988F Series II Load and
Carry Arrangement
Large Wheel Loader Custom Products now offers two 988F
Series II Load and Carry arrangements with many new features to
enhance operator comfort and increase total productivity. Both of
the Load and Carry arrangements meet specific customer needs.
1. STIC Control Arrangement: Recommended for short haul,
part-time load and carry applications.
430 Flywheel Horsepower (321 kW)
- Up from 415 hp (310 kW)
STIC Control System(Steering and Transmission
Integrated Controls)
- Replaces the steering wheel
- Uses a single controller for both steering and
transmission control
- Reduces operator fatigue
Lock-up Clutch Torque Converter
- On/off switch on the dash, for conventional torque
converter or lock-up clutch
- At travel speeds (1,500 rpm or more), it allows
the machine to run in direct drive for greater fuel
efficiency
- Direct drive (lock-up) allows 15 percent more
run-out speed in 4th gear (up to 25 mph)
Ride Control
- Improves operator ride and comfort
- Reduces bucket spillage
- Allows for high speed load and carry
- Improves cycle times
- Improves machine balance and ride when using large
buckets at high speed.
Smaller Hydraulic Pump
- Improves rimpull on ramps and grades while lifting
the bucket
2. Auto-shift Arrangement: Recommended for long haul
(350-650 ft.), full time load and carry applications.
Same as the STIC Control arrangements except for
steering wheel and Auto-shift.
Auto-shift Transmission
- Switch for Auto-shift/Lock-up or Conventional Torque
Converter Mode.
- Auto-shift 2nd-4th gears, when Auto-shift/Lock-up
engaged.
- Quick gear kickdown button, allows operator to downshift
quickly and shift from 2nd to 1st when loading
- Automatic up-shift (1st forward to 2nd reverse) when
shifting into reverse when in Auto-shift mode
- Twist shift handle for upper gear selection and manual
shifting

Improvements Both arrangements are recommended for load and carry applications.
They are not recommended for full time truck loading.
The 988F Series II Load and Carry arrangement includes all of the
improvements introduced on the standard 988F Series II wheel
loader. The following list is a brief summary of the highlights.
Refer to salesgram number TEKQ4022 for details on the
improvements between the 988F and 988F Series II wheel loaders.
Performance and Operation
Cat 3408E direct injection, turbocharged and aftercooled
diesel engine with HEUI (Hydraulic actuated, Electronically
controlled, Unit Injected) fuel system increases flywheel power
to 430 hp (321 kW).
The HEUI fuel system is controlled by an ADEM (Advanced
Diesel Engine Management) ECM (Electronic Control Module)
for more precise fuel injection timing, pressure and duration at
every speed and load point. The result is improved fuel economy,
faster response and lower emissions.
The ECM provides electronic speed governing and is adjustment
free. The ECM shares data through the Cat Data Link to provide
data to the monitoring system, to integrate with the transmission
control for optimal machine performance, and to provide an
interface for troubleshooting by technicians.
The 3408E features several durability improvements including
aluminum alloy pistons, larger capacity engine oil pump,
improved coolant passages in the block and heads, chrome
plated intake and exhaust valves, and new turbochargers with
improved bearings.
The multi-row modular radiator with remote mounted hydraulic
fan provide high-capacity cooling and lower operator/spectator
sound levels.
Bucket ranges from 7.8 to 9.0 cubic yards
(6.0 to 6.9 cubic meters).
Full turn static tipping load increased by 8 percent over 988F.
Lock-up torque converter increasing rimpull in upper speed
ranges for faster cycle times, fuel efficiency and improved
gradeability when loaded. This clutch automatically engages
when the machine reaches a given speed in each gear. When
a shift occurs, the lock-up clutch disengages until the machine
reaches the set speed in the next gear, then re-engages.

Serviceability
Upper engine enclosure doors, hinged lower engine access
doors, hinged radiator clean out doors, and a hinged radiator
grill all combine to provide easy access to major components.
Axle shaft brakes, similar to those on the 990 wheel loader,
replace the oil disc brakes found on the 988F. The new axle shaft
brakes are fully hydraulic, seal from contaminants and never
need adjustment. Cooling oil contained in the axle housing is
carried by grooves in the face of the disc to provide cooling
even when the brake is applied.
On conventional brake designs, it is necessary to break the final
drive to service the brakes. With the axle shaft brake, the final
drive and hub are removed intact. This exposed the brake discs,
allowing easy replacement. When the discs are in, simply
replace the hub and final drive assembly.

Operator's Station
The 988F Series II improves the operators station by reducing
the sound level, increasing the viewing area and improving the
interior environment. Viewing area is increased by adding more
glass area to the lower part of the cab. The interior cab environment
is modernized with a gray interior color scheme. Other operator
oriented enhancements include:
Ether Aid Automatic actuation controlled by operators
choice of ADEM or Manual Actuation.
Throttle Lock Presets the engine speed to enhance
operator control of the machine for high
production. The rocker switch located right
below the CMS panel turns the system on
and off. The two buttons right in front of
the right arm rest sets and resumes the
engine speed. The first button is to set
and reduce the rpm. The throttle lock can
be shut off by pressing the brake pedal.
Previous engine speed may be resumed
by the resume button and this button also
adjusts speed upward in 50 rpm increments.
Axle Temp Sensor Detects and advises the operator of
excessive axle oil temperature.
CMS Software changes to improve diagnostic
capability.
Electrical System MPC (Multi Process Controller) 10
is retained but the software changes
were made for improved flexibility
of the machine.
- Wiring harnesses changes to improve
the reliability and durability
- New & additional circuits
- ISO Standard wiring
Steering System Steering hydraulic system redesigned
to improve efficiency and reduce power
requirement, improving fuel efficiency.

Computerized Monitoring System(CMS)
Three warning system and four diagnostic modes for easy system
troubleshooting and minimum downtime. Vacuum fluorescent
display provides easy reading in direct sunlight or at night.
Payload Monitor
An improved PCS II (Payload Control System) replaces the
previous PMS (Payload Measuring System). This system gives the
operator the ability to measure payload on-the-go with an accuracy
of 2%. PCS II compared to PMS has improved reliability,
durability, and functionality including download capability.
