(o avoid battery acid splashing% the cell caps should be replaced but not tightened until
charging is complete. (his allows any gases formed during charging to escape. It is inevitable
that some minor escape of acid will occur during charging.
If your battery is permanently sealed it is unnecessary to carry out these checks and charging
should be discontinued when the battery reaches a 7gassing8 voltage of 9:.:;.

before making or breaking battery connections.

It is important to ensure that both crocodile clips are making good contact with their respective
terminal posts. (he battery charger is fitted with an e"ternal% reverse polarity protection fuse. If
the leads are incorrectly connected the fuse will blow. .isconnect the battery charger from the
mains and battery before replacing the fuse. 1ake sure the replacement fuse is of the same
design and rating as the one removed.

Insert the mains plug into the mains supply =@AB ;olts A* only<. 6witch on. 0our !attery
*harger should now be working and the rate of charge will be shown on the ammeter fitted on
the front of the charger. When a flat battery is initially connected to the !attery *harger the
charging rate should build up $uickly. As the battery becomes more charged the rate of charge
will drop% this is normal. (he charging current will never fall to 'ero as the charger will continue
to give a small output even when the battery is fully charged.

overheats due to overload% environment or for any other reason% charging will be interrupted%
charging will restart automatically when the charger has cooled down.
Note With a fully charged or faulty battery% virtually no charge may register on the ammeter.

Remove the battery connection last.

Inspect the li$uid levels in each cell and top up if necessary% using the correct fluid. Now push
home or tighten the caps. Any surplus fluid around the cell tops should be wiped off =this
should be done with e"treme care as it is acidic<.
If the battery has been removed for charging% replace it and re+connect the cables.

It is essential to keep your battery regularly charged up throughout the year% especially during
the winter months. In the winter the effectiveness of your car battery is reduced by the cold.
,il is thick% engines are difficult to start and the heater% windscreen wipers and lights are all
draining power. It is at this time that batteries have to be at peak power. If your battery is not
regularly maintained and kept fully charged% it can cause problems and a possible breakdown.

after several hours charging your battery is still flat% you should test the battery.
(ake hydrometer readings from each cell in the battery. If one reading is lower than the others%
this could indicate a faulty cell. (he battery will re$uire replacement if one or more cells are
faulty.

It is important to maintain the battery leads on a regular basis as loose or dirty connections on
your battery terminals may prevent the vehicle from starting. .o this by removing the leads
from the battery% cleaning the inside of each connector and the terminal posts on the battery.

distilled or ionised water. It is important to keep the acid level topped up. If necessary have it
checked by your garage.

fluid about.
