Waianae^ Hawaii May 23, 1957 Greetings to you in the naiie mf cur Lfjrd Jesus Christ. Froa the "Isles of Paradise" out here in the middle of the blue Pacific Ocean we once agolA bring you news of the Makaha Mission and the Anderson family. . Perhaps you have been wondering what has hap pened to us since it has been two years since we last published a general news letter and a year since we sent out a special letter. The specific purpose of this letter is to bring you up to date on all the news. Even tho you haven't heard from usthe work of the Lord has been carried on in the same manner as before. We have been busy in the usual pastoral work as well as coop erating with the other missions in Christian Service Camps and Preaching Missions, There has been a number of additions by baptism and by transfer of membership, Ihe interest has been good especially for tho past eight months. The biggest news (mater ially speaking) is that the mission property here at Makaha has been paid off and is now debt free. The last payment was made last December, We have expended approximat- ly $12,000 for land and building; together with the fact that I did most all of the work in the conversion processwe now have property worth over $15,000, The Lord has certainly added His blessings to our efforts. Then?has been trying times, thats true, but thru it all we have been overjoyed in the work here, Ihe main reason we haven't published The Hawaiian Call id because we felt that it T/ould be better to put the funds received into the paying off the property. Before coming to Hawaii the first time Christine and I decided to limit our term of service to 3 years, since Hawaii is relatively close to tho USA and it dosen't cost near as much to travel back and forth; and rather than remain on the mainland furlough for a year or more we would stay only for three to five months. Of course this decision was made subject to it being the Lords Will. Our plans worked out fine the first term and we went to the mainland in 1954 for 5 months* We visited the churches that had been interested in the work here and who had supported the same with their prayers and money. We also visited other churches vdio wanted to know more about the Hawaii work, as well as several Christian Service ^amps. This summer1957-- is again our furlough time. We have booked passage on the liner Leilani that sails from Honolulu on June 27th and ar rives atJCjOs^^igel^onJ^ HOWEV, we have a definite problem that confronts us "strait In the race. Xet me ei^laihT Last fall we deoidedl t^i^ W"wbu3rd~wait^ 1958 before returning to the mainland. Then, we have had almost continual sickness in the family over since. Our doctor and hospital bills have been hundreds of dollars, Ronnie has been in the hospital several times with severe attacks of sinusitus, and I ^ve had a chronic case of it since spending 2 weeks in bed last Augustwith a severe attack, Our family doctor recommended that we change climate. We wanted to stay here so disregarded his warning, uhtil finally in December of last year we decided it would be best for the whole family if we returned to the mainland for an indefinite stay. This is the main reason why we booked passage in January on the ship leaving in June, HOWEVER, as the time draws near to leave Hawaiiwe don't v/ant to gothat is, we would like to go home on furlough but then come back to Hawaii, We have been asked by so many people here to come back to Hawaii, It is very difficuljr to know what to do. We want to do what the Lord wants us to dowhether it be go or stay. To tell you the truth-in our anticip ation of returning to the mainland wo made application to one of our Bible Colleges for a teaching position, Ihey are to let us know the answer the latter part of this month. If this deal works out we will consider it to be the answer to our prayers and the Lordc Will, If it dosen'tdovelop, we are considering seriously coming back to Hawaii the firt- of September even tho we do have tho health problem. Will you pray with us that the Lords Will be donewhatever the answer be, JUst 2" weeks "from ^oday" (May "27th) we have to moke the final payment on our return fare to the mainland, We made an initial deposit of |180 in February--and the balance to be paidon or before May 27th of $552. In addition to this we will need about $200 for freight on items we can't include on passenger tickets. If we ship our station wagon back that will ob an additional $300, HERE IS THE CRUX GF THE MATTER i wo are now in bho process of selling our funituro and appliance in order to help pay our fare home. If wo iwU everything we will net about $500, We need about this much more in order to get back to Tennessee, If you would like to help us return to the mainlandwill you now send us a check or money orderbefore May 27th if possible. We are not begging you to do this but merely inviting you to do so. Wo will appreciate any gift, and above all your prayers. After arriving on the mainland wo will publish another news letter lotting you know what the latest developments are concerning our indefinite stay on the mainland or our return to the islands in September, Until then, may tho good Lord bless and keep you as you live for Him oaoh day. ^
