Armed with a search war- rant issued by regional trial court branch 35 Judge Gerlie Borrel-Yu, the cops effected the raid but did not catch its subject, one Simban Limbona. Instead, police caught one Ronald Laurente, a resident of the barangay, inside Limbonas house. Confscated from his possession was a caliber 380 handgun with three bullets. In their report, the ESPPO said Lee was arrested at Barangay Tiguib, Oras, Eastern Samar together with his companion only identifed as Jun Cabayan. Cabayan turned out later to be Zimmer Raz upon verifcation by the NBI. It was also learned that the two earlier eluded arrest on April 25, when a joint NBI and police posse traced them to the residence of a Melba Picardo at Dolores town, also in East- ern Samar. Holding tupadas on Good Friday is prohibited, even in the national law. However, the cop-brother has been reported by co-policemen for trying to intimidate them, and imputing that the arrests were illegal. Arrested on Good Friday was Albert Abadiez y Verano, the brother of PO2 Dominador Abadiez Jr., and a Richard Cardillo y Marquez. When they arrived at Brgy. Guiwan II where the tupada was go- ing on, the police arrested Abadiez who had a gun in his possession. The other suspect, Richard Cardillo, also had a gun with him. Since it was a Good Friday, the arresting officers led by Palompon Ch. Insp. Hipolito Delima waited until Easter Sunday to have the suspects undergo inquest proceedings. On their way to Tacloban, however, the police and the arrested persons encountered an accident at Villaba, Leyte. Abadiezs arm was broken and he was made to remain at the community hospital there. Only Richard Cardillo was physically present for inquest. Inquest prosecutor Dennis Don M. Solis has since rec- ommended the fling of com- plaints of illegal possession of firearms and violation of the Cockfghting Law against Abadiez and Cardillo. Both accused are now detained. . Meanwhile, the police blot- ter at Palompon has reports of the cop Abadiez trying to in- timidate his fellow policemen and claiming the charges were politically motivated. On April 20, while they were transporting Abadiez and Cardillo to Tacloban City for the inquest, the team led by PO3 Jonas Adrian Labador recorded in the police blotter that PO2 Dominador Abadiez blocked the Patrol Car while riding a single motorcycle in civilian clothes and uttered words saying in vernacular PAREHA BAYA TA PULIS, KAHIBAW BAYA TA SA PROSESO. Then, on April 22, Pablo Chavarria y Decio, 53, re- ported to the police to record that the same policeman told him TAKILID MO PART complete with a thumbs down signal. Chavarria is the driver of Palompon Mayor Ramon Oate. Then, on April 23, one Voltaire Serapin, 57, a retired police offcer and presently a job order employee of the In Palompon, Leyte LGU reported to the police alleging that right after Albert Abadiez was arrested, he heard the suspects father saying that the arrest was with political color because he ran as can- didate for Brgy. Chairman in the October elections. Serapin also told the police that a few minutes after, the Matag-ob based cop arrived to ask why his younger brother was arrested. Hearing the facts as relayed, Serapin claims the policeman said the arrest is with political persecution. By Lalaine M. Jimenea ORMOC CITY A midwife of the City Health Offce here was shot on the head by a motorcycle-riding gunman on the morning of April 25, Friday. Luckily, the victim was able to turn her head, making the bullet miss its target. The victim was identifed as Maybel Mendoza, 26, single and a resident of Bonifacio Street, this city. She was shot near the corner of Carlos Tan- Bonifacio Streets while also riding a motorcycle. The shooting caused the girl to fall off her motorcycle, after which she ran swiftly to hide inside a store nearby, in the fear that the gunman would follow her. It was in- side the store that members of the Ormoc Rescue Team and cops of the police station one rescued her. The victim was brought to the Ormoc Doctors Hospital for treatment and was pro- nounced out of danger. The bullet only grazed the right side of her head. Witnesses state that the gunman was riding tandem on red Honda XRM but they could not identify them as they had bonnets on. Police believe that the gun- men are hired killers. They are also trying to fnd out if the shooting of Mendoza is linked to that of Bruce Tans, reportedly a close friend of the victim. Police records show that Bruce Tan was also shot at by still unidentifed gunmen sometime on the frst week of April, at around 3:00 AM at the vicinity of Brgy. Canadieng, while riding his motorcycle. Tan and Mendoza are mo- torcycle enthusiasts. Mendo- zas FB pictures show them on excursions with other motor- cycling friends. With a report from Paul Libres Businessman stabbed to death by fred employee ORMOC CITY A caren- deria owner died a violent death at the hands of a for- mer employee at around 10:00 in the evening of April 20, after he was stabbed and hacked several times while on his way home. The victim was identifed as Romeo Ycoy y Aparis, 61, the owner