Engagement: Al Jazeera interview and tour at Port and LSA
Type: Broadcast (on camera) interview. Crew will gather b-roll footage of tour locations.
Background: Al Jazeera English has been on the ground since soon after the earthquake.
According to JTF PAO coverage by the outlet has been consistently fair with no complaints or
back feedback from other units. After speaking with the producer Rachel Levin, assessment
is the outlet will give us a more than fair opportunity to highlight our involvement here in Haiti.
The fact that we approved and booked their request for interview within 6 hours of initial request
demonstrates transparency on our part which will begin the engagement on a favorable note.
Outlet angle: According to the producer the outlet is looking to highlight the US military
involvement here in the country. Rachel stated that many of those she has spoken within and
outside the media have the opinion that the US has taken over the operation here. She is not of
that opinion and is looking for stories that highlight how we are helping where the Haitians and
UN do not have the capability or capacity to help. We have the unique opportunity to highlight
the unique capabilities we bring to this operation that not only can be used to sustain our own
forces in country but if needed can be called upon and utilized by the Haitian Government or
UN.
Objective: Make Al Jazeeras audience aware of 1) what the JLC is and 2) how we are
uniquely qualified and equipped to support the Haitian and international effort not usurp it.
Themes to highlight:
This is a global response
Haitians are helping Haitians
Ever expanding partnerships
Sustainability we will stand by Haiti in the long run
Themes we need to counter:
US is taking over the country
US efforts are too slow and disorganized
US is keeping Haitian government and institutions afloat
US Military is an occupying force
US will rebuilding Haiti
Strategy: Highlight JTF Themes and use compelling imagery of our unique equipment,
ongoing partnerships, and young Soldiers on the ground operating in cooperation sith NGOs
and Haitians to make things happen. This will be accomplished first with crew taping footage at
the port, an interview at the port, then traveling to the LSA for the same.
