My film report
Ctk production have been working hard into creating a film which we think will attract our target
audience, we have spent a long time doing different type of research to find out what will make our
film which will stand out from others. This short film that is in pre-production I believe will be a box
office success as I think it will suits my targeted audience. I am making this report to persuade the
producers that our film isnt just any film, but it is unique and different to any other film that has
been made before. This Film, is better suited to all people who are a young age as they can directly
relate back to this film and can finally as if theyre lives are being presented to the public but in a
non-stereotype way. This Film is not like any other romance because it also features drama and
comedy. You can say this film is a Hybrid genre which I think a number of romance films make stand
out from others, for this type of film and this is what makes this film very different to others. I know
that this film is going to be a success as Ctk productions has carried out significant primary and
secondary research into this film just to make sure that the film we are making is of first class
quality. We have also identified the demographics and psychographics of the target audience which
we are trying to reach I will show this in this report and illustrate just how important they are to the
making of our film.
Research
The research I carried out in relation to the production of my film, I took out primary and secondary
research to help with my views and opinions on how it could entertain my targeted audience and
how my results will help me build on improving my film and make it more creative towards them.
Secondary research
After going into planning for our film we looked at a number of different films that might be similar
to our film and we found; Signs, Coming to America and Seconds. These films are similar to my film
as they all have a twist which creates the story and makes I entertaining for the targeted audience.
The film is a romantic drama like mine and it helps me understand what to add in my film to make it
like the examples. The montages in seconds is also a strong point we will be using in our film to make
it more creative to our targeted audience seconds was given high ratings as a short film by the BBC
so Ill be hoping to make my film a success like how seconds has become.
The reason I think that the film that Im making is similar to Signs is because like my character is my
film he has bad luck in his life with girl until one day he finds a girl that he thinks that he will have a
chance with and both of the twist are similar because he thinks that he has lost the girl he was
talking to until he sees that she had been promoted and then he sees her in another office and they
finally meet each other at the end. This film was rated highly by BBC short films because a number of
people rated it 5 stars so this shows. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxLkp6Jpp70

The second film I believe is in comparison to my film is Coming to America in which Eddie Murphy
stars again this film includes comedy, romance and a twist to add effect to the story and o leave the
audience thinking what is going to happen next? This film was also a success as the twist in it makes
it more entertaining to the audience and engages them into the story which I would like to do with
my film.
The box office for this film was $39 million as the budget was $288,752,301 this film has also
inspired me as it suits my creative ideas and helps me build on ideas for my film. The Budget for the
film was around about $42 million as the box office for the film was $131,052,444 is also received a
mixed of critical reviews saying that the film was predictable but still entertaining in my film I will be
trying to catch the audience by surprise my audience and leave them shocked.
The two pictures; one
shows how popular these film were worldwide and the other one shows how much money the films
made and how popular they are around the world and it shows that the film was most popular
outside of the USA and it made 55.6% of its money in foreign countries.
The reviews I researched in IMDB show that many people enjoyed the film.

Here is a list of award and nomination they were put up for and those that they won.

The third film that is in comparisons to my film is Seconds which is a BBC short film which gave me
ideas on how I could engage the audience t my film in a matter of minutes but still leave my
audience entertained about watching it. The montage shown in this short film is one of my first ideas
that I would like to add in my film to help make my film more creative and suite the narrative that I
wish to use. Watching this film repeatedly help me build on ideas I can use for my narrative that
could add a montage on it and the romance added in it suits my style as I will be adding romance
into my film this is a clip of the short film to show my inspiration of how it gave me creative ideas.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdymCQ5PXrs
As well as being popular on BBC short films this
film is also popular worldwide by it having 1,360,229 views on youtube shows how popular it is
around the world and that if a film similar to mine can do this so can mine.

