PROGRAM OF THE DAY
The meeting was opened by David Kruegel, with a very
relevant message on living life to the fullest.
The speaker for today was Courtney Guinn, from the
Moraga School District, who described the new California
common core standards curriculum. The concept was
developed to address many of the widely different
educational standards and levels of achievements among
schools and districts throughout the nation. Forty-five states
have already adopted the common core curriculum. The
primary goal of the program is to develop the key skills and
knowledge for students to achieve success in a global
society and to have the necessary sets of knowledge
essential to college or career preparation. Skills in speaking
and listening are also highly emphasized in the core
curriculum. The speaker outlined many features of the math
curriculum and the studies in English and Language Arts. It
was a very interesting presentation of a program which is of
great current discussion throughout the nation.

Debbie Roessler displays some club banners brought back
from her visit to the Rotary International Convention in
Sydney, Australia. She and Lou had a great tour and will
report to the Club at a later date.

SUPER DAY FOR BOCCE BALL BASH
Saturday was a beautiful day for the 6th Annual Rotary
District Bocce Ball Bash. Sixty teams representing 27 clubs

showed up at the Martinez Bocce Ball Courts. Among the
200 participants, were a stalwart group of Moraga Rotarians,
including Angelo & Suzann Contanza, John & Mary Sue
Erickson, Frank & Linda May, Gary & Carol Irwin, Tony
Schoemehl, Colin Barnard, Al Simonsen, Doug
Damaschino, Nora Avelar-Martin, Ron Julian and your
observing editor, Cliff Dochterman. It was reported that the
fund raising portion of the event made possible a
contribution to The Rotary Foundation of over $4300.
(Above: Tony Schoemehl rolls critical points.) The
tournament winners were: 1. Pleasant Hill 2. Alamo 3.
Martinez and 4. Benica. Although Moraga was not in the
top four, Im sure we certainly scared the other teams!

THE EDITORS COMMENTS
In governmental affairs, many leaders will cling to their office
for decades. However, in Rotary it is traditional that all Club
presidents and international leaders are totally changed
each year on J uly first. The question is often asked, What
happens to those who add past to their previous titles?
Unfortunately, a few just drift off with a been there-done
that-and have the t-shirt attitude. Others occasionally will
actually disappear from active Rotary membership. Some
former presidents quietly sit through weekly meetings just
enjoying the view from their out-to-pasture position.
Moraga Rotary is fortunate to have many of our former
leaders step forward to continue in roles of leadership. In a
Club the size and age of Moraga Rotary it is natural to find
that many members have previously served as President. So
the Club can be grateful that Nora Avelar-Martin was willing
to serve a second year as Club President this past year, and
to know that Debbie Roessler will soon assume her second
term as President on J uly first!
In addition, many of our other Past Presidents take very
active leadership positions in the Club. Past Presidents
Tony Schoemehl and Al Simonsen have carried the ball
for Rotary Field Day; Doug Damaschino does the work of
Sergeant-at-Arms; Gary Irwin and Frank May take on the
tasks as Newsletter editor; Colin Barnard has served in the
huge job as program chairman; Rich Render does much of
the bookkeeping assignments and heads up the e-Waste
collections; John Erickson has usually been the perennial
Christmas party chairmen and the go-to-guy when any task
needs completing; Angelo Costanza is our Camp Royal
coordinator and bocce guru; and, of course, Past District
Governor Jim Campbell has been our Clubs most
prominent leader in Rotary District activities.
It is appropriate to express our appreciation to all of these
members who once wielded the gavel in Moraga Rotary, but
willingly continue their spirit of service to the Club. And to
Nora and Debbie we express our deep appreciation for
stepping forward to serve a double term as President!
