Steepness of ladder
Can you tell which one is more steep?
What your reason? How to measure the steepness?

Properties
angle xed, the ration of opposite and adjacent legs is xed
Denition (Tangent)
In a right angled triangle ABC, if acute angle A is xed, the ratio of
opposite leg and adjacent leg is xed. The xed ratio is called Tangent of
angle A, labeled as tan A.
tanA =
opposite leg of A
adjacent leg of A
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 9 Bilingual Math Solving right angled triangle 3 / 13
the larger tanA is, more steep the ladder is
Example 1
In the following two elevators, which one is more steep?
Sol: tanA =
6
8
=
3
4
, tanB =
5

13
2
5
2
=
5
12
since tanA > tanB, the rst elevators is more steep.

Exercise
(1) As in the graph, in the RT

MNP, P = 90

. Then the opposite

leg of M is , the adjacent leg of M is ,the opposite
leg of N is , the adjacent leg of N is .

(2) As in the graph,

ABC is an isosceles triangle, get the value of tan

C with the given data.

Denition (Sine and Cosine)
0 Sine of: A: ratio between the opposite leg and hypotenuse, labeled
as sin A i.e.,
sinA =
opposite leg
hypotenuse
=
a
c
0 Cosine of A: ratio between the adjacent leg and hypotenuse, labeled
as cos A i.e.,
cosA =
adjacent leg
hypotenuse
=
b
c

Example
(1) In the RT

ABC,C = 90

, AB=5, AC=2. Get the values of sin A

and cos A.
(2) In the above graph, if AB=200, sin A=0.6. What is the length of BC?
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 9 Bilingual Math Solving right angled triangle 8 / 13
Some special angles
Properties of the rulers
, ruler 1: the length of one leg is half of the length of the hypotenuse.
, ruler 2: isosceles triangle
What are the size of the angles?
30

, 45

, 60

p two elements are necessary
p at least one of them is the length of a edge
Example
In RT

ABC, given that C = 90

, a = 35, b = 28. Get the size of