of a carinderia at Lilia Avenue in Brgy. Cogon. He was walking home to his residence at Purok Dahlia in the same barangay when he met his death. Police immediately ruled out robbery as a motive for killing the carenderia owner because his money was left untouched. They also noted that the violent killing could have stemmed from pure ha- tred. They also observed that the different kinds of wounds on the victims body indicated two people ganged up to kill Ycoy. On their investigation, they learned that Ycoy had recently fred three employees, which could have earned their ire. They were identifed as Jovani Estremos, 27, his nephew Ce- sar Agcang, 18, both residents Mahawan, Kananga, Leyte and a Christopher Mijares of Calunasan, Merida, Leyte. Police frst questioned Es- tremos but were convinced of his innocence. Estremos fngered Mijares as the likely suspect, claiming he had a his- tory of violence, even against them. He added that even while they were still work- ing for the victim, there were times Mijares would mock to whack Ycoy with frewood on the head when his back was turned. Three days later, on April 23, Mijares appeared at the police station here for ques- tioning, accompanied by a barangay councilor of their barangay. He was immediately identifed by witnesses as one of the two men who stabbed the victim many times. By afternoon of the same day, cops led by Ch. Insp. Ibrahim Jambiran went to the house of Mijares to fnd more evidence. There they found the t-shirt Mejares wore that eve- ning and also the motorcycle which they used to get away. The police, however, are withholding the name of Mi- jaress companion, saying he could still be a minor. By Paul Libres ORMOC CITY The corpse of an employee of the Energy Development Corporation (EDC) was found inside a pension house here early morning of Friday (April 25) after checking in for a short time. The pension house staff, however, claims they did not see if the man was with a woman when he checked in. The victims name is withheld in consideration of his family. Based on the police blotter, the city police station one received a call from the front desk staff of the Sunnette Bay Pension House about the dead body. Police and members of the Ormoc Rescue Team found the victim naked and reportedly still had an erection. The phenomenon, however, has a scientifc explanation. Causes of death that may result to such an effect include fatal gunshot wounds to the brain, damage to major blood vessels like in a heart attack, and violent death by poisoning. Noel Menguilita, front desk staff of the pension house, told police that he did not see the victim with a woman when he checked in. He said that there were times when their male customers would book a room and just text a woman to come to the room. When this happens, they do not really know which room the woman goes to. He said that he knocked on the room where the victim was checked in to remind him that his short time of three hours was already fnished. When the victim failed to respond, he decided to open the room and saw the dead body on the bed. Police, however, found no evidence to believe there was foul play in the victims death, surmising he might just have suffered from a heart attack. Army turns communist farmers to become govt cooperators KANANGA, LEYTE 55 members of the Libertad Farmers Association at- tended a one-day training on organic farming at the 19th Infantry Battalions camp in Brgy. Aguiting here recently. The training was part of the militarys continuing support to established peoples organizations in selected towns in Leyte, aimed at uplifting the lives of its members. During said training, the participants learned how to make various types of contusions. These are organic extracts made out of plants and other indigenous materials which may be used as plant growth enhancer, pesticide and soil conditioner. Contusions are made up of bacteria grown through fermentation and can also enhance the fertility of the planting area. While contusions enhance plant growth, land preparation, according to lecturer Mayang dela Cruz, is also equally important and is one the fundamental requirements in organic farming method. In organic farming, double-dig method is highly recommended when preparing the plant beds as it prevents plant roots from stress and improves retention of nutrients needed by plants for several years. All these organic farming methods and technologies were stirred by Mr. Gil Carandang, the Father of Philippine Organic Farming, who mentored the 19th IB and its clientele during a series of workshops on Sustainable Integrated Organic and Natural Mini Farm Program sponsored by the Land Bank of the Philippines. The training was also graced by Mayor Elmer Codilla who pledged support to the constituents of Brgy. Libertad. Mr. Troy Bumagat, proprietor of the Trophy Farm in Kananga, Leyte, also distributed 80 kilograms of organic rice seeds to the as- sociation. The said seeds, he said, were provided by the Department of Agriculture. Bumagat will also be giving high yielding variety of corn seeds to the same farmers