Waterjet Cutting
Cutting Process and Technology
1.2
Advantages over tradtional cutting methods:
Cut a variety of materials with just one tool
No direct contact between the cutting head
and the workpiece, resulting in minimum
lateral or vertical force
Virtually no induced tension or micro cracks
No heat distortion or heat-affected zones
Efcient use for material thicknesses of
up to 200mm
Dynamic Waterjet

Dynamic Waterjet with Active Tolerance Control, produces more accurate parts at signicantly
higher cutting speeds than parts cut with a conventional waterjet. This patent pending system
utilizes a newly developed advanced motion system that incorporates unique mathematical cutting
models.
System lag and taper are a natural, but undesirable, result of cutting with a beam-type cutter
such as a waterjet. The faster parts are cut, the greater the stream lag. Stream lag causes part
geometry errors. Applications that were previously too inaccurate, slow or expensive to cut using
conventional abrasive waterjet technology are now of interest for Dynamic Waterjet.
This revolutionary new technology opens up markets to current waterjet users, such as tool and
die industry, manufacturing of high-precision components of the aerospace industry, as well as
the production of high quality stone inlays, where in the past manufacturers might have selected
alternative processes such as laser, milling, wire EDM, punching, or routing.
Material and Applications
Ultrahigh-pressure waterjet and abrasivejet systems are used in a wide variety of industrial cutting
applications

Heat Treatment
We offer a range of processes; Annealing, Hardening, Normalising and Stress Relieving,
which involve heating and cooling to impart specic properties on the steel.
THE BENEFITS
Increases the hardness (process dependant)
Improves the machineability (process dependant)
Relieves internal stresses (process dependent)
Processes
Annealing Heating to, and holding a suitable temperature, followed by relatively
slow cooling. The purpose of annealing may be to remove stress,
to soften steel, to improve machinability, to improve cold working
properties or to obtain a desired structure
Hardening Increasing the hardness of steel. This normally implies heating the steel
to a required temperature and quenching in a suitable medium i.e oil or
water
Normalising A heat treatment process that has the object of relieving internal stresses,
rening the grain size and improving the mechanical properties.
The steel is hardened to 800-900C according to analysis, held at
temperature to allow a full soak and cooled in still air
Stress Relieving Heating to a suitable temperature (600-650C) followed by cooling at an
appropriate rate in order to reduce internal stresses without substantially
modifying the steels structure. This treatment may be used to relieve
stresses induced by machining, quenching or cold working

Ultrasonic
Flaw Detection
1.11
THE BENEFITS
Sensitive to both surface and sub-surface discontinuities
Any defective sections found in the plate can be dealt with before use in critical purposes
Highly accurate results
Principles
A typical arrangement for ultrasonic examination of plate involves a single probe, which sends a
pulse of ultrasonic energy (high-frequency sound, normally outside of the range that the human ear
can detect) from one side of the plate to the other, at which point the signal echoes and returns to
the probe. Measurements using this technique are based on the time taken for the ultrasonic pulse to
return to the probe. A lamination in the path of the ultrasonic pulse would cause the signal to return
sooner than expected.
Processes
Accurate location & sizing of laminations, stringers, inclusions
Where plates are to be used for critical purposes, limitations to the size and position of defects can
be imposed, depending on requirements. Defects can be sized and positioned in three dimensions
where necessary. Thus any defective sections of plate can be found and dealt with before critical
work commences, and can be sorted according to the quality of the plate.
Sentencing of components
Maximum defect size or thickness deviations can be specied for both the body and the edge of
plates under examination. This may be subject to either client specication or specied by national
standards as appropriate. British standards are available for your perusal on request.
Compliant to European Standard EN10160:1999
This European standard describes a method for the ultrasonic testing of uncoated at steel
product for internal discontinuities. It is applicable to at product in nominal thickness range of
6mm to 200mm of non-alloyed or alloyed steel, excluding austenitic or austenforretic steels.
This standard also denes four quality classes for the at product body (Classes S

)
& 5 classes (E

Gietart Inline Shotblaster
A six turbine shot blaster, Big Betsy represents a million pound investment and has
revolutionized the speed at which we can shotblast and prime steel, providing a better,
faster service.
In 15 - 20 minutes we can process a 15 metre beam that is fully shot blasted, painted and
dried.
This six turbine blasting machine accomplishes this as the steel is preheated to 45C to dry
off and remove any moisture, dry oxide and rust scale. The material is then blasted to a
SA 2 grade surface nish before entering the painting booth.
Four automated spray guns are used for paint spraying, sensors are used to eliminate
spraying from one or both anges of a beam as required.
The steel is nished with a primer coat of 25 microns (general tolerance of 10 microns) of dry
lm which acts as a transit primer and will resist rusting in an outside environment for up
to six months.
SHOTBLASTING
PREHEAT
Material heated to in excess of 45C to dry and

SPECIFICATIONS

Material is shotblasted to required standard
with S330 graded shot. (Hardness 48-51

