servicing
of the clubhouse furniture, replacement
blinds for the decking and many more
unseen maintenance tasks. Weve also
purchased a new trailer to assist with
tasks such as yacht transport. Many
thanks to all who have expressed an
interest in helping.
Unfortunately our application for grants
to assist with ground maintenance was
unsuccessful, but we are reviewing other
opportunities.
In the month ahead we start work with
postgraduates from the University of
Melbourne on The Way Forward a Business
Plan for the Future of the Ranelagh Club.
We are also excited to be awarding the
John McComas Memorial shield last
awarded in 1956 to our junior tennis
champions on March 30th. We are
planning for Johns family members to
present the shield to our winner. Come
and support the players.
Most signicantly, we will spend the 23rd
of March with some of our senior and
loyal Very Important Members (VIMs)
reecting and celebrating their afliation
with the Club some since 1957.
Historical memorabilia will be on display
at this invitation-only event.
Again, enjoy your Club and please provide
any comments to me, any member of
the Committee or to Erin, on how we can
meet your membership needs.

Albert Blamey, the Australian General of the
First and Second World Wars (pictured). Blamey
is said to have penned his memoirs in one of
the old Ranelagh Estate houses. Robert Menzies
(who later went on to become one of Australias
longest-serving Prime Ministers) was also a
Clubmember.

Ranelagh Yacht Squadron
ADVANCED SAILING COURSE
a great success
By Dom Jackson
The Ranelagh Yacht Squadron has put 22 sailing students through
an intensive and challenging advanced sailing course, which tested
the participants at every turn. Having to contend with factors such as
the ever-changing Melbourne weather and the Australia Day public
holiday, which extended the course by two weeks, there was great
show of dedication and concentration shown by the participants.
Having a greater number of participants than expected, it was
necessary to split the students into groups relevant to their abilities,
but it was difcult to maximise their time on the water, which is what
we as instructors want. To the students credit, they were very patient
and remained focussed throughout every activity, which helped the
situation. It is fair to say that all of the participants in this course
saw solid improvements in their sailing ability and knowledge, in all
conditions, which is a great result for us as a yacht squadron.
The success of a program such as this is simply not achievable without
the input from dedicated volunteers who put in an awesome effort
each and every week. Without drivers and helpers on our safety
boats, without helpers on the beach for rst aid and food preparation,
without our group of young assistant instructors to help pass on the
sailing knowledge, we simply cannot function as a club.
To all those who assisted in this ve week course many thanks to
you from Ben, the other instructors and myself for making this
course the best it could be.
Hopefully the participants will return to continue to sail regularly at
Ranelagh and help us to grow the club to its maximum potential.

Volunteers needed 27th April Sausage sizzle
Ranelagh Yacht Squadron are having a fund raising sausage sizzle at Bunnings on
Saturday the 27th of April. We require volunteers to man the stall from 8am5pm.
Three people must be present at all times, so we would greatly appreciate any
donation of time even in one hour blocks.
Funds raised will be used to support the development of junior sailors so that we can
maintain the viability of sailing at RYS.
Contact Gaby Ramsay on 0407 967 100 if you can help.
