Annual review 2013/14 This report is made possible by 2 Register your skilled role with us today Register your skills with us today 3 This is Reach We bring together like-minded professional people who want to share their expertise with voluntary organisations that find their help incredibly useful. In fact, those skills are sometimes vital; game-changing even. And over the next few years, we will do much more of this. The big picture is about increasing the quality, scale and impact of skilled volunteering across the UK. Its about the Reach community with its aspirations, talents and commitment. 2013 was a very positive year for Reach. We focused on our mission of connecting people who have expertise to donate with charities that need their help. Figures increased for placements, charities helped and opportunities registered with us. The most dramatic rise, however, was in the number of professionals joining our register an increase of over 60% on 2012. We are keenly aware many charities do not have the full range of expertise they need on their board and struggle to recruit trustees with the right skills. Recognising that cost was sometimes an obstacle, we decided to make our main trustee recruitment service free for all charities with a turnover of under 1million. This has resulted in an upsurge in trustee opportunities of over 150% clearly a popular move! We also renewed our own board last year with a new chair, treasurer and trustee with digital expertise all from our own volunteer register, I am proud to say. This year we are transforming our service to an online, self-service model. This will enable us to facilitate many more placements, allow charities to secure a much broader range of help and allow our staff and volunteers to focus on providing more individual support where its most needed. Having secured funding, work began at the end of 2013 and we hope to go live in the autumn. We will also review how we evaluate the impact of the volunteers we place: we know that they make a big difference to their charities, but we want to get better at measuring and communicating this. We believe the benefits that skills-based volunteering offers to both charities and prospective volunteers is not fully recognised and we want to get the message across to a much wider audience. Janet Thorne, CEO 2 Register your skilled role with us today Introduction An upsurge in trustee opportunities Janet Thorne 4 Register your skilled role with us today Register your skills with us today 5 Following a challenging year in 2012, Reach refocused and delivered a strong performance in 2013, registering 1,296 new roles and 1,692 new volunteers. This was well above forecast and the targets we set ourselves. We also made 572 placements in 2013 and saw significant growth in TrusteeWorks registrations. We ended 2013 in a much better position financially than a year earlier. We are well placed to capitalise on this in 2014 when our new interactive website will be introduced. Increasingly, our new online presence will transform Reach, offering our services to many more volunteers and charities in a modern and flexible way better suited to the needs of our customers. In this way, we will be able to maximise the support we can give to the many charities seeking managerial and other skills that are volunteered by people still at work or retired. When I joined Reach in 2013, I was excited by the new opportunities to help voluntary organisations find the expertise needed to increase their effectiveness in delivering a wide range of valued services. In 2014, we will begin to achieve this vision. It is a privilege to work with and represent the dedicated volunteers at Reach whose contribution underpins the achievements of the last 12 months and I greatly look forward to continuing to do so in the year ahead. Andrew Dent, Chair Review of 2013 Our new online presence will transform Reach Our trustees are very impressed with all that Reach has achieved especially over the last 18 months and they are excited by the potential of the new web-based platform. Most of all the Trust appreciates the excellent support that Reach continues to provide to a large number of small and not so small charities and wishes to continue to support Reach with this for the next three years. We estimate that in 2013 our volunteers once again transferred just over 8 million worth of skills to the voluntary sector, skills that in most cases, the charities could not otherwise have afforded. New three-year funding agreements signed with Esme Fairbairn Foundation and The Rayne Foundation, complementing the new three-year agreements signed in late 2012 with City Bridge Trust and Sobell Foundation. An increase of 18% in total income generated during the year. A further 20% reduction in operating costs was achieved, following a similar reduction in 2012. Ranking among the top 6,000 buildings in the country, the future of the impressive 19th Century church in the middle of Brixton, south London, was in jeopardy when its congregation was no longer able to afford to keep it. In 1993 The Brix was formed as a social enterprise to enable this special building to continue its community focus as well as enable churchgoers to carry on worshipping there. Now celebrating its twentieth anniversary, the organisation is at the