Letter from the Principal

Dear Ben Lippen High School Families,

It is hard to believe that summer has already returned!

As many of us contemplate how we will use our summer break - and some of us reminisce
remembering summer breaks from long ago - lets remember Jesus words, referencing himself,
in Mark 10:45: even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life
as a ransom for many (NIV). I am confident that over the course of this summer Ben Lippen
students will bless many individuals and organizations as they find ways to serve in their
families, neighborhoods, churches, jobs, and in the larger community. I look forward to hearing
in August how students have imitated Jesus by using their summer to serve for the glory of God!

Please take the time to read through the information in this packet. We hope the
information is helpful to you. Do not hesitate to contact the office this summer if you need
clarification or further information as the new school year approaches!

Thank you for choosing Ben Lippen as your high school. I take seriously the trust and
investment you place in us and pray that you grow closer to God as a result of your time at Ben
Lippen School.

In Messiah,

L. Emery Nickerson II, M.Ed.
High School Principal

Camp Ben Lippen Permission Form

Friday, August 15, 2014
8 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Camp Ben Lippen is a one-day high school retreat near the beginning of the 2014-2015 school
year. Theme and direction for the school year will be established, advising groups will bond, and
students will have opportunities to grow in leadership and community.

Student attendance is expected and required.

My child, ________________________________________ (full name) in grade _________ has
my permission to participate in Camp Ben Lippen on August 15, 2014. I understand my student
may be playing field games and may have opportunities to participate in a variety of athletic and
other activities. I understand that there are inherent risks in all activities and that injuries can
occur. I agree not to hold Ben Lippen School or any of its agents, members, employees, or
affiliate organizations responsible in the event of an accident or injury. I understand that this
form is considered to be a binding contract.

Additionally, in case of an emergency during this event or at another time during the school
year, I have reviewed and updated the Student Medical and Emergency Contact Form in
RenWeb this summer between June 1 and August 1, 2014. [Note: Please click on the Save
tab at the bottom of the RenWeb form even if you do not make any changes in order to record
that you have accessed the form to check for needed changes.]

Special Interest Activities and Teams

In addition to numerous athletic teams, there are a number of academic teams and
organizations that interested students may join. All Ben Lippen students are strongly
encouraged to explore their interests, hone their skills, try new experiences, and follow their
passions on a Ben Lippen team or organization each semester.

The groups listed below generally meet outside classroom hours, require a commitment, and
may require students to cover some or all of the financial cost of participating in
activities. Please contact the sponsoring faculty member to express interest or for more
information. If you do not see your particular area of interest listed below but would be
interested in helping to lead in that area, please contact a faculty member that you think may be
willing to sponsor a group matching your interests and/or contact Mr. Nickerson directly
(Emery.Nickerson@BenLippen.com).

International Recruiting Trip 2014-2015

For each of the past three years, Mr. Nickerson has traveled to Asia visiting families of current
Ben Lippen international students and spreading the word about Ben Lippen School to potential
international students and their families. If you are a student and/or parent who might be
interested in traveling with Mr. Nickerson in a small group this coming fall (specific dates
and approximate cost soon to be determined) for a sight-seeing, culture-experiencing,
and recruiting adventure across at least three countries, please contact him at
Emery.Nickerson@BenLippen.com. Please note that eating deep fried insects and/or other
foods you may not recognize, an ability to persevere when tired/hot/cold, extreme flexibility, and
a supernaturally positive attitude are likely to be required. Please also note that simply
expressing interest does not guarantee inclusion. Many factors, including grades, age/seniority,
class schedule, behavior records, and a preference for a small group size will be taken into
consideration in selection of team members.

Intercultural Opportunities

Approximately 75% of Ben Lippen High School students are American students, and about 25%
are international students from all over the world. If your family has an interest in expanding its
own cultural horizon by providing a home away from home, an American cultural experience -
even as simple as an evening dinner with your family, opportunities to practice English, tutoring,
and/or offering a helping hand to a Ben Lippen international student, we would love to partner
with you in this way.

Every year Ben Lippen places the majority of its international students in an American homestay
for Thanksgiving Break, Christmas Break, and Spring Break. Ben Lippen families are highly
preferred. Please consider adopting an international student over breaks for an entire year, or
even for the entire time they study at Ben Lippen. A small daily stipend is provided to cover
food, travel, and living costs. In order to host a student overnight, all members of the household
over 18 years of age must have completed the Volunteer Background Check process. Summer
is a wonderful season to complete this process!

Families who have an interest in hosting a student in their home throughout the school year (not
just during breaks) are also needed. A stipend is provided to cover the students living
expenses. There are requirements in addition to the Volunteer Background Check process.