association. The Li bertad Farmers As- sociation was the frst communist- inspired farmers group in Kananga, Leyte organized way back in 1992. The New Peoples Army estab- lished the group purposely to inten- sify the infuence of the communist rebels in all of the 23 barangays of the said town. The group was disintegrated when its key leaders surrendered to 19IB in 2006. In the latter part of 2012, 19IB moved to reorganize all groups that were left after the fall of the New Peoples Army in Leyte. The SEE KANANGA P. 3 ESE AUTOPARTS ENTERPRISES Tel. PRESS INSTITUTE The other craft The Lord is raided in spirit SEE FR. ROY P. 7 SEE MERCADO P. 7 4 April 21-27, 2014 YEAR 2014 is fast becoming a very special year for me. There actually are many reasons for this, and all of them leave me profoundly thankful and nervous. But among the reasons is the most gratifying fact that two men, very close to my heart, will be raised to the altars in this Year of the Laity. One is Bishop Alvaro del Portillo, succes- sor of Opus Dei founder St. Josemaria Escriva, will be beatifed in Madrid on September 27. He ordained me to the diaconate in Rome on January 28, 1991. It was his frst time to ordain candidates to the priesthood, since he was just consecrated bishop a few weeks earlier that year. The other is Blessed Pope John Paul II who will be canonized saint on April 27. By an extreme stroke of luck and, I believe, a pure bolt of grace, I was chosen as one of those to be ordained priest by him in Rome that year on May 26, Trinity Sunday. The moment I was told I would be ordained by Pope John Paul II, I literally froze in disbe- lief. Spontaneous and strong fow of prayers came a little later. I stammered in thanking God for the great gift, then I started to trace what brought me to that life-changing event. I dont think I was a particularly religious person when I was a kid. All I had in mind was to play and be naughty, just like anybody else among my friends. But my mother saw to it that I prayed the Rosary with her and some of my siblings who happened to be caught by her at the moment. She it was who instilled in me, among many other things, love and veneration for the Pope. My lola and the teachers in grade school, mostly nuns, did the same. And I just developed that love to the point that whenever I saw a picture of Pope John XXIII, the Pope at that time, I felt good and holy and somehow urged to behave. The nuns in school encouraged me to enter the seminary, but when I brought the idea to my father, he said, no way. And so I forgot about priesthood and pursued what everybody else among my friends was pursuing. At that time, all I wanted was to become rich and all that thingamajig. But I met Opus Dei while studying in col- lege in Manila. And my life changed, made a sharp turn. Well, thats now history. My love and fascination for the Pope grew even more. When Pope Paul VI visited Manila, I happened to stay just a few houses from where the Nunciature, where he stayed, was. I remember standing the whole day right in front of the Nunciature together with the crowd just to have a glimpse of him. And when I had those glimpses, it was as if I was foating on air with joy. Prayer when infused with joy became effortless. Then entered Pope John Paul II in 1978. At that time, I was already a professional man, working in some offce, but also into deep philo- sophical and theological studies. It was he who sort of challenged me to take more seriously my Christian formation. I found him irresistibly stimulating and engaging. I was sure his presence, his words, LOOK BEYOND the 1982 Nobel Literature prize for novels of haunting beauty that in- clude One Hundred Years of Solitude and the still unpublished Well See Each Other in August. There towers Gabriel Garca Mrquez of Colombia who wrote: Journal- ism is the best job in the world Journalists are lost in a labyrinth of tech- nology madly rushing the profession into the future without any control, wrote Marquez who died April 17 at his Mexico home. All journalism must, by defnition, be investiga- tive... And awareness of ethics is not merely an occasional condition of the trade, but an integral part, as essentially a part of each other as the buzz and the horsefy. Garcias frst job was with Bogotas El Espectador newspaper, which also published his frst short story in 1947, paying him 800 pesos or half a dollar. Journalism never paid much. As long as there was whisky, there was no misery, Garcia Marquez quipped. He owed 9 months of rent payments when he penned One Hundred Years of Solitude. To send the manuscript to his editor in Argen- tina, his wife pawned a household appliance. Known affectionately as Gabo, he founded the Iberian-American New Journalism Founda- tion in the Colombian port city of Cartagena. One Hundred Years of Solitude is 47 years old now, New York Times noted. And despite its colossal and enduring popularity, its style magic realism has largely given way, in Latin America, to other forms of narration, in part as a reaction against the sheer size of Garca Mrquezs achievement. (Soon) writers in Latin America