Primary research
Primary research was a key part to help my film in production because it helps me get a general idea
of what my audience will want to see, find entertaining and will look out for. This helpThis helps me
change ideas for my film and added new twist to make my audience find my film more entertaining.
I carried out significant amounts of primary research, in order to make sure that we are making no
mistakes with our film. We each did a significant portion of primary research; my role was to ask
questions over social networks such as twitter and so on. This one of the most effective ways of
gathering information as it is fast, reliable and you are able to ask more people questions. I will do
analysis of some of the information that we had gathered and explain after why we asked them
questions; I asked the same questions to 15 people over whatsapp. It was an even mix of males and
females; everyone was under the age of 21.
Question; What makes our film Unique?
Answer ; 8 people said it was realistic and can somehow relate to it, 4 people said it looks
entertaining and fun to watch and 3 people said it is not their type of film genre. This helped us in
identifying what makes our film such a unique one and what attributes we should focus most on, to
make the film even more unique and appeal to more of the target audience.
Question ; What more could we improve on the film?
Answer; 4 people said nothing else should be changed; it is as good as it is, 15 people said add more
locations and vary it a bit more, in order to make it more exciting for the viewer.
Question; How do you think we can appeal to our target audience?
Answer; Portray it as a high school crush, show that its real college life, a bubble will appear on top
of his head when he is having a montage and he tapped to be woken up.
Question; what; What would you like to see in our film?
Answer; Kiss, romance, comedy, as she walking away she gives the note to the boy, and part of it
should be filmed at night time.
Question; How long should our film be?
Answer; 4; 4-6 min.
Question; What type of characters would you like to see in our film?
Answers; They want to see the main girl looking like one of the popular girl and her original
boyfriend as a natural tall muscular boy and the boy who has the montage to be like a short skinny
boy who in reality will have no chance with her.
Question, Other than our twist what other one would you have?
Answer; They said if at first our twist doesnt work we could add the twist that as she is giving the
boy her number her boyfriend sees this happening
Ladi Williams

Question; Where do you think we should set our film?
Answer; Since its going to be a montage they said we should have it in a number of different places.
After Doing this I carried out a I decided to carry out aquestionnaire.

This is what I received from the people I asked when I carried out my questionnaire:

This shows the qualitative questions
I asked Im focus group and targeted
audience to help build ideas on
creating my film and what I could

question so I can gather the
feedback to improve my film.
These results help me now what
genre my target audience enjoys
watching will as you can see its
mainly like to see in my film as seen
in the chart romance and comedy
tend to be most popular in my film
which both genres I will be adding
them into my film to make it

already making a romantic film Ill
also be adding a bit of comedy to
get a wider range of people wanting
to watch my film.

We also learnt;

Who is my target audience?
Age: As we carried out surveys, questionnaires and focus groups it became apparent to us that 12-19
year olds are the ones that seem to enjoy the film the most and are the ones that gave much more
positive feedback, showing us that they are more anticipating of the short films release. The target
audience is appropriate for our film as by the age of 15, they are starting to finally get more mature
and starting to think more like young adults.

Race: Our Film is aimed and suitable for every race out there as every single race can relate to this
film whether youre black, white, Chinese it doesnt matter. We made this film so every person is
able to relate to this film even they think they have nothing in common to the film. Because no
matter whom you are you will be able to relate to this or understand the message.
Then I wanted to aim my film at both gender thats why I asked a number of males and females what
films they are interested in so I can make a film or the male and female audience.
What makes my film different/unique?
My film features 6 characters but there are only 2 main characters who are going to be the main
ones. Even though we do not have a lot of characters we built a story line around the life that college
students are living so they will be able to instantly engage with it target audience. I believe my
storyline is unique because there is no film like this even though we got ideas from certain film we
improved it and we added to twist to our film so like more films, our viewers will not know what to
expect when they are watching our film. We also end our film with an open narrative so that means
that we are giving our viewers the chance to image how they want things to go from then on. But
the thing that we done that will add a bit of comedy to the twist was add binary opposite with the
two main characters by one being a popular girl that all the boys want and the other being an ugly
loser that no girls would go out with.
The film will need to be different to every other film to be successful thats why I think that you
should make our film Lil did they know this film will get the younger viewers watching it because
they can relate and its modern. Because this is a short film we wont need as much money as if we
were making a box office film, the reason we want this film to be made is because Ive looked at a
number of films that is similar to mine and Ill be speaking about how successful they were, so this
showed that my has potential to be very popular. Ive also carried out a number of questionnaire
and focus group to be able to interact with my target audience.
Personnel needed for production
Director- this is one of the most important person in the team. They must be able to visualise the
whole end production, be able to work through the whole film visualising each step, they must be
organised and always on track. The director must be able to pay close attention to detail, they must
be able to direct each and every one single member of the production correctly, meaning they must
be able to understand each job role everyone has and be able to distribute task to the correct crew
member.
Another key person is the Producer the producer is the very start of the production, they are the
person that had thought of the idea of the film and visualises everything, apart from visualising, they
must be able to put everything into motion and be able to finance the whole production. The
producer is someone who decides whether the film is going to be made or not, they will be the
person who gambles with putting money together or using their own money to start the beginning of
the production off, start the pre-production of the film. The producer also has the most say in the
production of they decide to get involved, they overlook everything in the production and change
what they feel is right.
Ladi Williams

