The Summer Youth Recreation Program is a drop-in* activity.


Activities, offered Monday through Friday, include free lunch and
snack, arts and crafts, table games, tournaments, special events
and more.

FREE SUMMER FOOD PROGRAM

Free lunches and snacks are served to children 1-18


years of age, Monday through Friday, June 2 through
August 8, 2014. Lunches and snacks are served on a
first come, first served basis at the locations below.
The City of Alhambra through the United States
Department of Agriculture administers the Summer
Food Service Program.

The After School Site Program is conducted at nine elementary school


sites. Activities include team and individual sports and alternative
programs. Alternative programs will include; arts and crafts, table
game tournaments, four square, kickball, and new games. Alternative
activities are conducted as staff availability warrants. In case of rain
sites may be closed. For more information, please call the Recreation
Services Division office at (626) 570-5081. This is a Drop In* activity.

Learn basic cheerleading skills including rhythm, music, choreography,


showmanship and team cooperation in this popular program.
Participants will cheer at City of Alhambra Flag Football games.
The program will conclude with the annual All City Cheerleading
Championships. THERE MAY BE ADDITIONAL UNIFORM COSTS. There
will be a Parents meeting to discuss important program information

Free Arts and Crafts are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at the
Summer Food Programs sites at the following times:

CHEERLEADING FEE $30 includes T-shirt

FLAG FOOTBALL FEE: $30.00

This program will emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship. Players


will learn football techniques such as passing, blocking and catching.
Practices will begin in September. Registration ends Friday, October
3, 2014. Games will be played at Almansor Park. Mandatory parents
meeting on Thursday, September 18, 2014 at 6:00pm in the Almansor
Park Activity Room.

BASKETBALL FEE: $30.00

Students, grades 3-8, learn the basics of speed, agility, strategy and
sportsmanship. Registration ends Friday, January 16, 2015. League games
and playoffs will take place at Almansor Park. Parents Meeting Thursday,
January 8, 2015 at 6:00pm in the Almansor Park Activity Room.

WANTED VOLUNTEER COACHES

The Community Services Department is seeking volunteer coaches to


assist with the youth sports and cheerleading programs. Individuals
interested in becoming a volunteer coach or an assistant coach may
sign up at time of registration or call (626) 570-5081.

There are no fees for open-play activities. Instruction fees, club

graduated from high school. For

Registration for all adult sports leagues is taken on a first come basis, regardless of
returning or new team status. Fees must be paid at the time of registration. Fees

Horseshoe pits are located adjacent to the gym at Almansor Park for
participants of all ages. You must provide your own horseshoes.

TO REGISTER - Its easy to register. You can Phone-In, Fax, Drop-

Off, or Mail-In your registration. Please refer to the registration form on


page 28 of the brochure, for the correct address or telephone number
for registration. Participants will be allowed to register in class at the
first class meeting, as space permits. Participants will not be admitted
to any fee program without being registered or paying the guest fee.
Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. All classes are subject
to cancellation or schedule change if class minimums are not met.
Classes are closed when maximum enrollment is met and/or after the
third week of each session. Enroll early to ensure the minimum for the
class you desire has been met. Children are not allowed in adult classes
with parents.

Payments can be made with cash (exact amount only),


MasterCard, Visa, Discover, personal check or money order. Cash only
at Alhambra Park. When paying by check please include your drivers
license number and expiration date on the check. All fees are payable
in full at the time of registration and are not transferable or prorated.
In-class registration is taken the first day of class only. NO CASH will be
accepted by city staff for in-class registration.

GUESTS -

Guests are invited to attend class for a one-time guest fee,


only within the first three weeks of class. A $7 guest fee must be paid
by check, payable to the City of Alhambra. If you decide to register for
the class, the $7 guest fee will be applied toward the registration fee,
otherwise it is forfeited.

REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY -

The City of
Alhambra will not issue any refunds after the first class meeting. Refunds
will only be granted if the participant cancels prior to the first class
meeting. A $2 processing fee will be assessed. Full refunds will be issued
only for classes cancelled by the City of Alhambra.