cant use the word solitude any more, because they worry that people will think its a reference to Gabo. And soon, we may not be able to use the phrase 100 years either. No writer in the world has had a comparable impact in the last half-century. No writer since Charles Dickens was so widely read, and so deeply loved, as Gabriel Garca Mrquez. One Hundred Years of Solitude was trans- lated into 35 languages and sold more than 30 million copies. The Nobel committee rewarded him for books in which the fantastic and the realistic are combined in a richly composed world of imagination, refecting a continents life and conficts. In his Nobel speech, he said it was the out- sized reality of brutal dictatorships and civil wars in Latin America, and not just its literary expression, that got the attention of the Swed- ish Academy of Letters. That has been the focus of commentary. Here are excerpts from Gabriel Garcia Marquez on journalism, the other craft he excelled in. Some (70) years ago, there were no schools of journalism. One learned the trade in the newsroom, in the Friday-night hangouts. The newspaper was a factory where journalists were made. We were so passionate about our work that left little room for a personal life. The newspaper was then divided into departments: news, features and editorial. The most prestigious was the editorial department. A reporter was somewhere between an intern and a gopher. Time and the profession proved it functions the other way around. At the age of 19, I began a career as an editorial writer and slowly climbed the career ladder through hard work to the top position of cub reporter... Then came schools of journalism and the new technology. Graduates arrived with little knowledge of grammar and syntax, diffculty in understanding concepts of any complexity and a dangerous misunderstanding of the profession. The importance of a scoop at any price over- rode all ethical considerations. The profession did not evolve as quickly as its instruments of work. Involved in furious competition for modernization, newspapers left behind the training of its foot soldiers, the reporters. They abandoned the mechanisms of participation that strengthened the professional spirit. Newsrooms become septic laboratories for solitary travelers. There, it seems easier to communicate with extraterrestrial phenomena than with readers hearts. The dehumanization is galloping. Before the teletype and the telex (before Internet), a journalist with a vocation for mar- tyrdom would monitor the radio, capturing what seemed little more than extraterrestrial whistles. Hed piece the fragments together, adding background as if reconstructing the skeleton of a dinosaur from a single vertebra. A LORD was raided this week. I just kind of wondered what happened. When I was in Tambulilid to ask about the circumstances there, I was told the man is very private and seldom allows strangers into his house. Two weeks after he reportedly lies low, a search warrant is issued, presumably applied for an asset who would know the layout of his house. Hmmmm rrr Sr. Supt. Jose Macanas, Ormoc city police director, is relatively new. Unfortunately, two major crimes have already happened in his watch. The robbery of the Cebu Gold Pacifc Pawnshop and the deadly buy bust in Tambu- lilid. Nonetheless, I appreciate his openness to media. While the heist and the Tambulilid incident are police work, residents are missing the intervention of our civil leaders. During the fact-fnding on the Cebu Gold Pacifc Pawnshop incident, the old sentiments of pawnshop own- ers again surfaced. They reiterated the demand for police vis- ibility. Atty. Nolito Quilang, president of the Or- moc Chamber of Commerce, was more specifc. He suggests that the Peace and Order Council be convened and that a well-managed crime prevention plan be setup. He is also curious where the citys intelligence funds are going. According to councilor Vince Rama, on the frst time the Peace and Order Council was convened, a resolution was passed giving Mayor Edward Codilla access to some P 6-million intelligence funds. Despite the money, a pawnshop was robbed; a buy bust went awry, resulting in the needless death of three people; and now, a lord was raided but only in spirit. His physical body was obvi- ously elsewhere. Our only consolation is that, at least 21 sachets of shabu are off the streets. rrr The city council, or the LP majority for that matter, is getting concerned with the fact that the mayors anointed legal offcer has not yet withdrawn his application for confrmation from the SP. In the meantime, he sits as OIC city legal offcer. While it is within the territory of the SP to reject outright his confrmation because he could not yet muster the at least 5-year prac- tice requirement, they do not want to embarrass the mayor or Atty. Verallo himself, by doing so. Atty. Verallo has sent word to them that he would withdraw his appointment from the table, but it has been three weeks now, and it has not yet been done. rrr The Mayor is proposing to make the ground foor of the old city hall income generating after it has been repaired and rehabilitated through funds donated from Hawaii. The proposal to make it income generating saddens Vice Mayor Toto Locsin Jr. He said the project to restore the old city hall is his pet project and that he was the one who made kulit with the mayor to fast track it so that Ormoc would have a museum to showcase its history. The plan is to put a museum and the public library at the top foor. The vice mayor said that if he had his way, he would not want it to be income generating because there might be a need to expand the museum and the library in the future. 