WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

WE GATHER TO GLORIFY GOD

PRELUDE
Voluntary I in D William Boyce, 1711-1779

CALL TO WORSHIP (from Psalm 18) Luke Woodcock

One: For who is God except the Lord?
And who is a rock besides our God?
Many: the God who girded me with strength,
and made my way safe.
One: He made my feet like the feet of a deer,
and set me secure on the heights.
Many: God, you have given me the shield of your salvation,
and your right hand has supported me;
One: You gave me a wide place for my steps under me,
and my feet did not slip.
All: The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock,
and exalted be the God of my salvation!

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (IN UNISON)

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and
deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you
with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are,
and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your holy name. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

GLORIA PATRI 579 (Blue Hymnal) Greatorex

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen, Amen.

SOLO
O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee Paul Sjolund, b. 1935
Chuck Murphy, tenor

O Master, let me walk with Thee, in lowly paths of service free;
tell me Thy secret; help me bear the strain of toil, the fret of care.
Help me the slow of heart to move by some clear, winning word of love;
teach me the wayward feet to stay, and guide them in the homeward way.
Teach me Thy patience; still with Thee, in closer, dearer company,
in work that keeps faith sweet and strong, in trust that triumphs over wrong.
In hope that sends a shining ray far down the futures broadening way;
in peace that only Thou canst give, with Thee, O Master, let me live.

APOSTLES CREED (IN UNISON)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and
buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he
ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORDS PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, for ever. Amen.

WE GIVE THANKS TO GOD

O Lord, Most Holy (Panis Angelicus)
Chuck Murphy, tenor

O Lord most holy, O loving Father, Thee would we be praising alway.
Help us to know Thee, know Thee and love Thee;
Father, grant us Thy truth and grace; Father, guide and defend us.
Rule Thou our wilful hearts, keep Thee our wandering thoughts;
in all our sorrows let us find our rest in Thee;
and in temptations hour, save through Thy mighty power,
Thine aid O send us; hear us in mercy.
Show us Thy favor, so shall we live, and sing praise to Thee.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

Sunday, June 15, 2014

Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also more hard
to bear. The frequent attempt to conceal mental pain increases the burden: it is easier to say
My tooth is aching than to say My heart is broken.
C.S. Lewis

When I pray for another person, I am praying for God to open my eyes so that I can see
that person as God does, and then enter into the stream of love that God already directs
toward that person.
Philip Yancey

Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let
them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the
prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And
if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

James 5:14-15

Vision Statement

Grace Covenant will be reborn through faith in Christ for the glory of God alone. By sub-
mitting to Jesus Christ as the head of the church, our community will find new life in Him
who is renewing all creation. Neighbors of every stripe from college students to retired
professionals, hardened skeptics to committed believers will fill Grace Covenant to hear
the Good News that God so loved the world that He gave his only Son, so that all who be-
lieve in Him may not perish but have eternal life. In response, we will train our desires,
thoughts, emotions, and actions towards serving God so that He might transform us into
grateful disciples of Jesus Christ who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Congratulations to our Seminarians! Christopher Tweel and Luke Woodcock both grad-
uated from Union Presbyterian Seminary last month. Christopher received The Glenn Gib-
son Memorial Award established in 1963. This award is awarded to a student whose cour-
age and winsomeness in Christ perpetuate those qualities so excellently demonstrated by
Glenn Gibson, Jr., for whom the award is named.

Luke received The James and Elizabeth Appleby Book Award - established in 1977. This
award provides books for students entering the pastorate and are given to those whose
commitment to Christ and spiritual promise indicate particularly fruitful pastorates to the
glory of God.

Notably, our two seminary interns for this coming fall Rex Childs and Linda Pitts both
received merit awards from the Joseph and Laura Mae Stebbins Memorial Fund.

Thanks to the intrepid dozen who came out to our Church Work Day on May 31. We
cleaned window wells of leaves and mud, straightened the boiler room, arranged books in
the Chapel, balcony and transepts, inspected all kitchens, checked all used fluorescent
bulbs, pulled weeds and picked up the parking lot, removed cobwebs, polished brass,
cleaned the coffeemaker, installed a doorway handle, re-hung a mirror, and monitored the
entrance. We still have at least a dozen rooms or areas that need organizing/weeding or
updating. If you are interested in taking on a room, please contact Wayne Casey.