Please contact Debbie Austin (Debbie.Austin@BenLippen.com) or Eric Needham
(Eric.Needham@BenLippen.com) in the Boarding Program Office if you are interested in any of
the above opportunities or for more information.

Student Life Handbook Adjustments

The 2014-2015 Ben Lippen High School Student Life Handbook (available at
www.benlippen.com/academics/high-school/high-school-handbook) includes several
changes. All students and parents should read the handbook on an annual basis. Most of the
changes in the 2014-2015 handbook that are substantive in nature are briefly described below,
but the handbook contains additional information.

A statement on bullying is now included within the harassment policy. Bullying has
never been acceptable at Ben Lippen, but a formal stance on the issue was lacking.
Dancing guidelines are given for school functions allowing modest dancing.
Allowable absences before potential loss of credit is increased from 3 per semester to
4 per semester.
Freshmen with at least a 99% in a course and sophomores with at least a 97% in a
course are allowed to exempt their semester exam with teacher approval. This
expands the former exam exemption guidelines for juniors and seniors.
The cheating policy is clarified to address the issue of collaboration and emphasize
the importance of personal integrity in an academic setting.
The Campus Wear Policy that was created/modified by a committee during the course
of the 2013-2014 school year and implemented mid-year is incorporated into the 2014-
2015 handbook. Additionally, Candlelight and Graduation dress expectations are
included.
While graduation requirements and academic awards for the class of 2015 are not
modified, the board approved some changes to the graduation requirements and honors
at graduation for the classes of 2016 and beyond. In 2016 and beyond, a College Prep
Diploma with Honors Distinction in addition to our current College Prep Diploma will
be available for students meeting an array of higher academic requirements, and a
valedictorian and salutatorian will be honored at graduation. Additionally, in 2016 and
beyond, the Junior Seminar course will not be a graduation requirement, though some
important components of the Junior Seminar course will still be required of all students
through the Guidance Office.
Serving in a church is now included as an option for completing the 30 required Senior
Community Service Hours.
Guidelines for receiving classroom accommodations through the Guidance Office under
a Ben Lippen Accommodation Plan or on standardized tests are listed.

The High School Handbook Commitment Form (the last page of the handbook) is slightly
expanded. This page is required to be printed, initialed/signed, and turned in at the high
school office before the end of the first week of classes. As noted on the form, the 2014-
2015 Ben Lippen High School Student Life Handbook should be read in its entirety before
signing the commitment.

9

Summer Reading Requirements

All Ben Lippen high school students participate in a Summer Reading Book Club
focused on reading and interacting with a book that they will enjoy. Directions have been
provided to students but are also included in this packet. The goal of the program is not simply
reading in preparation for specific material that will be covered in their English classes in
August. Rather, each high school teacher - teachers from all academic disciplines - sponsors a
book that students may sign up to read, and students interact over the summer in an online
discussion group moderated by the faculty member.

Certain advanced placement (AP) courses require summer reading (in addition to Summer
Reading Book Club participation). Courses requiring summer reading are listed below:

AP English Literature & Composition:
Students must read How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster.
Students may skip chapters 16-17.

AP English Language & Composition:
Students must choose one of the following two spiritual memoirs.
A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller
Angry Conversations with God by Susan Isaacs

Additionally, within the first two weeks of school students will be required to read one of
the following two secular memoirs. Students are strongly encouraged to choose one and
begin reading before the onslaught of schoolwork in August.
A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway
Hunger of Memory by Richard Rodriguez

AP Spanish/Spanish IV:
Students must read Cenando con Jess by Jess Adrin Romero before returning to
school in August. The book can be purchased on Amazon, and the paper copy is
preferred over the Kindle edition so students can mark in it. Students should also join the
AP Spanish Schoology Summer Reading Course (Code: GVW64-8JC9Q).

10

Summer Reading Book Club Instructions

The required Summer Reading Book Club grade will count as a first quarter project grade in
each English class next year (the project category is worth 20 percent). Students who are not
taking an English class at BLS next year will be assessed in another class.

Each student should have received an email containing the title and author of their assigned
book for summer reading. From the chart provided elsewhere in this packet, each student
should use the course code associated with that book to sign up for the correct course on
Schoology.

Each student must complete two sets of discussion questions. The first set is due by June 30
and the second is due by July 31. Responses will be graded on the following scale:

5 - Insightful, well-developed response which shows complete understanding of the
material read and uses detailed examples from the book.

4 - Well-developed response which shows good understanding of the material read
and uses examples from the book.

3 - Average response which shows that student has read required material, but
doesnt demonstrate a depth of understanding or effort or doesnt include
examples.

2 - Minimal response which doesnt prove that the student has read the material.

1 - Response that, although submitted on time, is so short or so off topic that it is not
evident that student has read the material.

