Franklin D. Roosevelt

"Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 a date which will live in infamy the United States
of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the
Empire of Japan." These were words Franklin D Roosevelt said when the United States
of America was attacked by the Japanese. The attack has caused severe damage to
American naval and military forces. Many American lives have been lost. In addition,
American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco
and Honolulu. In this review of the speech, I am going to show the difference between
Ethos,Pathos, and Logos.
"The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan,
was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the
maintenance of peace in the Pacific." This was an example of Logos. Logos, is when
someone appeals to logic through what they say. What FDR said was definitely Logos
because it showed that even though they attacked the u.s, they still was at peace with
the U.S. Another sign of Logos was when he said "It will be recorded that the distance
of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many
days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has
deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of
hope for continued peace." That's a sign of Logos.
Now for Pathos, when FDR said these words "The attack yesterday on the
Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I
regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American
ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and
Honolulu.", showed a sign of pathos. This line showed that he wanted to get people's
feelings, by telling them how badly hurt everyone was. The attack alone needed a form
of sympathy, many hurt but lots were killed. This part of the speech was definite sign of
pathos.
FDR also had signs of ethos, in his speech he said many things. Most of the stuff he
said was logos but the most important parts were ethos. When he said "Indeed, one
hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of
Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to
our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this
reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it
contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack." It was his sign in telling the
people that can be trusted. Altogether his speech was powerful and he showed a great
deal of ethos.
FDR speech touched everyone hearts with his experience of events. His speech
showed many good signs of ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Due to his great speech, it was
named one of the best speeches ever made. The attack was a heartless event
committed by the japanese. Like FDR said " December 7th, 1941, a date which will live
in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by
naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan" and that will stay with us forever.
