PHStat2 is Windows software that assists you in learning the concepts of statistics while using Microsoft
Excel. PHStat2 allows you to perform many common types of statistical analyses while using the familiar
Microsoft Excel interface.
The rest of this document is organized into sections that will assist you in setting up and using PHStat2.

PHStat2 no longer fully supports Excel versions earlier than Excel 2003. Users of earlier Excel
versions discover that the new procedures discussed in Section 7 will not function properly.

Requirements for runnin the PHStat2 setu# #roram!
Windows user account with administrator pri5ileges. Student or faculty accounts used to login onto
networ<ed computers in academic settings typically do not ha5e this pri5ilege. "f you ha5e such an
account# as< your networ< or la$ technician for assistance.

Bou must change the Trust *enter settings to allow PHStat2 to properly function. =ollow these steps!
1. "n Excel 2++,# clic< the *ffice +utton and then clic< '(cel *#tions 9at $ottom of the >ffice
Autton menu window;. "n Excel 2+'+# clic< ,ile *#tions.

2. *lic< Trust Center in the left pane and then clic< Trust Center Settins in the right pane.

2b Confiurin '(cel 2003 Securit) for PHStat2
The Microsoft >ffice macro security le5el must $e set to &edium in order to allow PHStat2 to properly
function. >pen Microsoft Excel and select Tools &acro Securit). "n the Securit) 0e1el ta$ of the
Security dialog $ox that appears# clic< the &edium option and then clic< */.
Setting the security le5el in this dialog $ox# affects all Microsoft >ffice programs. When you are
finished using PHStat2# you can set the security le5el to Hih# for greatest security. 9"f you set the le5el to
High# remem$er to reset the le5el to Medium $efore you next open and use PHStat2.;.
"f you cannot see the Macro choice on the Tools menu# it may $e hidden from 5iew due to the way
that Microsoft >ffice is currently displaying menu choices. To dou$le:chec< this# open Microsoft Excel and
select Tools Customi2e. "n the *ustomize dialog $ox# clear 9unchec<; the &enus sho% recentl)
used commands first chec< $ox if it is chec<ed and clic< Close. *learing this chec< $ox will cause e5ery
Microsoft >ffice program to show e5ery choice on e5ery menu. 9Bou can re5erse this setting at any time.;
*learing this chec< $ox will also $e helpful when using PHStat2 as you will $e always a$le to see e5ery
choice on the PHStat menu that appears inside Excel.
3 Settin u# PHStat2
To use PHStat2# you first need to run the PHStat2 setup program to add PHStat2 to your system. Aefore
using the setup program# ma<e sure you ha5e re5iewed the details of the pre5ious two sections and ha5e
5erified that your copy of Microsoft Excel is properly configured and updated and that your system meets
all technical re)uirements listed in section '.
Ha5ing re5iewing the rest of this readme file# download the PHStat2 setup program and sa5e the file
to the folder of your choice. The PHStat2 setup program installs the PHStat2 files to your system and
adds entries in the Windows registry file for your system. The setup program also adds Des<top icons and
a Start Menu program group for PHStat2.
(un the setup program only after first logging on to Windows using a user account that include
administrator pri5ileges. 9(unning the setup program with a Windows user account that does not include
these pri5ileges will pre5ent the setup program from properly installing PHStat2.;
"f your system contains Windows 7ista# Windows ,# or certain third:party security programs# you may
see messages as<ing you to %permit& or %allow& specific system operations as the setup program
executes. "f you do not gi5e the setup program the necessary permissions# PHStat2 will not $e properly
installed on your computer.
@fter the setup completes# chec< the installation $y opening PHStat2. @ proper installation will cause
Excel to display a PHStat menu in the @dd:"ns ta$ 9Excel 2++, or Excel 2+'+; or the menu $ar 9Excel
2++.;. "f you ha5e s<ipped chec<ing for and applying necessary Excel updates# or if some of the updates
were una$le to $e applied# you may see a %*ompile Error& message that tal<s a$out a %hidden module&
when you first attempt to use PHStat2. "f this occurs# repeat the process to chec< for and update Excel.

Bou use PHStat2 $y dou$le:clic<ing the Des<top PHStat2 icon or selecting PHStat2 from the Start menu
PHStat2 program group. "f you prefer# you can use the Excel 9=ile; >pen dialog $ox to open the
PHStat2.xla file directly. >nce properly loaded# PHStat2 will add a new PHStat menu in the @dd:"ns ta$ of
Excel 2++, or Excel 2+'+ or the Excel menu $ar in Excel 2++..
When you use the correct Excel security settings 9see Section 2a or 2$;# you will see a macro 5irus
warning dialog $ox as you attempt to open PHStat2. Should this dialog $ox appear# clic< the 'nable
&acros $utton to allow PHStat2 95irus:free# as shipped; to $e opened.

6 Troubleshootin PHStat2
7Com#ile error in hidden module7 messae. "f you get an error message that mentions a compile error
in a hidden module or wor<$oo< when you start PHStat2# you copy of Excel may not $e properly
updated. *hec< for updates for your copy of Microsoft Excel at office.microsoft.com"officeu#date.

get a dialog $ox message that notes that some components failed to self:register# clic< the Continue
$utton in the dialog $ox to complete the installation. Bou may ha5e to update your Windows , and
reinstall PHStat2 at a later time.

any data necessary for the procedure has $een properly organized in your wor<sheet and that cell
ranges entered into dialog $oxes contain no empty cells. @lso re5iew your column headings 95aria$le
la$els;. Headings that are long in length or that were entered as num$ers may create unpredicta$le
pro$lems when using certain Excel functions and should $e altered. "f an %unexpected& message
appears# any wor<sheets created $y PHStat2 during the failed procedure should $e ignored or
deleted.

PHStat menu fails to o#en or fails to a##ear. Bour Excel macro security setting is incorrect. *hange
setting to Medium option as explained in Section .a or .$. ?ess li<ely# this pro$lem can also $e
caused $y certain settings in older security programs or $y other third:party >ffice or Excel macros or
add:ins that conflict with PHStat2. *hange the security program settings or temporarily disa$le the
other add:ins to permit PHStat2 to open.