Actors/Actresses or Talent- these are the main people to bring the life into films, they must be able
to take on different roles, become a new person each time and stay in that role over periods of time.
They must be familiar with scripts, storyline and be able to listen well and work on feedback quickly;
they must be able to listen to want the director says and work on it, be able to change/tweak certain
features about themselves being this new character and be able to keep the rest the same. A talent
is someone who can physically, emotionally and mentally change themselves to fit into the new
character the director wants and needs them to be.
Runners runners are usually people who help around the production, doing smaller tasks such as
making people tea or finding costumes and props for scenes, filing documents and doing research.
Runners generally help different sections where needed and do most of the background tasks.
Camera Man (optional) Assistant Cameraman the camera man will be in-charge of the basics,
recording the footage during the production part of the film, an effective camera man is someone
who would go over the film idea and script for example so he or she is familiar with the story line so
recording footage will be much easier and get done quicker because the camera man will know what
scene are being done, meaning he will know what kind of shot or take they will need to do,
becoming more individual and wouldnt need so much assistants or direction from the director. The
Assistant camera man could also help with recording footage, maybe from a different angle and
would also be in-charge of things like sorting the files in the appropriate places; computers etc. and
are in charge of stuff like rushes sheets, recording a log of what footages have been shot already.
Sound Engineers (Boom Operators) the sound engineers will be in charge of the sound of the
footages, recording things like vocals/ dialogue; going out to record things like sound effects.
Example of this is in animation films, sound engineers would go out to recreate sounds the audience
will hear in an animation such as birds chirping and flying or a sound of cars driving pass. The same
principles apply when making normal films, if things like car sounds need to be added in, sound
engineers would go out to recreate the sound, then hand the sounds over to the editor who will then
piece together each sound to match the footages. Specialist sound engineers will also work with the
editors and director and work on things like non-diegetic music, music/sound only the audience can
hear and not the actors. These kind of sounds/music are used for specific special reasons like give
the film a sense of tension or danger and overall making the film more better by adding correct
matching sounds and music, during a fight scene they could research into music that is fast, powerful
to make the fight scene more tensed, exciting and dangerous.
Light specialist people who work on creating the film through lighting. On set specialist that knows
the story and can visualise each scene, they produce each set's mood and atmosphere by how bright
or dark the lighting is, what colour is used. Light specialist set up lights in ways that they can make an
object seem either more important than what it is or less important, the use of shadowing certain
parts of the scene and using the light to direct the audience to show them what they need to focus
on firstly.
Set Designer- also usually works with the light specialist, the set designer is also another creative
visual person, they must be able to read the script, understand the storyline and visualise each scene
separately. Set designers have to be able to visualise the most obvious objects to the smallest details
and have everything in the set match what the scene is about, what the character is like as a person,
for example the set designer must be able to describe a person's lifestyle just by how his or hers
Ladi Williams