OVERCOATING
Where a subsequent coat is to be applied
on top of a freshly applied coat of Derocryl
Shop primer Hydro, the surface should be
de-dusted. A freshly applied coat can be
recoated with water based paint after 1 hour.
If a solvent based paint is used an interval of 1
day is recommended for 1 pack systems and 2
days for 2 pack systems.
CLEANING
Dry paint should be removed using high
pressure water cleaning, chipping or
mechanical removal.
TOUCH UP PAINT
Touch up primer is available to purchase in
5 litre cans. Call our sales team for details
MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION
Drying times and recoatability are measured at
20C and 65% relative humidity. Using a dry
lm thickness of 28-30 microns. These gures
are to be used as a guide. Considerable
differences can be found due to variations in
coat thickness, temperature differences and
weather conditions.
The practical spreading rate depends on a
number of factors such as type of application,
weather conditions, shape and prole of the
surface.
Note: The information on this sheet is correct
as from 1st Jan 2005. We reserve the right to
change the primer used without notication.
The information is subject to change without
notice as technical and legislative changes
dictate.
Welding Certication
Transit Primer approved for use in electrical welding and gas cutting applications subject to the
following conditions:
(I) Material is subject to ame cutting under Open Shop conditions
(II) Electrical welded under the conditions of ventilation normally associated with good
welding practices, provided that the primer is applied to the plate at the
manufacturers recommended application rate, to give a dry lm thickness
(DFT) of 25 microns.
Approved By: GSI SLV Duisburg
Report No: 2001 660 0005/2

Geotextiles
For ground stabilisation.
Geotextiles provide an effective
solution to the age-old problem of
constructing stable granular layers
over soft foundation soils.
The fundamental problem, and the
solution using Geotextile is shown in
Figure 1.
When a granular layer is constructed
directly on a soft subgrade, external
loadings (e.g trafc) cause intermixing
of the granular material with the soft
subgrade.
This results in a loss of bearing strength
of the granular layer and premature
failure of the structure.

CAD Files
Two and three dimensional CAD les are by far the best format for supplying drawings.
Our extensive CAD software can interpret the following formats:
DWG, DXF, IGES, DSTV, NC and Solid Edge Native les
To ensure the best results the following format should be adopted when providing CAD les:
Internal and external contours to be cut, drawn on 1
st
layer or colour
Etched marking and etched text on a 2
nd
layer or colour
Additional processes such as tapping/milling etc drawn on a 3
rd
layer or colour
Non-processed data and information text on a 4
th
layer or colour
Drawings should where possible, be supplied as 1:1.
Drawings supplied as scaled should give clear indication as to the scaling on each drawing le
CAD les should not be supplied Not To Scale (NTS) e.g. drawn and dimensioned and the data
manually amended.
Faxed / Hard Copy Drawings
Faxed drawings should be provided with clear, concise, unambiguous dimensions in
either metric or imperial measurements.
Items which will repeat should be identied in order for us to create a
Customer Part Number (CPN)
CPNs should be discussed with our sales team when placing the order
Assembly drawings are to be avoided, if at all possible.
No templates or template tracings are to be provided, as this service is not offered.
Steel Construction Software
Users of X-steel, StruCAD Construction Modelling and Detailing software can now send in
their NC output les direct to us. This will include all drilling, mitre cutting, shot blasting
and your delivery requirements.
Using this format we will be able to provide prompt pricing resulting in shorter lead times thus
giving you the maximum time for construction.
Up to the minute revisions can be sent to us direct from your detailers where, as long as the
originals havent already gone into production, we can make immediate changes.
Mitre Cutting Codes
For your ease we have created a number of standard mitre cutting codes that can be referred
to when designing any plans. Refer to pages 62 - 65 for mitre cutting codes
Standard Shapes
We have a number of pre-drawn standard shapes that can be tailored to suit the
measurements you require, cutting out the need to send technical drawings (See Pages 66 - 72)
We have an experienced team of CAD programmers ready to convert your dimensioned drawings
into parts in preparation for loading onto our CNC machines for cutting.
Your originally supplied information will be held for 4 months, should you need them for additional
business. All parts created by the team are held indenitely and can be recalled, once identied
through our sales order records. For efciency, any parts that are to be repeated, should be stored
via our Customer Part Number (Contact our sales team to save any components as a CPN) system
enabling repeatability of components and reducing the lead time of your order.

Standard Shapes
To help save you valuable time, money and hassle we have created a set of the most commonly
used shapes. These can be used when placing an order, by phone, fax or email. All you will need
to do is ensure the minimum/maximum specications for the part fall within our machine cutting
capability, specify the dimensions for the corresponding shape and we will do the rest. By using
one of our standard shapes there is no need to supply a technical drawing of the part.
THE BENEFITS
Save time - No need to supply technical drawings
Lead times reduced - Dimensions can be entered directly into the system
Easier ordering - Just quote the generic standard shape and the dimensions and well do the rest
We can also add customised standard shapes if you have a shape you continually use
B
A
E
D
C
F
Standard shapes are split into six sections: Rectangles, Circles, Flanges and Rings, Gussets,
Brackets, Miscellaneous Parts, and Folded Parts
All dimensions are required in millimeters
Please ensure that all dimensional measurements do not exceed our maximum processing
capabilities (see laser, plasma and ame cutting sections for specic capabilites)
All dimensions required are clearly indicated on the diagrams. For more information or
assistance on how to use the standard shapes please do not hesitate to contact our sales team,
who will be more than happy to help.