5 April 21-27, 2014 Sing it! How much is England worth?: An anecdote The Gospel on Sunday MAY 4, 2014 3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER IN THE DISTANT PAST, I was very con- versant in English, Tagalog (the root base of Filipino) and Spanish plus a little French (I took it as my foreign language of choice for my PhD). I do not have much diffculty learning a foreign language but I forget it just as fast due to non-use. I am not alone in this regard. Majority of Filipinos speak at least 2 distinct languages and theres a historical basis for it. For more than 400 years, we talk and understand our own regional language and also Spanish. Then the Americans taught us a third language English doing it so well that in the process we forgot Spanish. It seems that even as babies, our brains have been pre-conditioned to talk in different tongues. Thats why it is very natural for Filipinos (OFWs in particular) to readily pick up the language of the country they are assigned be it Arabic, Bahasa, German, Nipongo or Mandarin and in most cases be a natural speaker of the language. Europeans, in general, because of their culture and language are in the same fortunate situation as us. Notice how tennis great, Roger Federer, is as fuent in English, French and Ger- man as he is in Swedish. It can be argued that these are all romance languages but this is just the luck of the draw. Other nationalities are not so lucky. They have the most diffcult time learning a new language. Notice that Americans from Jimmy Connors to Pete Sampras always talk in English even in France or Italy during Tennis Opens. Americans even have diffculty understand- ing their own language if spoken in an accent different from theirs. The British also fall into this category. But Hungarian is a language regarded as very diffcult for speakers of other European languages to master. Thus, Hungarian was used by researchers in a recent study that found sing- ing in a foreign language can signifcantly help one to learn how to speak it. Adult native speakers of English took part in a study. After listening to short Hungarian phrases, one group sang them back, another repeated them rhythmically and the third spoke them normally. The singers learned twice as well as the nor- mal speakers, the researchers said. They were able to recall the phrases with greater accuracy in the long term, and they also outperformed the rhythmic speakers. The study provides the frst experimental evidence that a listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign-language learning. One question is whether melody could provide an extra rescue to jog peoples memory, helping them recall foreign words and phrases more easily. And it does not really matter if one does not have a good singing voice. I think that the secret lies in recalling the language in two levels phonetically and musically. This is proven by tenors and sopranos who could easily sing in many different languages as the roles require. Opera divas can sing in Span- ish, German, and Italian and probably in any language with ease. It seems that it is probably a gift to have a good ear for music and language. And even if you do not have both, one can just sing it out loud to learn a language or two. Just the same, another effective approach to learn a new language is to get a good diction- ary, move to the country where that language is spoken and to talk to the locals only. ENGLAND WAS at frst a Catholic country until the King was King Henry VIII. He used to be the childhood friend of (eventual Sir) Thomas More, a layman who eventually became Lord Chancellor of England who was next in authority with the King. Because More would not allow the King to marry another woman for the simple reason that he was a married man, the King ordered him arrested and eventually beheaded. It showed that sometimes the best of friends can become the worst of enemies. It was here that the Church of England was established by royal decree. By reason of this decree, all other religions were asked to leave and go somewhere. The anecdote follows: The childhood friends of the king became priests; as such, the public called attention to their presence. The king had to ask his friends to leave. As a form of consolation, they can choose to stay if they can pass a contest of knowledge. If they can answer all three questions correctly, they may be allowed to stay. If not, they may either leave or face the gallows depending on the panel that will face them in the