room is set, having a messy room where there is a lot of clothes laying around, shows audience that
the person is disorganised, unhygienic and indecisive; being able to describe things in this manner,
without physically having to tell the audience through the use of communication.
Editor they will be the people at the post-production that will finalise the film, edit together all the
footages, take out what is not needed, what is needed, then match the correct sounds to them, so
handling tasks like syncing the vocals/dialogue to the footage and then adding in the special effects
and transitions, fade away, cuts, wipes.
Recommendation
I look at facts and figures because I think logically that explains the success of a film and how well its
done; that could cover the features of pre-production and post-production etc. These types of
qualitative and quantitative information will get me far into what I want to research about, I think
that way I made the information reliable and clear.
I believe my film will be successful, due to the fact it has an easy and understanding storyline which
the audience can relate to. The promotion of film can be display those ways.
1. YouTube- You can sign up to a YouTube account and search for the partners programme; there
you can attach a viral short film online. Many users on YouTube have earned millions from just there
ads on the site. This will also be on bbc because that a well-known place that puts up short films.
2. Promotion- You can have a team help you promote the short film you have made by making
services that people will usually provide to you. You negotiate different dealings with different
people that way you have a solid chance of getting the film seen. Well make the aware of this by
making adverts and posters and putting them around colleges to get our target audience aware of
what it is and where they can watch it.
USP- unique selling point
The film we are making has many unique selling points and is different to any other film out there;
this film is not made just purely for entertaining purposes but is made for people to relate to. This
film addresses to something that everybody can relate to they will either know someone who has
been involved with this or knows someone this has happened to. This film says a thousand words
just by it and addresses and brings humour to the romance side. This film is a realistic approach to
girls and friendships and what a number of boys go through on the daily basis which is all
intertwined between each other; there is no other film like this on the market which is this down-to-
earth while still creating that entertaining experience. All the actors we have hired in the film are
from London themselves and we try to hire actors who have been through a somewhat similar
situation as our film to make it even more appealing and realistic to the audience.
We wanted to add a boyfriend to the film in order for the twist to work well and the advantage of
having a girls in the short film is that the film will be able to appeal to girls more, making it more
watchable for both genders and it will be easy for the audience to understand the twist in the film
again making it more relatable to the audience. This film is destined to be great and the budget for
this short film may be high especially for this type of film however this is due to the intriguing crew
list, equipment and more.
Conclusion
Ladi Williams

To conclude my report, I think that by making a few slight changes, I think that my short film will be
successful. The reason why I say this is mainly looking at the primary research I conducted; most of
the results I had gotten back all had liked my idea of the film and had general positive feedback
about it, and all I needed to focus on and act upon are making the film more relate-able to the focus
group, which they all said that the main way in doing this is by making the characters the same age
as the target audience so it is easier for them to relate to the characters. Overall the all the research
that I gathered was interesting because they helped my understand what to do to make a successful
short film. I found out the key things Im going to need to do to make my film stand out to my target
audience, the best way of doing this is to make my film relatable to my target audience, this will be
done by making them feel as if the film is about there life or someone they know.
My target audience have to feel sympathy and compassion towards the characters at every
stage of the scene. Therefore, I will make sure that the audience are able to form a bond
with the characters and feel as if they were part of the characters life. Through my research,
I believe that my film can be successful and therefore should be produced. This is because of
the two types of primary research I have undertaken, questionnaire and focus group.
My primary research has helped me understand how Ill be able to do this. The research that showed
that I can do this is the focus group because I was talking to them they were able to tell me the parts
that wouldnt happen in an average college, so they helped me make changes to the film. But the
questionnaire also gave me an idea of what they like to see and how they enjoyed the films that
were similar to mine and they also gave me an understanding of what they like to see in their films.
After doing these things it helped me understand what to add to my film so once had done these
things it help me understand what changes I will need to do in my film. When we first reviewed our
product with the focus group we found that we received some negative feedback regarding our So
once I had my first focus group they told me that there was no twtwist in my film and that its tothe
twist we had at the time to predictable and straight forward so instead of having a girl not wanting
the boy because she has a man we needed to make it something that the audience wouldnt expect
so we I decided to make it seem to the audience that the girl was still interested in the boy this was
shown by the Stephanie giving her number to the Carl once she had gone away we show this by the
note that tiffany gave to carl at the end.
We then changed the look of our character the original was supposed to be a short, ugly loser who
nobody would expect to get this girl but our focus group said that this being a montage wouldnt be
a shock so we knew that we had to make a difference to the appearance to the boy it will be more of
a twist if we were to make it a normal guy because we they audience find out it was a montage they
wouldnt image this character to do this because they will think he has more courage to talk to her
instead of imaging he is.
The last point our focus group told us that if we are going to have a montage we are going to need to
have it a number of different places to make it look like theyve been going to another of place at
different times because our originally ideas of our montage was all generally made in college but
once we had our feedback we needed to make sure that we had our montage in different place and
they are wearing different clothes to make it seem that its happening time, we were also going to
show some shoots when it is raining and sunny to show different weather climates.
Ladi Williams

