satan DISARMED AND DEFEATED

READING: Luke 4:1-13

1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he
afterward hungered.
3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of
God.
5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a
moment of time.
6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto
me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the
Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the
Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:
10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:
11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

I. WE MUST BE MORE ARMED AND MORE DANGEROUS TO satan.

A. Armed with faith.
1. Eph 1:15-23
15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,
16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and
revelation in the knowledge of him:
18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and
what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe, according to the working of his
mighty power,
20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the
heavenly places,
21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in
this world, but also in that which is to come:
22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

2. Mark 9:23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

3. 1 John 5:4-5 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that
overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that
Jesus is the Son of God?
2

4. Eph 3:14-17
14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit
in the inner man;
17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

B. Armed with courage.

1. 1 Cor 16:13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

2. Phil 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

3. 2 Tim 4:16-18 At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it
may not be laid to their charge. Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by
me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of
the mouth of the lion. And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto
his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

4. 2 Tim 2:1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

C. Armed with patience and perseverance.

1. Rom 5:3-5 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh
patience; And patience , experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the
love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

2. 1 Thess 1:2-8
2 We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers;
3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus
Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
4 Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.
5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much
assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the
Holy Ghost:
7 So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.
8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place
your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.

3. Heb 12:1-4
1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every
weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the
cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in
your minds.
4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
3
4. James 1:2-4 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the
trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and
entire, wanting nothing.

5. 2 Peter 1:5-7 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience ; and to patience godliness; And to
godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

D. Armed with prayer.

1. James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The
effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

2. Jude 20-21 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy
Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal
life.

E. Armed with the Word.

1. Isa 49:2 And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me,
and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;

2. Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword,
piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner
of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

3. Col 1:9-14
9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be
filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing
in the knowledge of God;
11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with
joyfulness;
12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in
light:
13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

4. 2 Cor 6:4-7 But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in
afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings,
in fastings; By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love
unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand
and on the left,

5. 2 Cor 10:4-5 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling
down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against
the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

6. Rev 19:13-16
13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and
clean.
4
15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them
with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
7. Rev 12:10-11
10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our
God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our
God day and night.
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not
their lives unto the death.

II. WE MUST BE ARMORED

A. God provides the armor. We must put it on.
1. Rom 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness,
and let us put on the armour of light.

2. 1 Thess 5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and
for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

Eph 6:10-20
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of
the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and
having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all
perseverance and supplication for all saints;
19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the
mystery of the gospel,
20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