forefront of keeping the church as a sustainable, educational and vibrant part of its community, earning its own keep by hiring out space. Three special Reach volunteers have helped this to happen. Chair of trustees Caroline Clark: Absolutely all of our income is gathered from our activities so its vital we have the right people in place to develop them. Reach helped us find two trustees: Giles and Ciara, and also Karen, our webmaster. With a working history at TFL, Giles is our marketing expert on the board. He has done a tremendous amount of promotion for us and has had a phenomenal impact. We depend on getting the word out for our income and Giles has used a mixture of social media, events and website to create maximum coverage. Last year, he led a consultation for our Peace Garden combined with a Jubilee tea party. Ciara also came from Reach to sit on our board. As a former senior civil servant, her contribution to trustee meetings is immense. She is great to have as a colleague. She is always logical, strategic and a clear thinker. The work of the board is supported by Karen, who works at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and came to the charity via a Reach/GSK local volunteering project. Karen used her skills to set up the charitys website and continues to support it four years later. Im very grateful to Reach. Loretta Balfour is speaking about her work as a Reach volunteer with the Princes Trust, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged young people. After 35 years at the Este Lauder Companies in executive roles, Loretta retired but couldnt go from being a workaholic to doing nothing. Reach offered her a placement as a business mentor with The Princes Trust and the rest is history. The Trust asked her to sit on their Launch Panel. But, said Loretta, I wanted to work at the coal face directly with the young people on the Enterprise Programme, to help them develop their business plans and advise them through the start- up years. In the end, we compromised and I did both. The Trust was eager to co-opt Lorettas executive experience. She became chair of the Launch Panel, which reviews business plans and makes recommendations for funding and support. When new developments were made to the Trusts Enterprise Programme, Loretta was asked to provide her input. A training programme, compulsory for everyone who is starting a business, was implemented and Loretta delivers the mentoring session. What does Loretta get out of her work with the Trust? Young people come in who have had difficulties in life, are set on a path or maybe not and dont necessarily know how to move forward. When you see how they progress, you know youve made a difference. Loretta and the Princes Trust Applying executive experience to a leading charity Delighted to have informally accepted a general trustee position with Nottm & District @CitizensAdvice with thanks to @ReachSkills. Roxy, @Roxy_Sham I am now a trustee of a great charity, and it is down to your organisation. I have spoken to a couple of like-minded friends about your site as well, so hopefully some of them will find something through it. Thanks so much great service and so worthwhile. The landscape has changed a great deal in that time and to remain a pioneer, we have regularly reviewed our activities and approach. We wanted to share with you our priorities and look forward to updating you on progress in the months ahead. 1. We will meet the skilled volunteering needs of more charities Well do this by introducing our new online platform and extending our coverage in terms of geography, skills and sub-sectors, such as disability and health. 2. We will make volunteer recruitment more effective for both charities and volunteers We will ground the development of our new platform in feedback from our users and will focus, as ever, on the quality of our opportunities and skilled volunteers. 3. We will raise the awareness of Reach and skilled volunteering in the UK We will equip our staff, volunteers, users and friends of Reach to promote our services and take a leading role in raising awareness of the benefits of skills-based volunteering across the UK. 4. We will demonstrate effectively the impact of skills-based volunteering We will work with external partners to define the best way of evaluating and communicating our impact. 5. We will achieve a secure financial future for Reach We will maintain the high level of volunteer involvement in our work and strengthen relationships with existing corporate and trust funders. 6. We will develop our governance, internal structure and resources to deliver our strategy We will continue to integrate volunteers at every level of the organisation and across all functions and will recruit additional board members to fill skills gaps. Liam Loan-Lack, @LiamLoanLack I have been very grateful for the support that you have offered and have recommended Reach to others who are interested in volunteering. A Surrey volunteer We recently used Reachs service to help us recruit new trustees to our board. We found the service to be quick and responsive to our needs, with the people referred having relevant skills. As a small, third sector organisation ourselves, a professional, free and efficient service has been valuable. We will go to them again when needs arise.
