Testing and Repairing the Sonicview 360 Elite Power Supply

You should eliminate other possibilities first perhaps a large !S" "uss powered
e#ternal hard drive$ a possible short or other problem in your antenna system$ some
corruption re%uiring the factory software to be loaded$ or even the fact that some &P or
&PP '(")s and Switch combinations could re%uire more current than the *00m+

.removed address no longer valid/
There are four separate outputs on this Power Supply$ each one has important
functions$ and they must all be within specifications-
0f you or a 1Tech1 friend could measure the voltages on your board for &, 2oltage
and +, Ripple content .Reference ,hassis 3round/$ you would 4now if there is a
problem and where it1s at-
The voltage on the 3-32 output should be very close to 3-32 .The other 3 outputs
will be somewhat 1close1/- The +, Ripple should be between 5 to 3 milli2olts at 66 478-
0 highly suggest replacing +'' the caps in the same circuit to prevent similar
9strange) problems in the future-
0f you cannot follow this advice$ 0 suggest you replace +'' the caps in the
:3-3 2olt circuit$ +(& +'' the caps in the :*-; 2olt ,ircuit$ and see if it solves
the problem-

Electrolytic ,apacitors should be tested out of circuit for 2alue$ 'ea4age at rated

You cannot 1see1 or 9feel) a good or bad cap- 0f they are bulged$ rounded up at the

replacements if you can- There is absolutely no point to go over voltage unless you
cannot obtain the correct value$ and the higher voltage ,aps will be physically larger-
Electrolytic ,apacitors Hli4eH to be operated around 60 to A0I of their wor4ing voltage-
Chy do these caps go bad J
There was a big batch of bad of Electrolytic ,apacitors? @any articles are
available describing how this one company stole an incomplete formula for the
electrolyte and produced a whole bunch of ine#pensive caps$ and flooded the world
mar4ets- Those caps found their way into a lot of consumer and commercial electronic
devices$ P,)s$ medical e%uipment$ all 4inds of things < and even into S2 power supplies-
(e#t is heat- 'oading your receiver with large !S" "uss Powered 7ard &rives
and power hungry '(")s and Switches ma4es the power supply wor4 harder and
produce more heat- @a4e sure the "ottom$ Sides$ and the Top of your receiver are
clear and unobstructed to allow air flow- &on)t set it on top of anything that produces
heat- Your Receiver draws power and produces heat < even when it)s in 9Standby)
.,loc4 &isplay/- E#cessive heat can cause early component failure- Turn your unit Bff
once in a while when it)s not in use-
,apacitors and other electronic components can also Kust plain 9Cear But)-
Dilter caps in a switching power supply running at 66 478 really do a lot of wor4 in
normal operation- They can and will feel warm to the touch in this application$ but
never 7BT .indicates high lea4age current or a partial short/- They should never feel
stone cold in this application that could indicate a value decrease or an ESR increase-
This is not a very accurate method$ and is not a substitute for real test e%uipment-
The rectifier &iodes used in this power supply are all high speed Schott4y diodes-
They must be ta4en out of circuit to test- 0f they do go bad$ they would usually 9short)$
and would usually shut the power supply down$ or blow the protective fuse- &o not
replace them with a regular rectifier diode because it will Kust 1smo4e1-
"e warned < There is high voltage present on the rear half of that circuit board