Any response submitted late will automatically drop down to the next lower level in the above
rubric. Also, be sure to follow any individual instructions that your book club leader gives. No
summer reading responses will be accepted after the first day of school (unless special
conditions have been communicated to you).

Completing Assignments in Schoology
1. Look under Courses and you should see the title of your book.
2. To access assignments, click on Discussions and your response question
assignments will show up.
3. Follow your book club leaders instructions in responding to discussions.
4. Once you have clicked on the discussion, simply type your comment in the
space provided.
5. Once you have completed your response, click Post.

iPad Information and FAQs

Q. What should I do if my iPad is damaged over the summer?
A. Please contact Mr. Huss at (803) 807-4171 or Jacob.Huss@BenLippen.com to arrange
for a repair. If you purchased insurance for your iPad last fall it is still in effect for the
summer. If not, charges will be assessed based on the Loss, Theft, and Damage Policy.

Q. Do I need to purchase any supplies or accessories related to the iPad?
A. The only required iPad accessory is a case. If you have a case from last year that is still
in good shape then you may continue to use it. If not, you must purchase one. The
minimum requirement is that a case covers the front, back, and corners of the iPad. To
see a list of recommended cases, visit http://bit.ly/BLCases.

Q. When can new students get their iPads?
A. New students may sign up via RenWeb for a time to get their iPad. Each student, along
with a parent, must attend a meeting at BLS during the week of July 21-25 where the
iPad will be issued and instructions given on how to use and care for the device. Go to
the Web Forms section of RenWeb to sign up for a time. New boarding students will
receive their iPads during orientation.

Q. What do I do if my charger or sync cable is lost or damaged?
A. Those items will need to be replaced through the school. The cost is $20 for the cable
and $20 for the charger. Insurance does not cover either item. Contact Mr. Huss if you
need replacements.

Q. What type of iPad are BLS students issued?
A. Our iPads are WiFi only, 3rd generation models with 16 GB of storage.

Q. Will insurance be available for purchase again next year?
A. Yes, we are planning to offer optional insurance coverage again next year. The details of
that coverage have not all been finalized, but it will be very similar in cost and in
coverage to what was offered this year.

Q. Can I purchase insurance next year if I did not purchase it in 2013-14?
A. Yes, all BLS families are eligible to purchase iPad insurance.

Q. How do we sign up to purchase insurance?
A. As soon as that information is finalized we will send it out via email and the Talon Times
e-newsletter. It will be sometime after school starts in the fall.

Calling Prep Graduation Requirement
(Rising Juniors)

Ben Lippen School is committed to helping students discover their unique God-given calling for
their life. In previous years a Junior Seminar helped students examine their skills, interests,
passions and calling during the 11th grade year. However, due to the intense course load
typical of most students during their junior year, Junior Seminar has been eliminated as a
formal course. Instead, some of its key components will be required of all rising juniors in an
independent study format to help them realize their unique calling and prepare them for the
college application process during their senior year.

Students may begin work and even complete most of these independent study components
during the summer after their sophomore year. All components must be completed by May of
their junior year. Completing the components of the Calling Prep Graduation Project is a
graduation requirement and must be successfully completed in order to receive a Ben Lippen
diploma.

Students should contact the guidance department for an access code to log into their Naviance
account, because all work for this independent study will be recorded by the student into the
students Naviance account. Once the account has been created, the student will see four tabs
across the top: Colleges, Careers, About Me, and My Planner. Under the My Planner tab there
is a tab called Tasks Assigned to Me. Under this tab are all the tasks (also listed below) that
the student must complete.

Naviance Assessments

Career Interest Profiler
Game Plan Survey

Senior Community Service Hours Guidelines

All seniors must complete 30 Community Service Hours prior to May 1. Senior community
service hours can be completed in the summer following the junior year or during the senior
year. Thirty community service hours during the senior year or summer following the
junior year are a mandatory graduation requirement for all seniors.

The intent of community service hours are to reach out to the community beyond a students
individual family, investing in the lives of others in a students larger community, school, church,
and/or society. Students are encouraged to serve broadly and creatively in a number of
different venues to use and develop their gifts, talents, and a passion and heart for service.
Participation as a volunteer in a Ben Lippen Fundraising event that wholly benefits financial aid
during the Junior or Senior year qualifies for community service hours. Participation in a
Winterim missions trip during the Junior or Senior year also qualifies for senior community
service hours.

Please note that National Honor Society service hours cannot also count for the required 30
Senior Community Service Hours. Additionally, service hours required for athletes cannot be
counted for the 30 required Senior Community Service Hours.

Students are to log their Senior Community Service Hours in Naviance as they complete them
rather than waiting to log them when they are all completed.