contest. The priests chose their members that were knowl- edgeable. The King had his advisers and himself as the panel to ask the questions. Question No. 1: How far away is heaven? No part of the Bible can be found to answer this question. There is heaven and hell and pur- gatory but how far away is another matter. This question had to be answered because the contest called for them to answer all three questions. It showed that all three questions were formulated so that they cannot have an answer. They had to be smarter than the panel of the King. Answer: Heaven is fve days away. Christ resurrected on Easter Sunday. He continued to see his Disciples and other people for forty days up to His Ascension which was the time He went back to God the Father after assuring his people He will send the Holy Spirit to continue His work. We also know that the Holy Spirit appeared on Pentecost Sunday ffty days after Easter. Since Christ rose to Heaven on Ascension Day, Pentecost must have been ten days after Ascension. If Christ is the equal of the Holy Spirit, it must have been fve days up and fve days down. The panel had to agree because it is found in the Bible. Even if the answer was not a measure of distance, the number of days can be consid- ered as an answer. Correct! Question No. 2: The King asked how much is he worth? There is no way by which a king can be audited. There is no record of it. To answer this question, there must have to be a fnancial statement. There is none. The panel was sure this question cannot be answered. England has many possessions: Canada, Scotland, Maldives (Falkland Island), British Guiana, etc. No way for them to have an iota of any fgure. Answer: You are worth thirty one pieces of silver. What?! I am only worth 31 pcs of silver? I even own your life here in England. England was a world power. Think of Canada, Scotland, HongKong (at that time, it was still under lease by them) and other possessions. Explain your answer. If Jesus Christ was sold for thirty pieces of silver, certainly thirty one pieces make you richer than Christ who owns the whole world. The King was happy with this remark. Correct. Question No. 3: What am I thinking of now? Even any of the panel of advisers of the King cannot answer this question. The King can always change his mind. This was one question that they can no longer answer. They were doomed. Even the King was now angry because two questions were already considered correct. He even added that if they miss this question, they will forfeit their lives. The priests were stumped and afraid to be sent to the gallows. While pondering their possible answer, their Cook came forward and volunteered to answer the question. After all, he said, he will also forfeit his life. They had to give him the foor. The Cook asked to borrow a priests garb which he promptly wore before confronting the king. The king was dismayed and even fabbergasted because he knew none of them could answer the question. Answer: You think I am a priest but I am just their Cook. He proceeded to remove his garb to show his uniform as a Cook. When the king recognized him and asked him to approach, it meant he thought he was one of the priests. He therefore understood him to be a priest. He was therefore wrong to assume it. Luke 24: 13 - 35 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, What is this conversation which you are holding with each other as you walk? And they stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days? And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucifed him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since this happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning and did not fnd his body; and they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said; but him they did not see. And he said to them, O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not neces- sary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory? And begin- ning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He appeared to be going further, but they constrained him, say- ing, Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent. So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and he vanished out of their sight. They said to each other, Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scrip- tures? And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven gathered together and those who were with them, who said, The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon! Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread. Tuberculosis TUBERCULOSIS OR TB - is one of the most common respiratory illness in our country. Along with it is the stigma of pa- tients as society labels them as contagious. Yet, TB ranks 6th as the most common cause of mortality (death) among Filipinos. In fact, it is so common in Philippines that we rank 3rd in Asia when it comes to TB prevalence and 22nd in the world. Here are some frequently asked questions: 1. What is TB / tuberculosis? This illness is caused by the bacteria - My- cobacteria tuberculosis. It commonly affects the lung; yet it can affect other body parts such as the lymph node (TB lymphadenitis), brain (TB meningitis), bone (Potts Disease); among others. 