Storage vMotion on ESXi 5.x fails with the error: Cannot allocate
memory (2000026)
Details
You are unable to complete Storage vMotion
You see an error in the vSphere Client similar to:
Failed to create destination disk /vmfs/volumes/datastore/vm/vm1.vmdk (Cannot
allocate memory).
In the virtual machine's vmware.log file, you see messages similar to:
Worker#0| SVMotionMirroredModeThread: Failed to create destination disks
Worker#0| Msg_Post: Error
Worker#0| [msg.svmotion.destdisk.createfail] Storage vMotion failed to create
the destination disk /vmfs/volumes/UUID/Folder/vmdkname.vmdk (Cannot allocate
memory).
Worker#0| [msg.svmotion.disk.createphase.fail] Failed to create one or more
destination disks. Canceling Storage vMotion.
In the /var/log/hostd.log file, you see messages similar to:
Datastore Accessibility cannot be inferred from relative filepath: ./VMname-1-
07380855.hlog

Solution
This problem can occur due to a memory addressing problem on the host attempting the Storage vMotion
migration.
To work around this issue, attempt the Storage vMotion operation from another host in the environment:
1. Perform a standard vMotion migration to move the running state of the virtual machine to another
compatible host in the environment.
2. Once the host has been moved, attempt a Storage vMotion migration to the desired datastore again.
If you are unable to use vMotion to migrate the virtual machine to another host:
Power off and then power on the virtual machine again. Retry the Storage vMotion migration.
Power off the virtual machine, remove it from inventory and then manually add it to inventory on
another host. Retry the Storage vMotion migration.
Restart the host that the virtual machine is registered on.

Note: If the Storage vMotion operation fails on other hosts in the environment, a cold migration can be used
to move the virtual machine. Note that a cold migration requires that the virtual machine be powered off.