By looking at researches on the BBFC website, I released that my film rating should be aged 12, not
15, because there is no violence and there isn't going to be any strong language. So, that is
something that I changed to not confuse the audience with the age rating and the film script.

After I had done my research I had a number of changes to my film to make it appeal to my audience
more the first change I made to my film was instead of making a tiffany single I changed it to adding
a twist that she has a boyfriend who we find out about at the end of the film, so we find out that she
was never looking at him instead she was looking at her boyfriend. Then we made another change
that when we originally thought of our ideas our montage was all generally made in college but once
we had our feedback we needed to make sure that we had our montage in different place and they
are wearing different clothes to make it seem that its happening time, we were also going to show
some shoots when it is raining and sunny to show different weather climates. Another change we
made was that in the end instead of us thinking that Carl comes out with nothing we included
another twist because our original idea was to straight forward, so we added the added of once
Stephanie goes with her boyfriend one of her friends gives a paper of her number on it. In my
opinion I thought that finding out the information I need for my primary research was better than
the secondary research, but I needed to make sure that information I got back was concrete and
actually means something, that way I can correlate my work with the film itself and make it appeal
to the target audience I conjured up.
My secondary research also gave me an understanding of what goes into making a film and there is a
lot of money and time spent on making a short film. But a successful film will need to have a post-
production which will be done by looking for; finance timescale, personnel, facilities, materials,
contributors, locations, Codes of practice and regulations. This is something all types of films will
need to have done to make a film and the secondary research gave me an understanding of what
this is and how it will help me make a successful film. The secondary research I carried out also gave
me an understanding of the films that mine are similar to and what made them so successful, this
also gave me an understanding of how successful my film has potential to be if I carry it out well
then my film could be a success. The secondary research also helped me make changes to my film
because before I watched seconds I wasnt going to add a montage but after watching it helped me
understand the effect of a montage and how it helps show how a relationship is developing in a film,
the idea that the film signs gave me was that by adding a twist that hope is gone in their relationship
and something brings the hope back that the relationship will continue.
Once I had done my secondary research it gave the me the idea to add a montage to my film
because of the film seconds this was something that wasnt in a number of films and what made the
film stand out. Another change I made was instead of making it a romantic drama we also added the
effect of comedy to it as well, because this was the reason coming to America was such a big hit the
comedy drew more people in it.

A boy called Carl doesnt have much luck with girls but he sees a girl named Tiffany smiling at him
and he thinks his luck has changed with girls so he get some confidence to talk to her. They start
talking more and more then they start going out on a dates. Then we show them going out for
months and them celebrating different holidays, but then his friends slaps him to bring him back to
reality to find out she wasnt smiling at him she was smiling at her boyfriend. As he watches her walk
away with her boyfriend he gets an unexpected tap on his shoulder, one of Tiffany's friend gives him
a note. Once she walks away he opens it and sees Tiffany's number on it.

While typing up my report I had decided to track my grammar and spelling with track changer, a
feature on Microsoft word. Using track changer I can see where I had made a mistake in my spelling
or if I had misused or forgotten punctuation.

This shows my essay and it shows how I
have corrected them to improve it. I
think that this is important to know
because it shows how my work is
