Footnotes
Footnotes are used to give credit to sources of any
material borrowed, summarized or paraphrased. They
are intended to refer readers to the exact pages of the
works listed in the Bibliography section.
If you are using a word processor, you can access the
superscript function. To type a Footnote citation, the
same superscript number
1
is put at the beginning of
the Footnote at the bottom of the same page where the
citation occurs.
When mentioning a work for the first time, a full
and complete Footnote entry must be made.
Examples:
For books
Authors First and Last Name, Title of the Book,
Publisher, Place of Publication, date of publication,
page Number(s).
For Journals
Authors First and Last Name, Title of Article, Title
of Journal, Volume, year, page number(s).

Authors Name, Title of Document, Date Last
Updated, Title of Organization or Website, Date
Accessed <URL>.
Use of ibid.
Ibid. (from Latin ibidem in the same place.) is a
standard abbreviation which is used in footnotes. Use
it only when the footnote refers to exactly the same
work as cited in the previous footnote.
Use of op. cit.
Another standard abbreviation which can be used is op.cit.
(from Latin opere citato)This can be used when referring to
a work which has already been cited in the footnotes but
which does not appear immediately before the footnote
concerned. If the author has more than one book cited in
the research paper, the authors name must be followed by
the title of the book being cited as illustrated in footnote
30 below. (Unlike Charles Oman, G.M. Trevelyan has more
than one book cited in this paper)
Other uses of the footnotes
Footnotes may give information or make
comments that are necessary not suitable
for including in the text(e.g. giving
definitions to new concepts, short
biographies, explanations etc.). Footnotes
also may refer a reader to other opinions, or
send a reader to other pages or sections of
the research paper (e.g. see p. 9, see section
one).
Bibliography
A bibliography is a list of citations of
sources used to write a paper. A writer
should include sources from which direct
quotes were extracted to support the writers
own ideas, paraphrased ideas from other
sources, and sources the writer consulted to
gain a general understanding of the research
topic.
Formatting for a bibliography
Place the bibliography at the end of a paper
The title should be Bibliography or Works Cited
and should appear centered at the top of the page
Double-space all lines
Arrange entries alphabetically by the authors last
name
The first line of each entry is at the left margin. Any
additional lines for an entry are indented five spaces
Additional formatting guidelines the bibliography
Author: Last name first, followed by a
comma. With regards to initials and full
name usage, the authors name should
appear as it does on the title page of the
work being cited. For example, if the
authors name appears on the title page as
Anthony T. Boyle, Ph.D., it should appear
as Boyle, Anthony T. in the bibliography.
Punctuation: Commas appear
after the author, title, place of
publication, and the publisher.
Each entry ends with a full stop.
