Hi Folks,
Just received an e-mail from Robert in which he asks for input in the newsletter. He asked specifically if anybody
is building A!"H#$%
&ell, # started the '() *uaker that got my interest after # saw +oyd fly his. #t seemed very gentle in the air. # fig-
ured that that is e,actly what # need after # get flying my -utterfly figured out.
After all at my flying skill level .beginning beginner/ and age .gee0er/ slow and big seems to be the ticket.
1y -utterfly at 22) span has the wings in two sections and once # started looking at the *uaker, # reali0ed that the
'() wing would never fit in my car. "hus the decision was made to modify the plans for a two section wing.
"he plans call for a 34 degree dihedral .5.4 degrees each wing/ with a straight 4) wide center section. "hat made
me think 6why not make two center sections, one to accommodate the 34 degree dihedral and one for 7 .yes 0e-
ro/ degrees). 8nce # get flying with dihedral figured out, # could change to flying flat wing and learn to do that
with the same plane.
$enius, # thought. .&e will see how smart that was when it gets in the air./
-ut # soon reali0ed it involves adding ailerons to the wing. &ell, no problem, we can do that and while # am adding
ailerons, # might as well put them in the form of strip ailerons with separate servo9s to be able to mi, them as
flaperons. :ven slower landings%%% -onus%
"his may end up to be a *uaker that can do loops and rolls. "hat calls for a very strong center spar. ;one that
too%
# can tell you now, figuring all this out makes for a looooong build time. Anyway, here are some pictures to show
my current progress.

"his is the fuse, almost ready to be covered and painted. 8ne of the wing center sections is installed on top.
"he wing is mounted with four 37-<= nylon bolts. "o prevent any warpage or slipping. # added some balsa be-
tween the stringers to give the covering something to adhere to and added a few braces here and there for tor-
sional stiffness

Another look at the fuse with one of the center sections beside it. All the electronics, including batteries, ignition
module, receiver and voltage regulator are under the cabin floor e,cept for the :agle tree flight stabili0er .yes you
can call me a sissy but as stated before, # like big and slow. 8> add easy to that./ &hich is on top of the floor.

A better look at the elevator and rudder servo9s and my flight stabili0er. "he two servo lines function to connect
the aileron servo9s that are located in the center sections. "he flight stabili0er needs to be easily accessible.

"his picture shows the wings mounted to the dihedral center section with pushrods to the ailerons.

"he wing with the straight center section. "he wing with the straight center section from the front.

"hese are the two center sections with their covers ne,t to it. "he covers are held on with two magnets and that
is a surprisingly strong hold. "here is no need for latches.

-y the way, the figures you see in the background are my audience. A chatty bunch that my wife has put togeth-
er.

# plan to install the $H $"2 gasoline engine on it and # was assured that it has sufficient power to get the ship in
the air. &ith all the mods # made to it, it comes at about a half pound heavier than the plans indicate.

8ther builds that are going on with members are from?

Jim @ingleton who Aust finished off a >adet @enior, this was one of my first planes when flew in -urlington and Aust
loved its ease of flying.

1yself and # am still finishing off the @#$ @mith 1iniplane and need to finish off a kit from H:RR :$#::R#$
called the B#""@ @B:C#A+, another biplane Aust a smaller scale. Here are a few shots of how the @mith 1iniplane is
coming along.

#9m passing along some shots of planes, both finished and almost finished. "he ;elta &ing is made from ;ollar
@tore foamboard, and was built for fellow club member Cameron @anders. He supplied the components?

- 44mm :lectric ;ucted Fan

- <4 amp :lectronic @peed Control

- = D 2 gm. micro servos

- 8range Receiver

- ot shown is the 3,'77 mah <s battery .A ano "ech delivering E4C/

F All Gp &eight of the plane, including the battery, should be around 3 lb., or (4( grams.

All components from Hobby >ing. "he specs are for those nerdy electric types out there.
Cameron and # hope to try it out on the ice soon. #9ll keep you posted.

"he other plane is a 47 or E7 year old design. #t9s a rubber band powered free flight glider, made out of balsa, and
covered in tissue, called the Javelin. All that remains is tissue covering and decals. #t9ll be around 3.4 to = o0., #
reckon, and will only be flown in the early morning or evening. $ord
