Activity 2 Hangman!
1 Draw a category grid on the board for the students to use as a model and mark each category clearly with the words given. You
or your students may want to change the categories if you think of better ones.
2 Make sure the students have enough Longman Active Study Dictionaries. Explain to them the rules of Hangman:
Student A chooses a word from his/her category that Student B has to guess letter by letter, then marks one dash for each
letter in that word, eg, for the word pineapple, there would be 9 dashes like this: - .
Student A asks Student B to guess any letter of the alphabet. If its in the word Student A is thinking of, they insert it in the
correct space of the word as many times as it occurs, eg, if the word is pineapple and Student B gave the letter e, Student A
would insert e twice, like this: _ _ _ e _ _ _ _ e. If the letter given is not in the word Student A draws the first part of the
Hangman (see numbered diagram on the worksheet). The game continues in this way with Student A writing down the
letters Student B has guessed for reference.
Student B wins by guessing the word before he/she is hung! If not, Student A is the winner. Students then swap roles.
If theres time, ask students to write down the words in their vocabulary notebooks.