2. What are the signs and symptoms of TB? TB should be ruled out in patients with cough persisting more than two weeks despite antibiotic intake. It is usually associated with loss of appetite, wieght loss, night sweats, low grade fever at night. It may also manifest as back pain, shortness of breath, easy fatigability and hemoptysis (coughing out of fresh blood). 3. How is TB transmitted? Through droplet nuclie. When a person infected with pulmonary TB coughs, sneezes or laughs, the bacteria is propelled out of the lungs in a form of droplets into the air; which can be inhaled by others in the surroundings and gets deposited in their lungs. 4. What are the tests in the diagnosis of TB? The frst two important tests are Chest X- ray; and Direct Sputum Smear Microscopy (DSSM) - done twice. These two tests are usually done if signs and symptoms of TB are promiment. The other tests that could be done are Gene Xpert (DNA-based)- for drug resistant TB; and TB culture. Other causes of cough >2 weeks are asthma, chronic obstruc- tive pulmonary disease, allergic rhinitis and gastroesophageal refux disease. 5. What is TB DOTS? It is Directly Observed Therapy Short- Course for pulmonary TB. It involves giving free medications to patients by the DOH per- sonnel at the local health centers. Aside from assigning treatment partners, they also provide lectures to patients about TB. This strategy has the highest treatment success rate compared to non-DOTS. However, patients must meet certain requirements to be enrolled in the local TB-DOTS program. There are 4 categories of TB treatment. Category I and III lasts for at least 6 months with oral medications only. Category II lasts for 8 months with combi- nation of injectable and oral medications. Category IV is given for 24 months composed of injectable plus second-line anti-TB medica- tions. It is intended for the treatment of Drug Resistant TB. Category IV is only offered at the TB-DOTS facility of the Schistosomiasis Hospital in Palo, Leyte. It is the only facility in the Region offerring screening for Drug Resistant TB. For the past years, the cases of Drug resistant TB has steadily risen. This is a growing concern in the Philippines as of today. 6. How can we prevent the spread of TB? The BCG vaccine has been given to all babies. It is for tuberculosis. Yet, many Fili- pinos still develop TB. Vaccines are given not to give 100% protection but it can decrease the severity of illness. TB can infect mostly the elderly, those with diabetes, chronic obstruc- tive pulmonary disease (COPD), smokers, kidney transplant, HIV or those with low SEE DR. They returned to Ormoc City about two months ago and did their work when the cli- mate allowed it. The Chinese contractor is giving a 5-year warranty on the rubberized oval but it will be voided if it is done under less than desirable conditions, which Rep. The subject Simban Limbona, said to be untouchable, also operated the mini-cockpit just near his house that was the scene of the death of three people in a buy bust gone bad last April 9. To recall, three people were killed including the citys chapter president of the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) that day when a buy bust held near the illegal cockpit became a bloodbath after the subject reportedly ran into the crowded arena and started shooting. The name of Limbona surfaced in a fact- fnding investigation done by the SP oversight committee on why there was an illegal cockpit in the barangay and to verify reports that illegal cockfghts have been going there for a time now. The barangay offcials all feigned they did not know about the cockfghts and the cockpit until one civilian took courage to stand up and told the oversight committee that it was impos- sible not to know about it because it was noisy, rowdy and oftentimes caused traffc. The barangay offcials led by chairman Max Jaballa then opened up and admitted they even wanted Simban to be the one to handle the cock- fghts related to the barangays festa on May. Police deputy city director Neil Montao also named Simban as in their watch list for drugs. During the fact-finding investigation, it was also mentioned that Limbona have not since been seen in the vicinity after the botched raid. Tingaleg mi lie low, said one of the councilors. Meanwhile, all ten cops including two of- fcials who were involved in the botched raid are now at the police regional camp in Palo, Leyte awaiting the result of the investigation being done by the Criminal Investigation and Detec- tion Group (CIDG), said city police director Sr. Supt. Everyone assumed, (they) were written by him, even if they werent. And always, they were written in labyrinthine prose, which, so history relates, were then unraveled by the publishers personal typesetter often hired for that express purpose. Today fact and opinion have become entangled: there is comment in news reports. Never before has the profession been more dangerous. Unwitting or