PRESCHOOL MUSIC CLASS

Enjoy music and movement classes for children with their parents
or caregivers. Teaching materials with different animal themes are
designed to stimulate young minds with a wide variety of musical

fun activities, music and social play. Parents will have the chance

PAINTING WORKSHOP

Welcome to the Painting Workshop! Here you can learn the basics
in Painting if you are a Beginner, or deepen your skills if you are
experienced in painting. We usually start new students in Acrylics, but
students may work in other mediums if they have prior experience.
The social vibe is upbeat! Come learn and make new friends while
creating beautiful painting for yourself or others! Subject matter for
paintings will be discussed with the instructor and based upon prior
experience, but range from copying old masters to creating original
work, such as landscape, portrait, or abstract. By request, a class

BEGINNING YOGA LEVEL

This class is for the student new to yoga or new to the Iyengar method.
This course introduces the basic poses, principles of movement

PRENATAL YOGA

This yoga practice is designed to support the most healthy and


comfortable pregnancy possible. During pregnancy, yoga helps keep
the body fit and the mind at ease. Mothers-to-be will find that yoga
can maintain strength and functioning during pregnancy which can
ease the difficulty of labor and postpartum recovery. Practicing yoga
while pregnant is an especially gratifying experience; yoga can give
a mother time to discover her deep, emotional bond with her baby
even before birth.

TENNIS - LEISURE CLASSES

This clinic is the perfect tennis intro. Students will learn the basics of
the: forehand, backhand, volley, and serve in a coordination building,
fitness friendly, fun, atmosphere. Your child will love joining in fun tennis
games. We believe that tennis will bring each of our students more fun,
fitness, and friendships for a lifetime. Pee Wee, ages 3 6, have fun age
appropriate games and techniques. Junior Tennis, ages 7 13, focus on
three mastery levels. Junior Tennis Academy, ages 7 17, is for students
who have attained the three mastery levels, must have instructor
approval. The adult classes (4 student max.) work on improving skills
while getting a great workout and making new friends. Students must

The summer and fall schedule for Alhambra Park and Granada Park Pools will run from Monday, June 14 through Saturday, August 2, 2014, and is packed
with traditional programs like recreational swimming, swim lessons. Special programming includes lap swim, adaptive swim lessons, and private swim
lessons. New for this season the City will offer the Guppy Guards and Jr. Life Guard programs. All programs are held in the outdoor pools at Alhambra
Park and Granada Park. Weekday (Mon-Fri) swim lessons begin Monday, June 16th and Saturday swim lessons begin on June 14th. Schedules are
subject to change without notice.

Pool Office Hours:

Participants must be at least 8 years old for admission during


recreational swim. Children under 8 years of age and under 48 inches
tall must be accompanied by an adult or guardian (18 years or older)
in the water at all times. There must be one parent/guardian for every
two (2) children under 8 years and under 48 inches tall. Appropriate
swimsuits are required. Please note: during times of low attendance
the activity may end earlier than posted times. As a safety precaution,
admission may be limited based on the lifeguard-patron ratio.

SWIM LESSONS

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

The Regular Two-Week Session for youth


and adults consist of (9) 35-minutes classes,
one per day, Monday through Friday, for the
first week and Monday through Thursday
for the second week. The Saturday Session
consists of 40-minutes classes, one per
Saturday, held on four consecutive Saturdays.
Note: if needed, a skills test will be given at
the beginning of the session, to determine
the appropriate class level for the student.
When appropriate, the student may be
changed to another class level depending on
class availability.
Parent/Child Classes introduces Parents
& Children to the aquatic environment.
Parents will be instructed on how to teach
water adjustment skills and games to their
children. Ages: 6 months to 3 years (Minimum
participants 10.)
Tots Class is designed for children with little
or no swimming experience, and is geared
mainly towards water adjustment while
introducing primary swimming skills. Ages:
3-5 years (Minimum participants 6.)
Beginner Class provides a basic introduction
to swimming strokes. Ages: 6 years and up
(Minimum participants 8.)
Advance Beginner Class provides
instruction to solidify and strengthen skills,
such as proper stroke and kicking techniques,
learned in the beginner class. Ages: 6 years
and up; must have completed Beginner class
(Minimum participants 8.)
Intermediate Swimmer - Class is designed
to increase swimmers endurance and
introduce new strokes to the students who
have successfully completed the Advance
Beginner class (Minimum participants 8.)

