"Online, no-wait Secretary of State" improving convenience
LANSING, Mich. The Michigan Secretary of State's online services at, which
provides 24/7 access to the most-popular services, recently marked its five millionth successful
transaction, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson announced today.
"The people of Michigan are the real winners here," said Johnson. "On the day
went live, we tripled our online offerings. Since that time, millions of people have accessed our most
popular services without having to drive to their local branch office, park their car and wait in line.
And it's shortened the lines for people who want or need to visit us in person."
Johnson credited cooperation between dedicated Secretary of State staff members, Gov. Rick
Snyder and his IT leaders with getting the longtime project launched in October 2011.
Using, most customers can:
Change their address
Obtain a duplicate vehicle registration
Renew license plates/tabs
Renew or replace a standard driver's license
Renew or replace a state ID
Renew watercraft registrations
Order a replacement title
Sign up on Michigan's Organ Donor Registry
Johnson said ExpressSOS's Print 'N Go feature is extremely popular for people who tend to wait
until the last minute or their birthdays to get their license plate tabs. Customers can buy their tabs
online, print out a receipt and carry that with them as proof-of-purchase until their tabs arrive in the
Every year, about 10 million people visit a Secretary of State office, but most customers are only
required to visit in person once every eight years to have a new driver's license or state ID card
photo taken. In 2013, 4.8 million people visited a branch office to get their license plate tabs and
about 620,000 visited a branch office to change their address.

Under Johnson's leadership, the Michigan Secretary of State's office has made several changes to
improve customer service, including the new MI-Time Line system in 10 of the Secretary of State's
busiest branch offices. The line-management system allows customers to check into line via phone
or computer and hold their place in line electronically. Customers can stay home or run errands
while they wait and the system will text or call them when it's almost their turn at the branch office.