deliberate mistakes and malign manipulations can turn a news item into a dangerous weapon. Bad journalists cherish their source as their own life especially if it is an offcial source endow it with a mythical quality, ultimately develop a dangerous complicity with it that leads them to reject the need for a second source. Only three elements are essential in our work: the notebook, foolproof ethics and a pair of ears. Ethical transgressions and other problems that degrade todays journalism are not always the result of immorality. They also stem from the lack of professional skill. Perhaps the misfor- tune of schools of journalism is that while they do teach some useful tricks of the trade, they teach little about the profession itself. Any training in schools of journalism must be based on fundamental principles: frst and foremost, there must be aptitude and talent. They must return to basic training on the job and to restore journalism to its original pub- lic service function; to reinvent those passionate daily 5pm informal coffee-break seminars of the old newspaper offce. It was in Baclaran church, his frst stop after arriving at the Manila airport, when I had the frst chance almost to touch him if not for the security who stopped me at the last split second. Then I was asked to go to Rome for eccle- siastical studies. I actually did not seek the priesthood. I simply was called to it, and I just said, yes, after a little refection. I still vividly remember every moment of that day of my ordination. What struck me most was that he started it very tired. He just came in from a trip and he already had serious health conditions. But as the event went on, I noticed he became very alive. At the end, he talked to me as if he knew me all along. I have no doubt he is truly a saint! Email: roycimagala@gmail.com immunity. Lastly, the spread of TB can be prevented by proper hygiene and sanitation. One has to frequently do hadwash- ing and by simply covering ones mouth when coughing and sneezing. TB is not transmitted by mere touching or sharing kitchen utensils. The bacteria should be inhaled in a form of droplet nuclie, deposited in the lungs and cause pulmonary infection, then TB disease. Late last year, I lost a patient due to MDR- TB (multi-drug resistant TB). She was only 16 years old. But it was her (baseline) health status which became the additional problem. She only weighed 23 kilograms upon iniitation of TB treatment - severely malnourished. She was so frail and eventually succomed to penumonia. One should not delay in seeking medical con- sult should they began to observe the signs and symptoms earlier discussed, especially if with exposure to known TB patients. ADVENTURE IS out there! Ellie of Walt Disneys Up The Philippines has tons of undiscovered paradise waiting to be discovered and enjoyed. Eastern Visayas is one of the regions in the Philippines that hides several uncharted beauties. The Province of Biliran keeps multiple veiled natu- ral wonders white sand beaches, clear blue seas, and stunning sceneries which all eco-adventurers surely would be dazzled. The province, once a sub-province of Leyte, is composed of enchanting islands that offer an expe- rience of tropical heaven. Among the islands exist the hidden Elysium of Biliran, the Higatangan Island. Higatangan Island is one of the must-visit destinations in the Province of Biliran. The island is known for its gor- geous white sand sprinkled with exotic shells, pristine waters, and exquisite rock formations; more so, a mov- ing sandbar that shifts into different curves every day the colors changing too, depending on the time and the weather of the day. The experience: It was a stormy Saturday when we departed for the ad- venture of our summer 2014. The day was hexed with LPA (Low Pressure Area). We were then hesitant but a month of planning and anticipation overpowered us with desire than cautionwe werent stopped. Despite the storm, we had gotten to the island in an hour and a half via a Van, then a pumpboat to cross the water. It was 7:30 am when had our touchdown. Apparently, the LPA had less infuence on the place as it was just rainy, and albeit gloomy, hadnt, in anyway, marred the beauty of the island. It was a coup de foudre, a bedazzling experience at frst glance of its beauty: the summer breeze caressed our skin, the smell of tropical pleasure in the air, the scene of clear, blue, calm water, and the landscape of green foliage, white sand, and high cliffs. We couldnt hold ourselves back from the temptations the island presented to us. We immediately changed our clothes for swimming, hopped excitedly to dip ourselves in the water. And I thought, this is vacation, this is an escapade, a break from all the stresses; and indeed I have it here. The beauty was so enchanting that I couldnt allow myself to let this experience be just a memory aftersoto im- mortalize the funwe took pictures. Then we made merry, then we feast, and partied, feast again, and partied again, so on and so forth until we had enough. This is fun, in a The author (top photo, in white) with friends.