Guppy Guards / Junior Lifeguard Course


Guppy Guards is for 7-10 yrs olds and Jr.
Lifeguards is for 11-14 yrs olds interested in
learning about Aquatics and Safety. Swim
test is required for all participants. This
course meets Monday through Friday for
one week. Activities include water skills,
conditioning, water relays and a mock
water rescue. Skills gain from participation
include stroke development, Intro. to CPR/
first aid, and water safety techniques. This
course is educational, challenging and full
of water full. (July 29 -August 2)

REGISTRATION:

All classes that do not meet the minimum enrollment are subject to
cancellation. Registration for a class will close when the maximum students is reached. Special
registration days will be conducted at Alhambra Park and Granada Park pools on Saturday,
May 31 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday, June 1from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Registration will be
accepted for all sessions at this time. After these Special Registration days, registration will be
accepted (as space permits) during regular office hours (listed above.)
Registration is only accepted in person. Phone and mail-in registration is not available. Payment
can be made by cash (exact change,) check (made payable to the City of Alhambra) and credit
card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover Card.) A waiting list will be established when classes are full.
If space in a class becomes available, the opening will be first filled from the waiting list. The
lesson schedule is subject to change. Specific class times will be posted at the pools or visit

ADAPTIVE SWIM LESSONS
Swimmers with limited motor skills and abilities are provided exercise to improve
cardiovascular and motor functions. Please consult with your health care provider
before enrolling into this program. This class is conducted at Granada Park Pool only,
during the regular session dates (listed above), Monday through Friday, 3:30 4:00 pm
and Saturday, 9:00 9:40 am. Space is limited.
PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS
This is one-on-one swim instruction for individuals who want to improve and refine their
swimming skills. Lessons are available on alternating Fridays at both Alhambra and Granada
pools. Participant must arranged a mutually agreed upon date and time with aquatic staff. All
levels and abilities are welcome. Space is limited.

Los Angeles County Area Agency on Aging
to serve the Southwest San Gabriel Valley
Community Services Area. As a Focal
Point Network Member, the Joslyn Adult
Recreation Center serves as a central access
point for information and services to assist
senior citizens and their family members.
The Department of Community Services,
Senior Services Division, features a
wide variety of programs and activities
for adults age 60 and over, including
recreation, social services, congregate
meals, and transportation. Unless

SAFE RETURN PROGRAM

The Joslyn Adult Center provides registration


materials for the Alzheimer Associations
Safe Return Program 1-888-572-8566. This
nationwide system helps to locate, identify,
and safely return persons with dementia,
who wander and become lost. For more

CASE MANAGEMENT PROJECT

Seniors (age 60+) who reside in Alhambra


are assisted with finding resources to remain
living independently in their homes for as
long as it is safely possible. Services are
provided free of charge. Donations from
clients and their families are accepted and
gratefully acknowledged. Assistance is
available in English, Mandarin, and Spanish.

in the form of meal preparation, basic
household tasks, and light cleaning.

PERSONAL CARE SERVICES

Case Management Project staff will


coordinate temporary assistance to frail
clients to maintain bodily hygiene, personal
safety, and Activities of Daily Living.

IN-HOME RESPITE SERVICES

Case Management Project staff will


coordinate temporary assistance to a client
in the absence of their current Caregiver.

REGISTRY SERVICES

The Case Management Project has a list of


providers who are able to deliver services
to clients. Providers are screened with a
LIVESCAN and interviewed prior to being
placed on a registry list. Services are at a
negotiated rate between the client and the
registry provider.

OUTREACH SERVICES

Case Management Project staff will identify


potential clients and encourage their use of
existing services. This is done on a one-onone basis or a group presentation.

TELEPHONE REASSURANCE

Case Management Project senior volunteers


make weekly telephone calls to homebound
seniors. Calls are made to check on their
safety, well-being, and provide contact with
the outside world.

residents of any age. This curb-to-curb service transports participants throughout Alhambra
for any purpose, and up to two miles outside the city for medical appointments. To register

SENIOR NUTRITION PROGRAM Library Hours

The Senior Nutrition Program, offered Monday through Friday


at 11:00 am, provides a hot, nutritionally balanced congregate
meal to senior citizens 60+ years of age. Lunch is provided by
YWCA/Intervale Senior Services for a suggested donation of $2.
Reservations are a must and should be made one day in advance.
Reservations can be made by calling (626) 458-4455 Monday
through Friday at 9:30 am. Lunch reservations are first come
first served. City Staff plan fun celebrations in conjunction with
the YWCAs Nutrition Program. Stop by the Joslyn Adult Center
to pick up a monthly lunch menu and schedule of celebrations.
Participation in Celebrations requires a lunch reservation.

Birthdays are celebrated the first Wednesday of the month, during


the Senior Nutrition Program. Celebrate your birthday or cheer on

event takes place from 9:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m.
